Fairmont Hotel Macdonald

We just stayed here for 1 night for Edmonton Expo. I haven’t stayed at this property for approx 16 yrs. While the property is still lovely, it is showing some wear and tear. The old furnishing (door knobs, crown moulding, etc) is beautiful but scuffed and dented in places. Our room was pretty quiet. Could hear a dog barking from another room at times. Doors slammed a bit. But nothing out of the ordinary. Staff was friendly and personable. Valet parking ($50) vs self park ($40). We opted for valet. They were speedy and courteous. Room service was prompt. Breakfast was delicious and fresh. Concerns—-No hot water. Very tepid water. That wasn’t ideal. Fridge didn’t keep items cold. Only one working elevator. We did not have to wait, though. No concerns. The hotel is under construction. This distracts from some of the charm. Should be lovely when it is completed. Overall, we would stay again!

We stay here quite often for special days. We were notified prior to our check in that the entrance was under construction, the Valet area was quite congested, so getting our vehicle took a bit more time that normal. There was one elevator that was out of service as well so that took additional time. We normally stay on the Gold level and have great service. Unfortunately we had to wait just under 10 minutes for someone to get to the desk even after we called to service. The Gold lounge area did not have an attendant that was readily available to that was a bit disappoint as well. That all being said we do love this hotel and we hope to see the completed renovations. I wish the price point we paid for the room would have reflected the lesser value we experience.

We splurged to stay here for our anniversary. This is a wonderful, classic hotel in downtown Edmonton overlooking the river valley. It is undergoing renovations but they are mostly completed except for the main dining room and the reception area. Rooms are renovated but have kept their footprint and the classic features (door handles for example.) Elegant rooms with high-end furnishings. A wonderful health club with saltwater pool, sauna, steam room, and hot tub. Valet parking and self-parking available.

The food was exceptional and everything was mostly good! My only big complaint that soured my experience for my birthday experience was with the server Aseno; she missed my cup specifically when she was taking coffee and went to another table. When me and my mother tried to get her attention she went to another table in front of me or straight up ignored us. When she did come by eventually with my coffee she did not serve more cream. Her kindess seemed forced rather than genuine and mostly ruined my experience and felt horrible as I have been going to Fairmont for my birthday mostly every year.

Not as nice as other Fairmont. As others have noted the building is cool and historic, but that’s the only good thing about it. Loud, unclean, careless employees. Stay away.
