This hotel was very nice and clean. Location was pretty good, just off the royal mile. Coffee and tea with biscuits were included. Very nice room and bed. Atmosphere was pleasant. Staff excellent. There is a restaurant in the hotel. Bar was usually full. Prices good. Bring comfortable walking shoes.

Drinks with Shakespeare!

This place was almost too good to be true! Upon arrival from London by train we were only a few feet away from the front door. As we ducked in it was dimly lit by very old chandeliers and a huge marble fireplace. The night manager greeted us with so much hospitality. This is old world hospitality, where you feel like you stepped back in time. This is a place that if Shakespere was sitting in the corner sipping ale it would be commonplace. As we checked in we were upgraded to a room that was the size of an apartment with a beautiful bedroom, 2 marble bathrooms, a living room, a dining room and a huge window banquet that overlooks the city. The Christmas markets were going on so the whole city was alive. The city of Edinburgh was settled in 1124 and the Scotsman building was erected in 1902. The hotel has embraced the charm and history of Edinburgh through the design, while still feeling modern and clean. The staff at The Scotsman made our trip unforgettable. If you are going to Edinburgh do yourself a favor and stay here. Oh and tell Jonathan hello!!

Dissapointing return

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 6 days ago

Where to begin? A dissapointing experience after returning back to this hotel years after visiting. We expected the same welcome and same standard however it appears things have really gone down hill. The hotel room was dirty and dusty. The bed sheets and carpet had stains. The bathroom was the most concerning part of the trip though as there was an extremely foul smell in the shower, something that can only be described as raw sewage. Sleep - we were located on the lower floors and were awoken many times in the night by the elephant like steps above at early hours of the morning. Outside noises where to be expected but the hotel itself, the ceiling had a stain of mould where a leak had been and it felt as though the ceiling would cave in with how loud and heavy the banging above was. We stayed here a couple of years ago and breakfast was served in the grand cafe which was a pleasant and relaxing environment. This time around breakfast was served in the breakfast room which consisted of an oppressive atmosphere, extremely fried and luke warm buffet with too close together seats. In terms of the staff, we found them to be impersonal and unhelpful. Upon trying to find the breakfast room the first night we where having to weave through an event for a company with a desk placed right next to the breakfast room door and it seemed as though it was an inconvenience to everyone involved for the hotel to have hotel guests. Even faced with a hotel staff member who could clearly see we were lost and confused, they just stared at us and we were left to find it ourselves. The smoking outside the main door and hoards of tour circles is also particularly off putting and inconvenient when trying to get to the door. A health hazard.

I will not come back.

I don’t even know where to start, but I will not stay here ever again. Me and my friend booked the hotel room through the hotels own website, we ordered and got a confirmation mail confirming we had booked an apartment, that is related to the hotel. I had to email back and forth with the hotel, and call them to get them to fix this. We had never heard about the apartments and hadn’t been to that website at all, so we didn’t understand what had happened. Luckily the staff could fix it, and give us the hotel room we ordered. They charged us extra, even though this was not our fault. We didn’t receive any Prosecco either, even though it said you could expect that if you ordered from the hotels website. We experienced that the staff weren’t very friendly, and that made an impression of not feeling welcome. I’ve never experienced this at a hotel before.. The beds were extremely hard, we even got a mattress topper, but that did not help. I’m very dissapointed with the whole experience. The only nice thing I can say is that the hotel is very central and the reception was nicely decorated for Christmas. I will unfortunately not come back here. The hotel is too pricey to experience these kind of inconveniences, in my opinion.
