Built in the 1950s by Laurance Rockefeller, Hyatt Hacienda Del Mar started life as an exclusive getaway for presidents and Hollywood's elite. Situated on a secluded crescent of beach on Puerto Rico's northern coast, just 22 miles west of historic San Juan, its cachet is enhanced with the magnificent Spa del Sol and 4 golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The beautiful, airy accommodations include elegant casitas and offer ocean views from private balconies or patios. Spectacular dining ranges from the oceanfront Su Casa hacienda to the Zen Garden, serving fusion Chinese-Japanese.

I'd like to say first off I am a former Hyatt employee and a Hyatt CC holder with rewards. That being said this property was not your typical Hyatt. This is NOT a Hyatt resort. There are none of the typical Hyatt experiences available here. There are no restaurants on property except the pool beach cabana bar hut, no breakfast bar, no lobby bars or entertainment at all. The staff is no where near as attentive as a typical Hyatt resort staff. They just seemed uninterested. The property itself is very nice and well kept. There was some construction going on while we were there but it was not too noisy. Lovely beach with nice reef offshore. Nice snorkeling area too. We had a end corner room, very nice balcony and nice view. If you plan on staying here you must rent a car. It is in the middle of no where. There is nothing nearby to walk to like shops or restaurants, the road is frankly to dangerous to walk on to begin with.

We just got back today from our February vacation with our 5- and 8-year-old. We were a little worried since we’ve never stayed in this part of Puerto Rico before, but the resort was really nice and clean. It wasn’t too big or too small — it was the perfect size. It seemed like many guests rented cars and went out during the day, so the pool and beach area never felt packed, which we really appreciated. The front desk staff was amazing. Anytime we had an issue, they sent someone up within 5–10 minutes. They were fast and very responsive. The beach was beautiful, but the water can be rough for toddlers or younger kids who want to swim. Some days were rougher than others. But my daugther still enjoy playing close to the water but not in the water Our only complaint is the mosquitoes after 6 PM. If you stay outside in the evening, you will definitely get bitten. We got so many bite marks just sitting on the balcony. I do wish the property would spray more often because it makes it hard to enjoy being outside at night if you’re constantly getting attacked by bugs. Overall, we had a great stay and would consider coming back.

I find many of the negative reviews here almost comical. Guests should understand where they’re going and what they’re booking. This is a Hyatt Vacation Club resort, not a full-service Park Hyatt. The accommodations are designed for longer stays, which is why you have a full kitchen—many people come here specifically to cook for themselves. Limited housekeeping (every other day or less) is very typical for this type of property. Garbage and ice are conveniently located at the end of each hallway, and anytime we needed something, a quick call resulted in it being delivered promptly. Service was efficient and friendly throughout our stay. My wife and I stayed here for a week and had a great time. Yes, you’ll want to rent a car if you plan to explore or grocery shop, but that’s part of the experience. We cooked most of our meals, relaxed on the balcony, and really enjoyed the view. There’s an open-air restaurant and bar on site that was excellent—solid food and drinks at very reasonable prices, especially considering it’s the only on-property dining option aside from cooking yourself. The resort is extremely clean, cozy, and well maintained, with a great pool and beach. The overall vibe is quiet and relaxed, and every staff member we interacted with was excellent. We had no issues—largely because we weren’t looking for them. We enjoyed our stay so much that we’re already heading back in April.

This would have been a 4 or 5 star review for the resort itself, but the management here is awful. We were mistreated or ignored on several occasions with what we thought were really simple requests. We also heard the roaming managers badger the staff a couple of times. I don't understand how this continues after seeing a few previous reviews saying the same thing. You work in hospitality management...be NICE! Also, we know there was nothing they could do about it, but the construction noise was way too early in the day. They start before the 7:30 time they say, and they need to enforce that better.

The beach is beautiful, but unfortunately the management is very inexperienced and does not treat guests well. This is especially disappointing because many of the other employees provide much better service. I would not return solely due to the managers, who constantly roam the resort and treat both staff and guests poorly.
