About the Hotel

With echoes of billiard balls, poker chips, and clinking glasses frozen within its walls, this 1890’s Venetian Gothic landmark in the Chicago Loop springs back to life as an incomparable historic downtown Chicago hotel—where the spirit of play reigns supreme. After all, this is the city where the can-and-will-do attitude of Ernie “Let’s Play Two!” Banks lives on, where the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, shook all night long at the Checkerboard Lounge, and Sir Duke tickled the ivories at The Blue Note. And this is the club whose historic members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller—a.k.a. the original Hollywood Tarzan—and watched their fellow member Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became football’s first pro. Today, Chicago Athletic Association is both a stunning hotel offering outstanding guest rooms and a historic monument to the big-shouldered, switch hitting spirit that defines our city with a downtown location in the Chicago Loop.

Great experience

As the kids say, “no notes.” We ate at three of the restaurants and toured the historic building too. Calling this place a hotel is a disservice, it really is a resort.

Home away from home

Perfecto location just in front of Millenium park. The drawing room and game room were my favorite and the view from the rooftop bar was breathtaking at every hour of the day and night. The ambience was so authentic Chicago feel and it took me back in time. My mother and I were able to use the Athletic Association as home base throughout the day and could pop in to eat or cool off between excursions. All the staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. I was offered more water on this trip than in my whole life combined! This was such a simple sign of hospitality and provided for such a genuine welcome feel. It felt like a home.

Hotel for history buffs

Great hotel for history buffs. Great location during the summertime. There is a hotel tour which I would highly recommendS Considered a luxury hotel. But because of the L shaped configuration of the building with the front of the hotel being in the middle of a street block, windows of rooms may be facing the backside or a side of an adjacent buildings. Rooms can be tiny. But great in-room coffee service (local brand - i think Passion coffee). Great mini bat selection. Front desk and housekeeping are very attentive and more than makes up for the limitations of the building. I am on the fence if I want to return - will do if I plan accordingly and be willing to pay the price for one of the much larger rooms with walk in shower. No more rooms with tubs for me.

Brought my mom here for our girls trip. Price is high, their mandatory 75.00 a night is high, there is no security so people just walk in and out and have access to all floors, even thought supposedly it’s just the main floors. Felt very uncomfortable on Saturday night. This was the loudest room I have ever stayed in and I lived on the 6th floor near Clark and lake with the red line right there. We had a sound machine and earplugs. The housekeeper was still in our room at 4:30 when we were trying to get ready for dinner. I asked for some assistance on Saturday about the noise and was told they are sold out so they can’t do anything.. at 8 in the morning! They could have moved us. Also promised Hyatt points and never got them. The food is expensive and not great in the drawing room. Drinks were fun up in Cindy’s. Don’t forget all bills have a 4% charge they try to make sure you don’t ask for it to be taken off by not coming back when you get your bill. Not a fan of having to share elevators with employees, most were rude and just made the experience uncomfortable.
