About the Hotel

The legendary The Drake Hotel has been a symbol of Chicago luxury since opening in 1920 at the intersection of the Magnificent Mile and Lake Shore Drive. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel blends Gilded Age grandeur with modern comforts, welcoming guests through an iconic lobby adorned with crystal chandeliers, ornate detailing, and timeless architectural elegance. The 535-room property offers a range of accommodations, from classic guestrooms to specialty suites, many featuring views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. While the hotel embraces its historic character, guests enjoy contemporary amenities including a 24-hour fitness center, pet-friendly accommodations, in-room dining, and attentive service that reflects more than a century of hospitality.

Dining is one of The Drake's defining experiences. The famed Palm Court has hosted afternoon tea for nearly a century, welcoming notable guests including royalty and cultural icons, while Coq d'Or remains one of Chicago's most historic cocktail lounges. The hotel's prime Gold Coast location places guests steps from Oak Street Beach, luxury shopping along the Magnificent Mile, acclaimed restaurants, museums, and the lakefront trail.

Great place to stay!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Our experience was excellent! The room was great, the staff was kind and professional, and the location is bar none. From our room we didn't hear any noise besides some vehicles with very loud exhausts 1 or 2 times. Although the hotel lacks amenities of others in the area everything you could want is within walking distance.

Stunning views and great staff, but not worth the high price tag due to odor and oversight

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

We had a wonderful stay overall in terms of the gorgeous hotel, perfect location, and a truly helpful staff. If it fits your budget, I highly recommend booking a lake-view room—and definitely request a higher floor to minimize street noise from the city. However, for the high price we paid, we expected a much higher standard of quality. On our first day, we were left with an almost-empty soap bottle that was never refilled, meaning we completely ran out of shower soap by our last day. More importantly, the room had a distinct, musty, muddy smell due to the lake humidity. Having stayed at many waterfront properties, this was easily the worst-smelling room I’ve encountered at a 4-star hotel. Honestly, you'd likely get a better-smelling room at a Fairfield. I seriously doubt top management has stayed overnight in a regular guest room lately, because paying customers deserve far better than ridiculous prices that don't match the room quality.

Insect bites

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Had a problem in the middle of the night with itchiness on my face, chest and arms. Reported it the next day to the manager and changed rooms. Had to fill out an incident report and talk to security. Never heard anything from anyone until I checked out and the manager was extremely rude to me. I’ve never been treated that rude by a hotel manager in all my travels. I went to Urgent Care when I arrived home and was diagnosed with insect bites and dermatitis.

Terrific hotel!

I had a wonderful stay at The Drake Hotel. The location is absolutely perfect—convenient to everything while still feeling elegant and special. The staff could not have been more welcoming, friendly, and helpful, always going out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The hotel has a wonderful sense of history and charm, and the service made the experience even better. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return. Highly recommended!
