Reviews for Kimpton BEM Budapest

A fairytale-esque stay

First time in Budapest! Chose this hotel as a fan of the Kimpton brand and from the moment you enter via the elaborate stag gate, you are transported to an impeccably designed stay. Very friendly staff (shout out to the doorman and also Laszlo and team for being so great) and the room was gorgeous. Loved the smoked cheese at breakfast, too.

Beautiful Hotel by the Danube

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Exceptional Hotel in an amazing location. The rooms were modern and stylish and our Danube view room was beautiful. The breakfast was top notch and the one night we ate dinner in the hotel was fabulous. You can’t beat the location. Right opposite Bem Jozeph tram stop and walking distance from the Parliament buildings across The Margaret Bridge. The staff were friendly and helpful and recognised our IHG status on check-in. Special note must go to Miklos, perhaps the most helpful concierge I’ve ever met. Finally, the hotel bar was absolutely stunning. Well worth a visit for a drink, even if you’re not staying here. Would definitely come again!

my first 24 hours at kimpton bem Budapest , uary without the lux

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

I have spent a lifetime in hotels across continents, from venerable grand dames to discreet modern sanctuaries. One develops, over time, a certain calibration for what constitutes five star hospitality. Regrettably, this property falls notably short of its own aspirations. From the outset, the welcome lacked assurance. The receptionist kindly informed me it was her first week. We all begin somewhere, of course. However, she appeared entirely unsupervised, and the hesitant, uncertain responses did little to inspire confidence in what purports to be a luxury establishment. The inner facing rooms are profoundly dark. Not atmospherically moody, but genuinely gloomy. Some contain oddly proportioned sofas that appear to serve neither comfort nor design harmony. The lighting offers no subtlety whatsoever. It is either full illumination or total blackout, reminiscent of a budget chain rather than a refined property. No dimmer switches, no layered lighting. The spotlights grow uncomfortably hot after sustained use. In a hotel that speaks of sustainability, one might expect environmental consciousness to extend beyond strong lighting and an abundance of toilet paper. Curiously, for a hotel positioning itself as luxurious, there is no bidet, despite generous space allocated to less functional design elements. The third floor frequently carried the lingering aroma of cooked food, and it appeared to be treated as entirely normal. Within my room, there was also a persistent wood fire scent, occasionally detectable in the lobby. When I raised this, the supervising staff member seemed unaware of anything unusual, attempting to detect an odour that was rather evident. Communication proved equally inconsistent. Two emails sent over several days received no response. Only after involving IHG customer service did a reply arrive within twenty minutes. The contrast was telling. Breakfast was underwhelming. Tea service consisted of separate tea bags delivered for self assembly, with minimal labelling of jams, breads, or allergens. Descriptions such as “assorted jams” offer little reassurance to a discerning guest. A domestic kitchen appliance was used as a toaster. Vegan options were said to be available, yet no dedicated dishes were presented. The sole offering was avocado toast, which arrived adorned with traces of dairy cheese that had evidently been removed. It was described as freshly made. Housekeeping in the morning was regrettably loud and lacking discretion, diminishing the atmosphere one expects at this level. One particularly concerning incident involved the maintenance supervisor. When I requested selective lighting adjustments from the electrical board, he entered the room, conducted a phone conversation in my presence, and proceeded to vape. When I asked him to step outside, he gestured for me to wait. Security arrived several minutes later. Subsequently, the front desk supervisor questioned my understanding of Hungarian to determine whether the phone call had been personal. Later, I received a call stating that the conversation had been with a supplier and that no vaping had occurred. Upon mentioning that I had recorded the incident, the supervisor came to my room to discuss solutions. It was an uncomfortable exchange, and one felt the effort was directed more toward justification than guest reassurance. The smoking policy appears loosely enforced, even by staff. The door peephole is poorly maintained and effectively unusable. Television channels were non functional, and I was casually informed that the subscription had expired in January. The wardrobe space is impractical to the point of comedy. Hanging even a simple shirt becomes an exercise in spatial negotiation. The amenity list is ambitious, offering some thirty five “forgotten items.” I tested nine. After receiving five that were either unhygienic, unsealed, or misrepresented, I discontinued the experiment. A nail kit consisted merely of a file. Nail polish remover arrived as an almost empty supermarket bottle. Tweezers were used and unsterilised. Apparel tape was confused with unrelated items. A stain remover wipe became a tube of laundry liquid. One hesitates to imagine what might have been delivered had I requested lip balm. WhatsApp communication with staff was slow and noncommittal. Enquiries regarding vegan dining were answered in principle but without practical guidance or menu details that might encourage one to dine on property. The tone suggested compliance rather than genuine hospitality. To note the positives: soundproofing from outside is commendable. The gym is adequately sized and better than some online reviews suggest. The Bluetooth speaker in the room performs reasonably well. The aesthetic concept and name of the hotel are attractive. Yet ideas alone do not constitute luxury. Functionality, training, attention to detail, and above all integrity in service delivery are what elevate a property beyond four stars. As a frequent guest of IHG properties, this experience has led me to reconsider future stays. Competitors such as Accor and Hyatt appear to demonstrate a clearer understanding of contemporary guest expectations and the importance of responsive service. In its current state, this hotel presents itself as five star, but operates comfortably at four. I shall not be returning.

Most memorable experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

Our stay at Kimpton Bem Budapest totally exceeded our expectations. This is luxury personified but in the most relaxed and unassuming way. Every staff member from the Concierge to reception, the restaurant and bar staff were AMAZING. Everyone is so pleasant and helpful. The restaurant chefs have to be highly recommended for the most amazing food......dinner in the Agos restaurant is of Michelin star rating and is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys fine dining. We travelled to Budapest of our 20th wedding anniversary celebration. The Kimpton Bem made it the most memorable occasion. Thank you to each and very staff member. I cannot recommend this hotel enough!

Business trip in Budapest

Exceptional hotel – truly deserving of its five-star rating. The rooms were superb, very clean, and wonderfully quiet, ensuring a relaxing stay. The breakfast was excellent, and the service was impeccable throughout our visit. Everything was perfectly organized and delivered with remarkable attention to detail. The hotel is in a great location, especially convenient when arriving by car. It offers very good value for money and has a lovely, welcoming atmosphere. Ideal for both business trips and leisure stays, I wholeheartedly recommend it and look forward to returning again.
