Deserves lower than one star

Does not deserve more than 1, and would give a 0 if I could. For the price, which is equivalent to a nice Chicago property, one would expect at least the most basic amenities, but no. The room is disappointing for many issues, perhaps few of which would matter on their own but together make it such an unpleasant stay. For instance, we knew that there was no room service but the room offers nothing to make coffee or tea (even a packet of instant powder would have been appreciated) and there is no option available in the hotel until 7am. We were told to use the voucher in the lobby restaurant but you are not permitted to take even a muffin to-go with the included breakfast voucher; and then you are required to pay for the "to-go" options! Every where you turn is just another way for them to make money. The room is not better. There is no bath mat, only a single outlet next to both of two beds, no safe (!!), and no full length mirror. There is only "refreshing" housekeeping once every three days unless you pay extra for more (so more $$ grab). So nothing is replenished, even towels. When we requested more toilet paper at 10am yesterday morning, none was provided by the time we returned at 3pm. When we made another request, it still took more than 30 minutes to get it so we had no choice but to use the public restrooms in the basement! The rooms have connecting doors that allow every sound to travel through, including a party last night in the room next to ours. When we asked them to quiet down, they proceeded to bang on our door endlessly, even after the front desk talked to them. The next night had someone banging on the door down the hall demanding to be let in, and it did not stop. All in all, our visit has been wholly unpleasant and, when we mentioned it to hotel management, not a thing was done about any of it. Not one thing. We currently are looking into switching hotels . . .

Badly Treated

Ambassor hotel Chicago I don’t usually write reviews but I felt I had to for this hotel. The ambassador is living on it past reputation and if a 4 star hotel I don’t know where that places a Premier Inn in the star category - a 6 at least. We had flown from Nashville to Chicago - we arrived at the Ambassador mid evening and went to check in. As we had booked this holiday of a life time through an agent who had booked room only we had eaten before we arrived at the hotel . Therefore, to our shock on our arrival on the evening of 17 March 2026 for our 2 night stay the first thing we were hit with was additional charges for what is called entry into a Private members club (Daily Guest Amenity Package) - this package consists of - Dinner credit - 1 per night ( $10 dollars) - Vouchers credit - 2 per night - Drinks voucher - 2 per night As I said earlier we had booked through an agent for Room only. The young lady on the front desk told us that this is a REGULAR problem when booking through a third party - and that it is not the fault of the Hotel - perhaps you would agree if as they say a REGULAR problem then clearly the HOTEL has a part to play in this problem on what they do and don’t disclose to third parties. The additional cost is $99.95 per night and if you challenge or say you are not paying you are told you won’t be staying at the Ambassador. We are both Coeliacs and therefore, very careful as to what and where we eat - we hadnt seen any reviews regarding the safety of eating at the Ambassador. And as I explained we had eaten before we had got there so would not be having an evening meal plus it would be too late for us to eat anyway. I explained this to the young lady but just received this is Hotel policy and she can’t /wont move on this. She also FORCED us to sign a document with regards the package and forced us to take a carrier bag with Amenity package stuff in - she wouldnt let us leave it ( although we did return it the following day but they we’re not keen to take it off us).At the time we said we would not be using any part of the Amenity package - in fact as you will note further down on the first night we didn’t get to sleep until after 5am once we had been moved to a new room and therefore, we didn’t get up until after midday - so any opportunity for breakfast had gone anyway even if we did want to eat in the Hotel - plus we don’t come to a city to be stuck in a hotel - we want to sample the joys of Chicago and visit places that we know have been recommended as Gluten Free. Plus neither of us drink . So drinks is a non starter. We asked to speak to the Manager straightaway but told he wasn’t in but would be there in the morning. We tried on 4 separate occasions over the period we were there and each occasion we were told they aren’t in today - even though the time before they said they would be in at a certain time !!!!! We have also sent 5 emails and still no response - what kind of Customer Service is that ??? As I said they FORCE you to sign a form agreeing to the additional charges- which I believe is illegal and informed by my bank that this is a police issue when trying to dispute the payment. For a so called 4 Star hotel would you think the following - a large crack in the hand basin - A dirty bathroom floor - A big chunk out of the container holding the glasses - And the piste resistance a room next to the elevator shaft that was so noisy that when the maintence man came up at 4.30am as we had complained - he said it was totally unacceptable and apologised - we were then given another room but hadn’t got a wink of sleep until moved - And to crown it all we had a email saying hope you had a pleasant first night sleep - what a complete joke. So Sadly no stars for this hotel and I would recommend as so many other people have find somewhere else to stay when in Chicago - still waiting for the Manager to contact us - but sadly no doubt he will respond to this review - in the same vain “NOT THE HOTELS FAULT” - for once stand up and live the Customer Service that America used to be the beacon of. So so sad - perhaps because we are pensioners and from England that they hope we would just go away if ignored - well that isn’t the case. I have written to the Mayor Of Chicago and the Illinois Attorney General Consumer Complaints Bureau Department. Hopefully they will at least reply but sadly to date neither have.

We love The Ambassador

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We found it convenient to stay in a hotel rather an Airbnb or furnished apartment while we searched for the right property to buy after returning to Chicago from the UK where we lived for four years. We found the perfect hotel at The Ambassador, Chicago-s most iconic boutique hotel located in the heart of the Gold Coast with a continuing history going back to 1926. Newly acquired by The Chicago Hotel Collection just over a year ago, the hotel management overseen by Mr. Michael Ward, this hotel is in a class by itself. Mr Ward was more than helpful and accommodating to us. Our accommodation was quiet, spacious and an excellent value. The hotel met all our needs: First of all, I must say the hotel is immaculate, spotless, and very well run with a dedicated staff from the front desk, to housekeeping to maintenance to the food and beverage service that offers a lavish breakfast buffet, and an intimate cocktail and drinks and dinner service in the evenings with an efficient and congenial staff on hand. A lavish spread for a full breakfast buffet, a lovely lounge with a welcoming fire in a grand fireplace anchors well placed lovely and comfortable furnishings. The Ambassador is a far cry from the usual corporate impersonal experience we would have received at a typical large chain hotel with no personality. Roof top ambiance indoor and out is available to all guests is a plus. To Mr. Ward, and all the staff, we say thank you for a wonderful experience.

Lack of basic safety and accountability

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My stay at the Gold Coast Ambassador in Chicago from April 17 to April 20 was unacceptable from start to finish. I paid $174 for parking and immediately encountered issues during a 100-year anniversary event, including a broken champagne glass left in a main walkway while guests were actively walking over it. Safety was not properly managed. My room’s AC later backed up and soaked my belongings. Communication throughout the stay was consistently poor. I was told I would be contacted for a room change, yet without any notice or consent staff entered my locked room, went through my personal belongings including my purse, and placed everything into trash bags before carrying them through the lobby. My purse contained sensitive items including my ID, cards, and Social Security card, and staff had opened and placed things inside it. I was moved multiple times into severely damaged rooms with broken furniture, stains, and ongoing maintenance issues including ac units being held up by rocks. One night, a heavily intoxicated female guest vomited and urinated on herself near the elevators. The situation was handled poorly, creating an unsafe and uncomfortable environment for guests. Promises of a comped stay and dinner were not honored, Communication was consistently lacking throughout the stay. Michael, head of the hotel collection, failed to take accountability and instead minimized the situation rather than addressing the severity of these failures. This reflects a serious breakdown in safety, privacy, communication, and professional responsibility.
