Immaculate Room, Chaotic Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

We stayed for a three-night weekend in early December. The hotel was lavishly decorated for Christmas, and well placed within walking distance of all the major sights. Our room (a junior suite) had been refurbished very recently, and was smart, plush and snug. Typically for a 19th century hotel, the rooms had a small footprint, and although we expected this, the separate sitting and bedrooms - more like a miniature full suite, with two balconies - actually felt quite luxurious.( The wardrobe however was extremely small and not really adequate for two people - a minus.) The bathroom was comparatively spacious, and again, very recently refurbished, but the fittings were basic, even Spartan. Just one freestanding washbasin, when there would have been room for a double, and no furnishings at all bar a tiny glass stand for tissues and a hairdryer. Never before have we stayed in a 5 star hotel where we had to keep our sponge bags on the floor! Breakfast was delightful on our first day - served in a smart, warmly lit restaurant overlooking the main street, with a plentiful buffet and hot dishes included. Sunday morning was, conversely, a disaster.Queues stretched out into the foyer - there was a severe shortage of tables for two or four, while several tables set for groups of six and eight were empty, and staffing was woefully inadequate. After 20 minutes we were shown to a tiny drinks table in the bar area, where we waited another 45 minutes for coffee (eventually having to ask four times). Staff were harried and bad tempered. On Monday morning, all was ease and comfort again and we were glad we had not followed our first plan and gone to the cafe over the road. However, one persistent issue really marred our stay - in essence, the hotel bar/cafe is open to the public and (possibly only during the festive season) attracts very long queues from afternoon through to the evening. These move slowly and are processed alongside the main entrance, policed by a strong security presence. Every time we returned to the hotel after an excursion, we were challenged by the hotel staff, as though we were trying to jump the queue or otherwise affect illegal entry. A brusque "Can I help you?" sometimes complete with a body blocking move, is absolutely no way to welcome residents to a smart hotel, especially when they stay for several days and should become vaguely recognisable over that period. Overall, this is a gorgeous, historic hotel with some luxurious elements, but crowded, poorly staffed and lacking the personal touch. Location is good.

Hotel D Angleterre blends Scandinavian simplicity with classic luxury, and the bright interiors and attentive service made the experience feel both elegant and comfortable.

Bad experience in D'Angleterre Copenhagen

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Very bad experience. First, our room was next to some construction work, meaning noise was excessive. No tea in the room as well. No King bed but rather 2 beds turned into one with a very bad quality top matress. Once complained on the noise, the room was changed to an even smaller one, same bed situation with both on top and below matresses being one of the worst ever tried. Overall great location but really old when it comes to rooms and proper amenities. Not the standards someone would expect from a Leading Hotel of the World.

Not worth the visit 👎

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 months ago

We stopped in yesterday as it was recommended as the place to go for a drink after a day’s shopping . They may have been having a bad day but staff from door to waiting staff seemed uninterested. The door staff were more like nightclub bouncers, no friendly chat to customers waiting in queue. We had to go looking for someone to take our order then again to pay the bill. They left card machine on table and walked away never to be seen again. It was around 700 krone for 2 x mulled wine and an alcohol free cocktail and this had 95% of glass filled with ice. We would have complained at time but couldn’t get anyone’s attention. The building itself is beautiful but won’t rush back.

D’Angleterre the Queen of Hotels in the Nordics

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 months ago

The Queen of hotels in the Nordics, from the moment you enter the entrance and until you are in your room, you feel royal. 1st time with my son and he has been to many places so far, but the Smile on his face and the feeling swing him excited about staying @ D’Angleterre says Everything. The Christmas Lighting ceremony and seeing thousands if people wait for it was impressive. We loved the morning breakfast with everything we love to eat when we travel, his first champagne in the morning and then a couple if hours in the spa. We will be back… soon!
