Wow what a stunning hotel, amazing decor, style and atmosphere! But that’s just the start…. We came for our 33rd wedding anniversary and were blown away with the attentiveness of Alexander. Wine in the room, interest in our day and what we’d been up to over the days we’d been here. He shared some tips on good places to go, food choices on the menu along with a bright smile and interesting chat! The meal we had on Saturday evening was exceptional, the breakfast was also incredible. We finished our stay with an afternoon tea served by the wonderful Katie, who also served us for our evening meal and breakfast…she never seemed to go home! She was also a dessert to the hotel. My wife and I returned from a visit to the Roseate Hotel in Edinburgh on Saturday 19th September. We had booked a four-night stay at a cost of £2,127. We arrived shortly after 6.00pm, 2 hours later than planned as our flight from London Gatwick was delayed by a technical fault. We were told on arrival that we were to be in a superior room. The room was on the second floor up 49 stairs from Reception with no lift which was challenging for a 79 year old and an 80 year old. The room itself was no bigger than a single room in a University Hall of Residence. It contained a small double bed, no wardrobe, only hooks on the wall and a small desk with an upright chair. The floor space was so limited that it was impossible to lay suitcases flat so clothes, most of which had to remain in the suitcase, became crumpled in a heap at the bottom. Access to the bathroom was up a step about 20cms high which presented a trip hazard. The bathroom had no bath, only a shower and in using the toilet it was easy to scald your knees on the heated towel rail. The light over the washbasin did not work and was not fixed although we told the receptionist on day one. On the evening of day one we were informed by a note under the door that the gas supply had failed and that there would be no cooked breakfast the next morning. The continental substitute provided cold, dry croissant and toast with a poor selection of fruit. The staff were pleasant and the one cooked breakfast we did have was good. However after trying not to fall out of the narrow bed and living out of suitcases we decided to call it a day and left for home after 3 days. The accommodation was definitely not of superior quality and very poor value for money. The hotel has an average Tripadvisor rating of 4.6 and is regarded as Very Good. This rating and the marketing text shown online were what persuaded us to book the hotel. For example the marketing comments included: “The Roseate Edinburgh is a captivating Hotel in the heart of the iconic capital city of Scotland. It is where vintage glamour meets contemporary luxury. The hotel, distinguished to be one of the best luxury, boutique hotels has stood at the gateway to old-town Edinburgh since the 1860s.” “The Roseate Edinburgh, a Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is nestled within four restored Victorian townhouses. The rooms offer freestanding baths and artisanal treats for ultimate comfort. The bar boasts a vintage whisky cabinet filled with rare finds, and the all-day menu features classic Scottish dishes with a unique twist.” Our own experience was at complete variance with the marketing hype and the average rating. We have been travelling to Edinburgh for some 50 years and nearly all of the visits have been relaxing and enjoyable. Our latest visit was the exception. The hotel was neither glamorous nor luxurious and the facilities were not as advertised. We were left deeply dissatisfied. My initial inclination was to give a rating of 2 (Poor) as the staff were polite and friendly. However the final insult arrived 5 days after we arrived home in the form of a traffic violation notice. This related to parking in the hotel car park notwithstanding that we had reserved a parking space before arriving and had given the registration number of our hire car to the receptionist immediately on arrival. So far it has taken over a week and three phone calls of complaint without any evidence that the matter has been resolved by the hotel staff. In conclusion I have no alternative but to give the Roseate Edinburgh a rating of 1 (Terrible).

An absolute gem in Edinburgh From the moment we walked through the door at The Roseate, we felt genuinely welcome. It's rare to find somewhere that manages to feel both elegant and completely relaxed, but this place gets it exactly right. A special mention has to go to Alex and Jude, who were outstanding. They were warm, attentive and full of great recommendations, and they made us feel like valued guests rather than just customers. Their friendliness and care really made our visit. The cocktails were superb: creative, beautifully presented and perfectly balanced. You can tell real thought and skill go into every drink. Paired with the gorgeous, intimate atmosphere, it made for a trip we didn't want to end. If you're in Edinburgh, do yourself a favour and visit. We can't wait to come back.
