We arrived early for our lunch reservation at 1.15 pm and were very surprised to find that us 4 were the only people in the restaurant. In fact we were the only people in that area of the place including Reception. There were a handful of people sitting outside but the number of cars parked was about 20, but where the people? A real mystery. We ordered our meals and they appeared after a 45 minutes, we were not in a rush but as there were only 4 of us why did it take so long? The service was acceptable but normally the waiting staff pop in and out but not on this occasion on a regular basis. I had the chicken curry and it was okay but a small portion far to much sauce. My wife ordered the club "sandwich" in sourdough bread, see photo below. This consisted of 3 big slices of bread split in half. She was not sure if it was sourdough. It had two slices of grilled chicken on one half and several slices of very dry and very salty bacon on the other side. It was piled high with lettuce and sliced tomatoes and would have been enough for 4 people. It was impossible to eat it in any dignified way, even by taking out one slice of bread she could not cut it, this was really disappointing and having less crammed in would have been an improvement. After our meal we had a wander around the grounds and although they are magnificent we had to watch out for the Goose pooh, it was everywhere.

Hotel was great, food was lovely, upgrade to jnr suite was fab. Service was excellent. Location great. Negatives were noisy peole in room above but not the hotels fault just inconsiderate people. Service charge added at the bar for pouring you a drink which I thought wss bad. Sur charge on ordering a steak of £10 and never brought our coffee after our meal. Apart from that a great hotel.

We stayed at Stoke Place in February 2026 and genuinely couldn’t fault the experience. Our room was clean, comfortable, and exactly what you’d expect from a building of that age — full of character yet very well maintained. It was a fairly quiet weekend at the hotel, which made for a thoroughly relaxing stay. The shower was excellent — powerful and consistently warm. The only very minor issue was that the pipework made a little noise for a few seconds after turning the taps off, but it certainly didn’t detract from our stay. The bar had a great selection of drinks, and Sylvester was particularly friendly and helpful throughout — a real credit to the hotel. We ordered food late one evening and were impressed that the quality and presentation were still excellent. The meal was delicious, and nothing was too much trouble for the team. After booking, I came across a few negative reviews which made me slightly apprehensive — but there was absolutely no need. We had a really enjoyable stay in a lovely hotel with plenty of character and beautiful ground

I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately our recent stay at Stoke Place was very disappointing from start to finish — especially as it was Valentine’s Day and our first one as a married couple, which made the experience even more upsetting. On arrival we waited around 10 minutes at reception before anyone came to check us in, which immediately made the experience feel disorganised. Afternoon tea was very average, and despite clearly highlighting a nut allergy, a pistachio profiterole was still served. This was quite concerning and made us feel that dietary requirements were not taken seriously. Dinner unfortunately didn’t improve things. The food was again very average and I chose not to eat my main course. The waiter was kind enough to offer the main menu as an alternative, but by that point confidence in the kitchen was already gone. I had ordered a bottle of Nosecco but was given a single glass of flat Nosecco instead, only to be told 15 minutes later that they had run out completely. We then returned to our suite, which I had upgraded specifically for the bathtub, only to find that there was no hot water at all. Reception advised us to wait an hour while they “reset” the system, but by this point it was already late and the main reason for choosing that room was lost. I went down to speak with the manager, Harry, hoping for some support, but unfortunately found him rude and not particularly helpful. Although a 40% refund was eventually offered, the overall experience had already been so poor that I would have preferred a full refund and to leave that evening. It’s a shame because the property itself has potential, but based on this experience I would not recommend staying here.
