Charming Setting, But Nowhere Near a 5-Star Experience—Except the Price

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

We recently stayed at Zero George Street in Charleston for four nights to celebrate our 30th anniversary. As frequent travelers who usually stay at 5-star properties, we chose this boutique hotel based on its charm and reputation — but unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations. The property itself is beautiful — small, historic, and aesthetically pleasing. Our room was on the top floor, which involved quite a few stairs but offered a relatively quiet setting. (we specifically asked for the quietest room and top floor) That said, the sound insulation is very poor; we could hear everything from the foyers, he outside courtyard and street. The biggest disappointment was the lack of basic amenities and customer service. There’s no spa, no pool, no room service, and no proper bar available throughout the day. The gym is a joke, a tiny hole you don't want to be in. The so-called “concierge” was not knowledgeable or helpful, and the overall customer service was nonexistent — a glaring issue for a hotel that presents itself as luxury. Breakfast was especially disappointing. The setup was worse than what you'd find at a roadside motel. Tables weren’t set, nothing was replenished unless you specifically asked — and even then, you were likely to get an attitude in return. I never saw a breakfast offer ever anywhere with tea bags on offer and no hot water and every morning we had to wait for someone to bring a cup of hot water from the kitchen...... The staff didn’t wear uniforms, so it was hard to even tell who was working or who to ask for something like coffee. The entire experience felt amateurish and unprofessional. In fact, only one person during our entire stay — someone working between the bar and breakfast area — stood out as helpful and pleasant. Food itself is tasty and it provides a good start for your day. But it is very frustrating to deal with a help yourself extremely tiny buffet, where food is not replenished, there is no proper staff and the wait for anything is very long. The attached picture is what you get when you ask for the smoked salmon plate. In summary, Zero George does not meet the standards of a true 5-star hotel, especially in terms of service and amenities. While the property has charm, it’s simply not enough to justify the price or the luxury classification. We won’t be returning, and I would not recommend it to travelers who value a high level of service and comfort.

A couple of days in Charleston

Lovely Charleston style in a great location (despite being just off a busy road). Much better than the alternatives we hade considered on both these counts. Decor lovely, although ready for a bit of an update.

The perfect place to stay. Its just beautiful and the staff is just amazing. Every member works as a well oiled machine taking care of every customers request and even sharing suggestions on subjects you didnt even know about on your visit. I would never stay anywhere else when in Charleston!
