About the Hotel

Overlooking one of Edinburgh's prettiest private garden squares, Kimpton Charlotte Square consists of seven interconnecting Georgian townhouses in the heart of the New Town. Our beautifully formed bedrooms and suites are inspired by the golden age of travel and a genuine sense of Scottish hospitality. Sitting proudly in the middle of the hotel is The Garden bar and restaurant, an oasis of calm in the centre of the city. Light and bright during the day for breakfast and lunch, transforming in to a fairy lit hideaway in the evening for cocktails and dinner. Sample our Twilight Tea, a unique take on the classic afternoon tea with a focus on savoury flavours from 12pm to 10pm every day. BABA restaurant is a sumptuous, relaxed journey to the Levant, featuring mezze, charcoal dishes and small plates with bold Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours perfect for sharing. Cocktails take on the adventurous flavours to continue the journey until late in the BABA bar.

It was a perfect stay!

This was our first trip to UK/Europe, so we really didn’t know what to expect on this 2 week vacation. The staff greeted us as we stepped from our taxi, and moved in with a friendly hello. We especially enjoyed Cammy and Michael the Concierge. We got to know them well, as they greeted us everytime we were in the lobby. Check in was perfect, even though our plans had changed, and we needed to book more days right away. We absolutely loved the warm ambiance and atmosphere of this beautiful hotel. When we stepped inside the beautiful Georgian style building, the eclectic decor added to the unique feel of the place. We came from Los Angeles with a stop in Amsterdam. The journey took 12 hours and we were traveling with our son, his wife and their 6 week old baby. We came all this way for a family wedding at Carlowrie Castle! We were taken to our rooms, which were very clean, comfortable and welcoming. Being from the USA, we were not ready for complimentary snacks and water! All the amenities were perfect and appreciated. We stayed for 2 weeks at the Kimpton and it just felt like home to us. We occasionally received little gifts, such as a bottle of wine and little deserts. We purchased the breakfast option, so we loved meandering down to the dining area, saying good morning to the staff in the lobby. Cammy always had a smile on his face and a kind word. Breakfast was interesting and fun, as we got to know Scottish food during our stay. We started with the more American style food, and gradually tried Haggis and blood sausage - all tasty! The raspberry jam reminded us of the US’s Midwest. Porridge (oatmeal), was a favorite of mine as well. Special shout out to our friend, the guy from Nepal! We had a lovely, interesting conversation with him too. Many afternoons were spent in the Garden, having an afternoon drink and munching popcorn. I indulged in the spa, and had a hot stone massage and then booked a facial the next day. The Spa was just as I imagined, very soothing, and dimly lit. Ask for Michelle, she was perfect! My husband Jeff and I are Seniors, so we stayed in our room a few nights while we were there to enjoy room service. The steak was excellent. The staff was very helpful in steering us to pubs, restaurants and sightseeing. Cammy recommended the Queens Arms Pub and we went there more than once. We honestly felt sad to leave and fly back to California. The Kimpton Charlotte Square was a magical place, surrounded by beauty (and a gorgeous view of Edinburgh Castle, too). We think of the Kimpton and all of the friendly staff quite often. It was a fairytale to us, everything was so lush and green. If we ever have the opportunity to see Scotland again, the Kimpton Charlotte Square is the ONLY place to stay.

Nice hotel

Nice hotel, clean, very friendly and helpful staff. Raj was excellent. Room was nice - good size, comfortable with nice bathroom. Air conditioner did not work well and very low water pressure in the bathroom. Good breakfast and a cocktail hour.

An exceptional hotel. Beautiful rooms and excellent staff. Mael, in particular, went far out of her way to accommodate our needs

Big Disappointment

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

I always seek out the Kimpton brand when traveling, however, this was the most disappointing Kimpton I have come across so far. We were given a lackluster greeting at check-in and a room that was clearly not renovated and not one that is advertised much. It was also covered in dust on top of the wardrobe that we discovered by briefly placing a pillow up there. The spa facility was small and the sauna faces the pool so people awkwardly watch you sit in there from the water. How relaxing! They are supposed to be a very dog friendly brand and, yet, even when they were aware of my dog being part of my stay they had nothing prepared in our room for her. Getting these items was a pain and we ended up with only a water bowl and no apology for not providing anything in the first place. Not to mention they made me sign a waiver agreeing to a £200 fine if my dog is disruptive during our stay. I have never come across a waiver like this at any other Kimpton and if you look online they never state any pet policy regarding this. I feel this was completely unacceptable to not warn people beforehand online of their policies. I would never have bothered booking this hotel had I known the extent to which they don’t seem to actually want dogs there. The website would have you believe it was the most welcoming place ever for them. Thankfully we only stayed one night, but I wish I hadn’t stayed here at all.
