Lovely 5 night stay here. Positives: * Allowed us to check in quite early after an overnight flight, which was quite unexpected given the small size of the hotel and it being in the midst of the Fringe. * All staff we encountered were exceptional. They truly want to ensure you have a great stay. * While a bit small, the room we were in provided everything we needed with a lot of high quality amenities. * Location for us was perfect, particularly given the time we visited. Edinburgh in August can be an adventure, and we were happy to get away from the madness. * There is a bus stop in front of the hotel. It was super convenient getting to/from anywhere we were going in Edinburgh. Negatives: * It would be nice to receive an itemized receipt upon checkout; instead we were given an amount and shown tiny screen that was impossible to read. I found myself thinking I'm hoping that this is correct and that I'm not going to have to deal with this later. Not the best way to cap an otherwise exceptional stay. Overall, 4.8 stars out of 5.

We spent 2 nights in this hotel and were sadly very disappointed; this has got to be one the worst 5* hotels I've been to. Starting with the rooms, we were put in a 'superior' room which turned out to be very tiny, located in the basement and not even in the main building of the hotel but in a much simpler-looking building across the street. The walls are paper thin, we could hear every step and every conversation in the other rooms. We were greeted with sad 2 biscuits in a cookie jar which I thought was insulting. The water pressure in the bathroom was rather low so it wasn't possible to comfortably take a shower either. The room was so small it didn't even have any kind of closet so we had to keep all our luggage in the suitcases. The bed was likely 140 cm wide which is extremely narrow and I cannot comprehend that that's something that would even be a thing in a place that claims to be luxury and 5*. The breakfast was disappointing, plain and simple; I especially do not recommend the cooked options. The location was alright although the buses going into the city seem to be very unreliable and often don't show up at all or do not stop to pick up passengers. Overall I definitely do not recommend this hotel. The standard is very low for the price level and star rating.

Beautiful building, very friendly staff, good breakfast, location good, when in town for Murrayfield concert. Everywhere else some walking needed (buses go right in front of the hotel). Room 20 (in bottom floor): very, very small (room & bed), no air conditioning, right next to staff’s rooms / hotels toilets (woke up daily in talking, doors opening & shutting, vacuuming), because of the wood doors that isolated no noise at all. Window opens to a parking lot at the same level, bars in window necessary, i would think.

I agree wholeheartedly with the last one star review - Wow! Today, We were put into a semi-basement in the building across the riad which resembles a hostel with no room to swing a cat, no air conditioning and a big window leading to the side of the building on a busy road. The view is a broken window box with dead plants and weeds (we are here at the moment). The TV didn't work properly and when we came back from the Military Tatoo we had to ask for a fan. At £236.16 a night this is the biggest rip-off I have ever known and spoilt my evening at the Castle. I rang Small Luxury Hotels of the World and complained. My complaints are not going to stop there either because this is a scam!

I wanted to take some time to cool down before I wrote this review. The photos representing the rooms did not match the room we were offered. I wish I had taken a photo when we checked in. But I was so shocked that the only thing I could do was immediately leave. I don’t know if I wasn’t paying attention. Or the website was misleading. We were placed in a building across the street from the actual property. The room that we were given was ground floor in the back section of that building. It no way looked anywhere close to any of the other rooms that were presented on the website. This room was somewhere between a Hyatt Place and a motel six. There was no air conditioning. When I called ask about the air conditioning, they said oh it’s an old building. Really? Granted there was a heat wave going on at the time. 23c. When I opened the door, a blast of heat hit me it was easily over 35c. We attempted to open the window, but it was giving us fits. Plus, we were also very nervous about opening a window on a ground floor. I went over to the front desk, immediately headed to my key and stated that this was not going to work. The front desk person said they might be able to find us a fan. But there was no timeline or even guarantee that that was gonna happen. Of course there were no other rooms available. With that we left booked another room somewhere else. This room was booked with points. I was told at the time that the general manager is the only one that could have issue a refund. I’ve given them several weeks to reach out, but have heard absolutely nothing. This property is part of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith collection. At least a level four if not a level five property. Needless to say my expectations were high. Such an incredible disappointment.
