Reviews for 21c Museum Hotel Durham

I always stay here in Durham

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

As Durham is on a commute route for us to visit family, we have stayed at this hotel many times during and post-pandemic. I reviewed the hotel several years ago and I thought I should again. The hotel is first-rate. The service – from the desk clerks to the valets to the cleaning staff – is impeccable. The perfect location: walking distance to CPAC and a myriad of great downtown restaurants. I love hearing the faint train whistle from the nearby train station – so atmospheric. Stay in a room on a higher floor for the best views. We did not eat at the restaurant this time, but the bar has an excellent selection of bourbons with knowledgeable bartenders that know how to make great cocktails. (Note: Go to the bathrooms on the second floor above the restaurant; the bathrooms *are* the art.) To reward my (high-level) Accor loyalty program status, I was given an upgrade to a suite and a wonderful welcome gift. The bed is comfy, and the room has plenty of closet space. Bathroom toiletries are no longer in the tiny bottles; they are in large bottles affixed to the shower or sink wall (which prevents the problem of little bottles falling in the shower or running out). My big complaint is that the lighting in the bathroom is too dim (Yes, I have had staff look at the lighting in the past, but it’s always this way). This is a pet peeve of mine because It’s not just this hotel. This dim mood lighting in bathrooms seems to have become a trend in high-end hotel chains – and it needs to stop!!! If the lighting does not allow someone to check their shaving or put on makeup properly, then that’s a problem. I guess the only way I’m going to get hotels to notice this is to automatically drop one star on my ratings. So 21C, you should lobby Accor to get you some brighter bulbs. One other comment. I do not know whether the air con is on a motion sensor, but the room seems to get too warm at night while sleeping. Maybe it’s just us. I would give this hotel a perfect score, but for the bathroom lighting. We love this hotel and will stay here every time we are in Durham.

I went to a third party and they Had problems trying to give me my room So they just gave me my keys and let me go to my room. But in the morning I was charged three times the price of the room but The problem. Wasn't with the hotel? It was with the third party that I book with.

Tired and not clean

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This place has a friendly staff, but the good ends there. The hallways look institutional, the rooms are not clean feeling or looking. Perhaps this is a transitional stage but they have to hurry up with the updates. MARRIOT is across the street.

Cool Experience in Downtown Durham

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

I thought this was a very unique property with an artistic design aesthetic in a great downtown Durham location. And I especially thought the staff was friendly, and the reservations team were very helpful in resolving a mistake I made. I recommend!

Great place in the best location!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Great experience overall, plus a great location to stay within the city. Everything we wanted to do was within walking distance. Valet parking for a reasonable price was a nice plus. Lastly, Chantelle at the check in desk was so kind & helpful as well!
