Find the TRUE Fijian Culture in Town, not in the Make-believe of Shangri-La Fijiland

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

If you like to share meals with the screeching of tortured souls writhing in the flames of hell, then this is the place for you. If you like swimming in a huge pool crowded with children underfoot, getting ping-ponged with volley balls and watching infants sans diapers making contributions, then this is the place for you. Forget the bland food of many types including Asian, Spicey, Italian, and Fijian, all seemingly mingling as one with little distinctive flavors. All inclusive? Limits ae put on the expense of all meals, excesses added up at the end so keep track of ALL your bills for all meals. Of course, alcoholic drinks are extra (and extra expensive). A beer in town is $1.50, at the hotel $5.50). Walk to the 1970's gym at the far, far end of the resort, a passage through time. Beware when you go as the rainy season is the North American winter so escape the cold and trade it for the rain. However, the biggest disgrace is the that the true Fijian culture is denigrated to a caricature of itself. All the traditions of ceremonies, dress, greeting, legends and history is distilled to a money incentive insensitivity taking the general conception of Fijian culture and magnifying the recognizable parts as selling points. The best part of the vacation was a trip to a town market where one can interact with the people and discover the true warmth of the Fijian people. Bula

Money stolen, poor experience

Our 7-day family holiday was unfortunately overshadowed by a serious security breach and the theft of $900 FJD from our room. While we usually use the room safe, the chaos of arriving late with young children led to the wallet being tucked under the bed at the headboard. The Security Breach & Theft We tracked our spending carefully, having only spent $40 FJD of our original currency from Auckland Airport. During our first full day, our room was entered twice. Most alarmingly, we witnessed a staff member entering our room from across the basketball court. She remained inside for over 4 minutes and was not carrying any cleaning supplies. When confronted, she claimed she was "cleaning," even though the room had already been serviced. The management’s response was deeply disappointing: Lack of Empathy: No one checked on our well-being or asked if we were okay, despite our 8-year-old being visibly shaken and scared for her safety. No Accountability: The resort was not forthcoming and seemed "dumbfounded" during follow-ups. Financial Rigidity: When we felt unsafe and asked to leave, the resort refused to refund our remaining days, essentially forcing us to stay in a location where we no longer felt secure. Resort Layout & Facilities Scale: The resort is massive. We stayed in an "Oceanview" room, which was a very long walk in the heat. For families with young children, this is a major drawback—if you forget one item, it’s a grueling trek back. Dining: While there are 5 restaurants, two are adults-only. This left us with only the buffet, the Asian restaurant (which wasn't to our taste), and the grill. Eating at the same three places for a week became very repetitive. Air Conditioning: Locked at 23°C, which was insufficient for the Fiji heat. The unit was loud and automatically shut off whenever the door opened. Pools & Kids' Club Pools: There are three pools, but the main pool water appeared murky and unclean. While lifeguards are present, they didn't appear particularly attentive. Kids' Club: The sessions are split (morning/afternoon) rather than "drop-in," and the activities (face painting, crab races) are identical every day. My daughters (8 and 5) lost interest quickly due to the lack of variety. Inflatable Park: A highlight for the kids, though it needs better maintenance and cleaning. Final Verdict The police were helpful, but the resort management failed us. The theft of our activity money ruined our holiday, and the lack of concern for a family’s safety is unacceptable. I would not recommend this resort, particularly for families concerned about security and service.

Not sure why it’s a 5 star resort. Resort had a wonderful location. Rooms and facilities need upgrades and the room felt damp. And staff are not as friendly S Denarau. Better spots to stay in Fiji. And too expensive!!
