Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

A stunning, historic hotel in the heart of old Cusco. The chapel is gorgeous, art abounds throughout the property and the numerous courtyards provide open green space with perfectly manicured plants & flowers. Absolutely beautiful, total luxury. Exceptional staff and exceptional food.

One of 4 Belmond hotels visited on our 1-week tour of Peru and easily the most beautiful. Located in a former monastery and located right in the middle of a small square, it is a great spot from which to explore. There even is a gorgeous chapel with a glistening golden altar in a decommissioned church on site that is used for a variety of things. We stayed two nights in room 213 which had a small balcony, lower sloping ceiling and a reasonably sized bath with a small double vanity. There are two on site restaurants and a nice bar that also serves a select menu (burgers, chicken, etc). Like the other Belmond hotels the service from the staff was incredible-friendly and efficient. Our room and bed were comfortable although I didn’t like the combo tub shower with the half wall glass partition. I would have expected something a bit more up to date. My other nit was that the AC was insufficient (or perhaps metered) to cool the small room to US standards. We prefer a cooler room for sleeping. The breakfast buffet (included) was head-spinning in its variety of traditional and local foods. I especially like that they had posted one of the kitchen staff to help point out local foods that could be easily overlooked. A superb array and best of the 4 hotels we visited. Overall a wonderful spot, centrally located with a great breakfast. Very serene.

Hotel Monasterio in Cusco is truly world-class. Cusco is about 11,000 feet in altitude, but they offer oxygen supplement in rooms. Everything is superb. The manager invited us to a special cocktail party on one night, very gracious.

My daughter and I enjoyed our trip to Peru immensely. We stayed at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and found it to be superb. We had a magnificent suite, the staff was perfect and the chef sent us a wonderful surprise birthday cake to our room.

We visited Peru and the entire trip was spectacular. Orient-Express hotels provided exceptional service and world-class accommodations. We stayed at the Miraflores Park Hotel, Hotel Monasterio, and Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. All three hotels had beautiful rooms, outstanding restaurants, and a helpful friendly English-speaking staff. From now on, Orient-Express will be at the top of my list for worldwide travel.
