Reviews for The Scotsman Hotel

Disappointed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 16 hours ago

First time visit to the grand cafe. The French onion soup cost £11.50 and was not worth it. The stock was tasteless and onions were not soft and sweet. Have been in grand cafes throughout Europe this one is not worth a visit.

The best place we have stayed in Edinburgh so far. Definitely coming back. Well worth that little bit extra.

Originally booked 2 nights for our Anniversary but added another as it was so good. We were upgraded to a suite which was fabulous with views of the bridges. This hotel gave us that touch of luxury with excellent service superb breakfast selection and numerous bars with cosy seating. The architecture is wonderful with a great story behind the property. A great base to explore Edinburgh. This is not a budget hotel so expect to pay that bit extra. Staff are all super friendly and enjoyed every minute.

The Scotsman is a gem

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

This beautiful old hotel located right next to Waverly train station and in the heart of old town Edinburgh is a gem. Their staff was friendly and accommodating. Their concierge Charlie was knowledgeable and welcoming. We were there for three nights and four days, we had a comforting home waiting for us every time we explored the town of Edinburgh we are in our 70s, so the coziness yet luxury that was offered by the hotel was greatly appreciated.

NOT GLUTEN FREE

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

If you are Gluten Free DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL. We enquired before our trip to check the breakfast was GF and were assured it was. After the first breakfast my wife had to rush off and was unwell. Luckily we had some tablets the doctor had prescribed. The next day we asked to speak to the chef and he assured us the bread was GF, we asked if the bread went into a separate toaster and he said "no'. We complained to reception, the man was shocked and said he would sort it. The next day when we went to breakfast the waiter said we should have received a letter (didn't receive it) he said we have bought a separate toaster, sausages and croissants. Feeling obliged she had a croissant, she again had to make a sharp exit from breakfast and had a bad reaction, this time instead of her feeling poorly for 1/2 a day it lasted quite a few days as it affects the autoimmune system. There were a few problems with the room but not important in the scheme of things. When we left my wife wasn't feeling too good so we decided to write to the General Manager on our return home as she was completely drained. We had a response which was very dismissive and condescending and didn't even offer to refund the breakfast money. It ruined what was supposed to be a special family birthday. I will be reporting them to Environmental Health as this is not acceptable. There are further details I could give but this is long enough.
