Voted the Best Hotel in South America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler, Belmond Hotel Monasterio deserves every accolade that comes its way. Built in the 16th century as a monastery on Inca foundations, this cloistered compound is located amid the historic splendor of Cusco, Peru. Most notably, the hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu. Much of the original architecture of Belmond Hotel Monasterio remains intact, paying homage to its original seminarian occupants. In keeping with its intended purpose, the rooms and suites feature a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with a gallery of religious art gracing the walls. Because of the high elevation, 11,000 feet above sea level, many of the rooms are equipped with an oxygen supplementation system for your added comfort.

The Belmond Monasterio Hotel is my new favorite hotel (and I have been lucky enough to stay at some wonderful hotels). My daughter and I just returned from a 4 day stay and we were so sad to leave. The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous but the level of personalized service is like nothing I've ever experienced. The whole time we joked that they must have confused us with someone famous because we felt like such absolute VIP's. From the pickup at the Cusco airport to Roger the concierge arranging everything from reservations to tours to massages, we have never been so taken care of. Every employee knew our name and greeted us everywhere we went. We were given special treats in our room every day from a bottle of champagne to nightly little desserts. Our day tour to Ollantaytmbo and Chinchera was fabulous and our tour guide Jhader was fantastic. We ate almost every meal at the hotel because the food was fabulous and the environment was so peaceful and relaxing we never wanted to leave. Cusco is one of my new favorite cities and Monasterio is my new favorite hotel. I can't wait to return.

We were fortunate to have a guided tour of Machu Pichu followed by a cocktail in the Belmond lodge in Machu Pichu followed by a luxury train trip on the Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Machu Pichu to Cusco. The crown of all of this was our stay at Monasterio, a truly luxury boutique hotel. Staff was friendly, welcoming and professional, and the hotel is a former monastery- unique in a “good way”. Room was spacious and the bed was enormous (I think 2 doubles pushed together but without a gap- truly luxe). Cusco is a charming town and the shops right outside Monasterio had the best quality items we saw on our journey through Perú. Unmissable!

We were on a tour with National Geographic going to Manchu Picchu. This luxury hotel was just PERFECT!! Hotel was a former monastery with all the amenities. Beautiful outdoor area which you can see from your room (depending on location). Service outstanding. We wanted a room with a garden view which they immediately accommodated us (first room did not have view). I cannot say enough...It was just a perfect Historic Hotel...

Absolutely Exceptional – A Truly Unforgettable Stay This hotel is to die for. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered from the beautifully appointed rooms to the outstanding service. A special shout-out to Maria at breakfast her warmth made every morning even more delightful. Speaking of breakfast, it’s beyond delicious, with an incredible variety that caters to every taste. The room even includes oxygen support, which is a thoughtful touch for dealing with the altitude. Set in a former monastery, the property is rich in history and atmosphere, and the courtyard is hands down the most stunning I’ve ever seen. The entire experience feels uniquely special peaceful, elegant, and luxurious. I would come back in a heartbeat. Honestly, I’m now worried that every hotel after this will feel like a step down.

This is the premier hotel in Cusco and did not disappoint. Set an a stunning old monastery, the hotel provides luxury accommodations within the walls of a historic building. The meals were fantastic, and the service was impeccable.

Hotel Monasterio in Cusco is truly world-class. Cusco is about 11,000 feet in altitude, but they offer oxygen supplement in rooms. Everything is superb. The manager invited us to a special cocktail party on one night, very gracious.

My daughter and I enjoyed our trip to Peru immensely. We stayed at the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco and found it to be superb. We had a magnificent suite, the staff was perfect and the chef sent us a wonderful surprise birthday cake to our room.

We visited Peru and the entire trip was spectacular. Orient-Express hotels provided exceptional service and world-class accommodations. We stayed at the Miraflores Park Hotel, Hotel Monasterio, and Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. All three hotels had beautiful rooms, outstanding restaurants, and a helpful friendly English-speaking staff. From now on, Orient-Express will be at the top of my list for worldwide travel.
