In a desert land, where the colors are polarized between the pristine white of the sand, the shocking turquoise of the sea and the rich azure of the cloudless sky, is the Djibouti Palace Kempinski. The first five star resort in the Horn of Africa, Djibouti Palace located in the Republic of Djibouti, on the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. A sumptuous fusion of African and Arabic architectural themes, Djibouti Palace(TM)s 177 rooms and suites blend the luxurious with the exotic for complete comfort. With breathtaking scenery, above and below the ocean(TM)s surface, the wonders of this small African nation, and the gracious elegance of this first class resort, make this a once in a lifetime journey.

This is the best hotel in Djibouti, but there inevitably isn't much competition for that title. Given that it's not hugely expensive, if it's within budget you should pick it because it's a pleasant place to be. But what might you want to know: - it's huge. The distance between rooms and receptions can be very long. - the maintenance is not great, but it's fine. You shouldn't be expecting glossy luxe, and you won't get it. For example, the pools are nice, but they aren't well swept and the bird poop isn't hosed off very meticulously. Changing rooms for the spa are particularly delapidated - gym is good (which may reflect the fact that most of the guests are military!) - the clientele is very military (fatigues dominate the breakfast room). It's an ex-pat compound. - the rooms are really good. Comfortable bed, large space in base room and interesting layout/design. However, coffee is Nescafe - the seafood restaurant was a great setting and good food. Western prices, but also the set-up reflected that premium compared to what I saw in the restaurants in town. - breakfast is very standard for a hotel like this, but important to realistic that everything in the country needs to be imported so for any special products the hotel might be the only customer. - many of the flights from Djibouti leave in the evening. They happily kept my bag and I was able to use the hotel facilities until departure. There are lots of lounge areas to hang out in (and changing rooms to shower) when you no longer need your bed. I liked it. No substantial faults.
