Reviews for University Arms

Given the price it’s disappointing

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

The reception staff and f&b team were really great but…for over £500 per night, we stayed for two in room 903, I will be picky. This is a premium balcony room and while a lovely size the standards of maintenance and lack of attention to detail was disappointing. The corridors and room itself showed too many signs of wear with scratched paint work. Sound insulation was poor, we could too easily hear people in the corridor and when nearby bedroom doors were closed our headboard bounced off the wall! There was no room information pack, so we ended up Googling to find out breakfast times and the restaurant menu. On Google only the ‘set menu’ came up so we were pleased to find more choice when we arrived to dine. The small ‘grey on grey’ graphics on the TV made it impossible to see channels while lying in bed. In the bathroom the shower is good but fittings are cheap and plasticky, and there was an old, scratched and off centre loo seat, with water run marks down the walls throughout. We also came across hairs in the bath. The coffee and tea provision was disappointing - they skimp on supplies and only provide enough milk for two cups of coffee/tea. When the room was serviced between nights, the attendant had taken little care to leave the bed looking tidy (picture is of how we found the bed) and the glasses had not been washed. Breakfast at £20 per head was good, but a major personal gripe is that they don’t have warm plates, also the toaster was hopeless (does any hotel get this right?), and there were no veggie alternatives to meat; on our first day we arrived at 0945 (closes 1030) and the fried eggs had run out, we did not seem them replenished but there were plenty on day two. The coffee and pastries were good! All in all, the UA does not deliver to price - but the location is great and the staff made our stay very pleasant.

First class hotel in centre of Cambridge.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The University Arms is right in the centre of Cambridge and next to Parker's Piece, basically a vast lawn. The staff were very friendly and poite and we were given an ungrade (room facing Parker's Piece) and breakfast included which was delightful. The hotel is expensive but the upgrade made it feel less painful! Hotel spotless, shower room fabulous, air conditioning great, no traffic noise.

A very good hotel.

The hotel is great and in a good location. The restaurant bar and library were great and the Friday night Jazz at the bar was great. Also the staff were incredibly helpful. Efficient and polite. The only negative is that my rooms carpet had seen better days. I hope that gets fixed.

Birthday Treat made special

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We had a 2 night weekend break for a Birthday getaway treat. The hotel is ideally located in town for easy access to the town especially as some of our stay we had heavy rain. The hotel and staff are smartly presented, welcoming and helpful. We were initially allocated the wrong type of room for our booking type, however this was quickly resolved and we ended up in a very good room, good views, space and amenities. Making the stay even more special. We also one evening enjoyed a cocktail in the bar before going to the theatre and in the morning enjoyed a cooked breakfast in the restaurant. In both cases we experienced good service and were tasty.
