Built in the 18th century by the Saxon king, August the Strong [as a pledge of love to his mistress], and faithfully restored in 1995, Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden is a beautiful combination of historic glory and contemporary elegance.

What a treat it was to stay for two nights in this opulent and stylish hotel, where we were very well looked after. So tastefully restored, we enjoyed the luxury of a spacious and well furnished room. The restaurant offered very well presented and carefully cooked food (I especially enjoyed the green gazpacho soup) Service was impeccable. Special mention to the concierge who booked us in at Brasserie Bateau for our second evening and the whole front of house staff who made us feel so welcome.

Tucked within the heart of Dresden’s historic center, Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski stands as a breathtaking testament to baroque grandeur reimagined for the modern traveler. Just a stone’s throw from the Zwinger, Semperoper, and the Elbe River, the hotel’s location is as enviable as its architecture. Following a meticulous € 40 million renovation completed in early 2024 under the direction of architect Peter Kulk, the palace has been transformed with sleek, contemporary interiors, thoughtful sustainability upgrades, and a dramatic new lobby that echoes the fluidity of the Elbe itself. Since 1995, the German-founded Kempinski brand has infused the property with its signature blend of European elegance and gracious hospitality. My stay in one of the 60 m² Deluxe Suites was nothing short of exceptional. The suite offered a seamless blend of historic charm and modern comfort, with a spacious living area furnished with multiple seating options, a writing desk, and an oversized flat-screen TV. A separate sleeping area featured a king-size bed, additional seating, and a second TV—ideal for unwinding after a day exploring the city. High ceilings and polished wooden floors lent the space a regal air, while refined furnishings, fresh flower arrangements, and hand-selected décor created a sense of calm sophistication. The bathroom was equally indulgent, with a freestanding bathtub, walk-in rain shower, Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries, and a towel warmer. A separate toilet accessible from both the entrance and main bathroom added a thoughtful touch. My suite overlooked a quiet side street, offering a welcome retreat from the lively festival unfolding just outside. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a chilled bottle of champagne, artisanal pralines, a delicate miniature cake, and a beautifully arranged fruit basket - replenished daily, just like the complimentary minibar. Each morning began in the hotel’s Breakfast Restaurant, a refined space with the option to dine al fresco in the tranquil courtyard. The buffet was generous and beautifully presented: fresh juices and smoothies, an array of breads and pastries, jams and honey, cold cuts, cheeses, smoked salmon, salads, yogurt, and hot dishes. À la carte options such as Eggs Benedict and pancakes added a personal touch. While the food was excellent, service during breakfast occasionally felt stretched and less attentive than expected. Beyond breakfast, the hotel’s culinary landscape is impressively diverse. The Palais Restaurant offers seasonal regional cuisine in a setting that marries baroque splendor with modern design. Amalie Pâtisserie & Lounge is a serene haven inspired by Amalie von Sachsen, serving exquisite patisserie alongside premium teas and coffees. Kastenmeiers Restaurant is a standout for seafood lovers, while Bar 1705 delivers stylish cocktails in a chic atmosphere. During the colder months, the courtyard transforms into the cozy Almhütte - a rustic Alpine chalet serving hearty specialties. For wellness and relaxation, the attic-level spa is a sanctuary. The heated indoor pool, kept at a soothing 28°C, is surrounded by elegant loungers and baroque-inspired details. Finnish saunas, a steam bath, an infrared cabin, and a curated selection of treatments complete the experience, with herbal teas and infused water available throughout. The gym is sleek and well-equipped, offering everything from cardio machines and rowing equipment to free weights and stretching mats. Over the years, Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden has welcomed royalty, celebrities, and dignitaries - including King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and Robbie Williams. This was my second visit, and while my first stay had already left a lasting impression, the refreshed design and renewed energy of the hotel truly captivated me. Despite a few service hiccups, the overall experience was exceptional. In my view, this remains Dresden’s finest address - a place where history, hospitality, and modern luxury converge in perfect harmony.

Without a doubt, this hotel is the nicest place my husband and I have ever stayed. Dresden is a magnificent city and it was an added bonus to stay in a former palace that has been meticulously renovated. Not only is it ideally located steps away from the Royal Palace, the Zwinger, shops, and great restaurants, it is full of friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had a Palais Room and were immediately blown away by the high ceilings, beautiful hardwood parquet flooring, tasteful decor, and insanely large walk-in shower and double vanity room. The bed with top-notch linens and comfy pillows made for a restful sleep after exploring the stunning city and its fantastic collection of history and art museums. There was a loveseat and a chair so we had plenty of room to relax with a cup of tea and a good book in the evening. The room had all the amenities you could need and then some, including ample storage, a kettle for tea, coffee maker, bathrobes, plenty of ports for charging phones. Don't miss delicious Amalie patisserie. The cakes are phenomenal. Staying at the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden was the highlight of our vacation and definitely a 5 stars experience. If you are headed to Dresden, stay here. You will not be disappointed.

This hotel is the textbook definition of what a five-star experience should be. It doesn’t just check the boxes, it rewrites the exam. The building itself is stunning, a former 18th-century palace that was heavily damaged in the 1945 bombing of Dresden and perfectly restored. The latest renovation, completed in 2023, is nothing short of magnificent, an architectural gem for both history and modern luxury. The staff? A flawless combination of German efficiency and genuine attentiveness. No hollow smiles, no fussing, just calm, competent people who actually do things. Refreshing, isn’t it? I traveled with my family and we booked two rooms: a Palais Room for my wife and me, and a Grand Palais Room (larger, as the name suggests) for the kids. Both rooms featured separate showers and bathtubs, gorgeous hardwood parquet flooring, and top-tier linens, towels, and toiletries. Not a chipped tile or sad pillow in sight. Pro tip: don’t miss the bar downstairs. The cakes are borderline criminal in their deliciousness. I still think about them…. I’d love to offer constructive criticism, I really would, but the truth is, I can’t think of a single thing I’d change. It’s that good. Well… one thing. Leaving is hard. Brutally hard. You’ve been warned.

My second stay. The hotel is truly beautiful - new rooms with contemporary luxury design. Everything is perfect. Please, the breakfast restaurant also needs to be renovated - it looks terrible, 90s design. It greatly reduces the overall impression of the hotel.
