Concerns about Service Standards

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

Dear General Manager, My daughter and I recently stayed at The Merrion Hotel in Dublin. There were several aspects of the stay that we truly appreciated, but a few details prevented it from feeling like the full five-star experience we had hoped for. What we genuinely appreciated: The bed, pillows, and duvet were extremely comfortable, and we both slept very well. The wellness centre team and the staff in the breakfast restaurant were warm and pleasant to interact with. We would also like to acknowledge the gentleman at reception who showed us to our room — he was kind, welcoming, and made a wonderful first impression. The breakfast offered some nice options, though it did not feel especially luxurious for a five-star hotel. I should also mention that I have often dined at Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud with my husband, and in the past we have sometimes chosen The Merrion for overnight stays because of the convenience after dinner there. However, this was my first time staying at the hotel with my daughter, and based on this visit, we are rethinking whether we will continue that tradition. What could have been better: • Our room faced a side street with bins, which unfortunately took away from the atmosphere — especially as I noted during booking that this stay was part of my birthday week. It was not the exact date, but it was still a special occasion for us, and we had hoped the room choice might reflect that a little more. • During check-in (just before 2 p.m. on the 16th of November), the way the blonde receptionist asked for the exact date of my birthday felt more like we were being quizzed than warmly acknowledged. This may not have been intentional, but it left us slightly uncomfortable and did not reflect the level of hospitality we associate with a five-star hotel. To be clear, another receptionist we met was absolutely lovely, so this felt like a single interaction rather than a reflection of the entire team. • One of the chairs in the room had a small metal pin protruding from underneath the seat. My daughter discovered it when it pricked her finger as she moved the chair. Thankfully, the injury was not serious. We reported it upon checkout, and management responded with courtesy and professionalism, confirming that the chair had already been removed from service, which we appreciate.

Room was beautiful but small. Breakfast was very poor. Tasteless and cold. Cold buffet selection was excellent. Fruits etc.....Location was perfect.

Wonderful, discreet, unique city hotel for pleasure or business.

Always a pleasure to stay in The Merrion. Staff are wonderful, food and beverage always excellent and outside space a tranquil haven in the city. Interiors are warm and welcoming with stunning artwork everywhere. Classy and elegant. One of my favourite city hotels to stay in.

Wonderful Staff

Everything everyone has said about how wonderful this hotel is true. I will be forever thankful to the staff at the Merrion following a nasty bit of shellfish poisoning. To be very clear, the shellfish in question was from an outside restaurant in D6. The staff was super accommodating to allow me to extend my stay even though my room was not available for Saturday night. The team called to check-in on me in the morning and in the early evening, and they even sent a porter to pick-up a handful of supplies from the pharmacy for me. While this was a super miserable way to spend time at an amazing hotel, in one of my favorite cities, I am thankful it was at the Merrion. I will certainly be back.

5 Star Dublin

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

Arrived on November 4th from the US. Were met on the steps by Robert who immediately greeted us and attended to our luggage. Into check in-reception which was timely and professional. Up to our room on the 3rd floor that was clean, very spacious and very well appointed. We stayed for two nights before renting a car and proceeding on a road trip to the west coast. Arrived back on the 13th for one last night before heading back to the States. The location is superb, the Merrion Square neighborhood is beautiful and within walking distance of many of Dublin's high points. I cannot say enough about the staff. Every single person we encountered, bellmen, front desk staff, concierge, restaurant, house keeping, every single person was a joy, very attentive and professional. The in house restaurant has a delicious breakfast which we enjoyed every morning, next door is a 2 Star Michelin which we did not try as we preferred to his local pubs and other establishments. As for accommodations, large and clean rooms, beds VERY comfortable (according to our standards) Again I would wholeheartedly recomend his property if you want a top tier 5 Star experience.
