Westin Resort & Spa Cancun in Mexico enjoys a prime location, tucked between Laguna de Nichupté and the Caribbean Sea. The hotel is an architectural masterpiece showcasing stone and marble. With their spectacular water views, the guestrooms, suites and Royal Beach Club accommodations embrace the natural light and vibrant colors of the tropics. Gourmet dining ranges from Mexican to Italian, and the Sunset Bar delivers on its name, offering spectacular views of the setting sun. Along with direct access to a 1,600-foot beach, you can enjoy a Temazcal steam bath or over 100 different tequilas in the Lobby Bar.

I went to have breakfast before taking off on an excursion dressed in shorts and a bikini top. They checked us in for breakfast it was a 10 minute wait. Once our table was ready I was told I needed a shirt. I watched others walk in with a sports bra and skin tight shorts.

This review pertains to the resort, and also the bar/restaurant at the resort. The resort itself first: The portion of the resort that has been renovated into villas for the Marriott/Vistana program is very nice. The rooms are spacious, nicely decorated, have great furniture, and a galley or full kitchen (no oven/stove) depending on the size of room you get. We have stayed at Westin Lagunamar just up the hotel zone further, and these rooms are better I would say; perhaps just because they are newer. Unlike the Lagunamar not every room faces the ocean, so make sure you know what you are reserving. Rooms are excellent for families. I have stayed here previously in the non-villa (older) rooms, and wouldn't choose to stay again in one of those rooms. The pools are fine here, and there is quite a bit of seating. The pool bar closes a bit earlier than I would prefer, but this is more of a family location and not really meant for giant booze holidays. You cannot drink the water from the taps here which seems a bit archaic in modern Cancun. I believe for this same reason the toilet water always looks like someone has just peed and forgot to flush. Not the end of the world, but not what I expect at a Westin-branded property. The hotel is literally at the end of the bus route up & down the hotel zone, but is on the route. This makes it very convenient to take the bus ($1US each way) anywhere you want to go. Uber also will deliver groceries here which makes it very affordable to fill the kitchen with what your family may need. The property is going to be undergoing more change soon when Marriott takes this Westin out of their ownership pool and transforms it into another all-inclusive resort...just what Cancun doesn't need. And, the bar/restaurant (Arena Bar): The food is a highlight of this property. I would suggest that the food here is in general better than the Westin Lagunamar. The menu seems to be a bit more varied, and every item my family ordered was prepared properly, and tasted very good. In the kitchen Alfonso ("Penguinito"....very short guy) prepared the pasta meal I had one night perfectly. And, in the bar Humberto (and others) made sure I had the drinks I wanted and made some great recommendations. I'm sad to see this location become an all-inclusive in the coming year or two as the food, its preparation, and service currently really is one of the standouts at this Westin property. ¡Viva Mexico!

This Westin is being sold and will change to another franchise in Fall 2026, so the hotel has not been renovated and is not in perfect condition. Most of the staff are very nice and helpful. However, my experience with front desk staff member Ms. Gardenia was disappointing. I encountered her twice, and both times she was unfriendly, did not seem interested in helping, and never smiled. It felt like she did not care about guest service at all. Aside from this, the rest of the team made my stay pleasant.

I would strongly advise travelers to reconsider booking a stay at The Westin Cancun. My family and I stayed at this property from March 12–17 for what was meant to be a special girls’ trip celebrating my mother’s birthday. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived, the experience was deeply disappointing. The hotel had serious cleanliness issues, including dirty rooms, hallways with carpets that smelled strongly and unpleasantly, and—most alarming—cockroaches in our room (not water bugs, but actual cockroaches). The front desk staff were consistently rude and unhelpful, offering little assistance or accountability when concerns were raised. Despite these conditions, we tried to make the best of the trip. On the day of departure, we requested a late checkout and were even willing to pay for it, but the hotel refused. We were instructed to store our belongings with the bell desk instead. A bellman assisted us with our luggage and transported it to our airport shuttle later that afternoon. However, upon arriving home and unpacking, I discovered that my carry on bag had been clearly gone through. The purse inside my bag had been opened, and my jewelry bag was missing entirely. The value of the stolen jewelry exceeded $2,000, and many items were irreplaceable due to sentimental value. Both my sister and mother, who were traveling with me, also noticed their belongings had been disturbed. My mother’s jewelry bag had been opened with items partially removed, though thankfully nothing was missing. Because my bag was a carry on (while theirs were checked), I am confident this did not occur during air travel and instead happened at the resort. Between the lack of cleanliness, unprofessional staff, and a serious security breach, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. This was not the level of service, safety, or care one would expect from a Westin property. I will be formally escalating this issue, but I feel it is important to warn others: DO NOT STAY HERE AND DO NOT CHECK YOUR BAGS AT THE BELL DESK!!!!
