About the Hotel

With echoes of billiard balls, poker chips, and clinking glasses frozen within its walls, this 1890’s Venetian Gothic landmark in the Chicago Loop springs back to life as an incomparable historic downtown Chicago hotel—where the spirit of play reigns supreme. After all, this is the city where the can-and-will-do attitude of Ernie “Let’s Play Two!” Banks lives on, where the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, shook all night long at the Checkerboard Lounge, and Sir Duke tickled the ivories at The Blue Note. And this is the club whose historic members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller—a.k.a. the original Hollywood Tarzan—and watched their fellow member Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became football’s first pro. Today, Chicago Athletic Association is both a stunning hotel offering outstanding guest rooms and a historic monument to the big-shouldered, switch hitting spirit that defines our city with a downtown location in the Chicago Loop.

Location, location, location

Awesome hotel in a great location! Front desk and valet were very helpful, and they sent up a surprise tray of sweet treats for our anniversary! Only complaint is that they seem to book as many corporate events as possible in the shared spaces so we didn’t get to enjoy the drawing room and game room during our stay - even the reserved areas were overflowing into the common areas because there were so many corporate people at the events. Same with Cindy’s the rooftop restaurant - crowded with 2 different events (and service was bad)

Visit the property. Don’t stay overnight.

I would visit this property as it’s a historically iconic venue to experience in Chicago. For check out the food and beverage options across the site. It’s worth your time. But, do not spend the night! The rooms are considerably overpriced. They are very small, even for Chicago. The room is outdated and old. The views in most rooms are horrible. Simply point, there are a considerable amount of hotels in the area that are better for less. I attached a photo of my “view” of millennium park which was essentially a room that felt as if I was in prison.

A beautiful hotel and an enjoyable stay

Enjoyed the tour of the hotel. It made my stay more memorable. A historic exquisite architecture! Friendly and helpful front desk and bell desk service! My Hyatt status was recognized at checkin and offered a late checkout. Room was clean. Space was well utilized. The gym was opened conveniently for 24 hours with room key access. Highly recommend for someone who likes to stay in a boutique style hotel.

Upscale, clean, comfortable stay with friendly staff

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We went during the week with me and my 2 teenagers. The rooms are well appointed, very clean and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. The building is absolutely gorgeous, with plenty of common space to just hang out and relax. The only downside was the lack of access to some of the games tables in the games room as they were consistently reserved for parties (work parties). There was usually only one billiards table available for the rest of the hotel guests

Great Location, Historic Vibe

At great location, right next to Millennium Park and Chicago Bean, and several other attractions. Reception was great, they offered early check in and late check. Breakfast at the hotel lobby restaurant was fantastic. The hotel was helpful to figure out wifi connection at the room. Overall we enjoyed the stay at the hotel.
