About the Hotel

In the mid-15th century, the noble Davanzati family donated a swathe of land on the Fiesole hills to a Franciscan order. Five centuries later, the monastery they built was to become Villa San Michele, a Belmond Hotel in Florence. Capturing all the romance of the Renaissance, the hotel boasts interiors steeped in history, lush Italian gardens and unparalleled views of the city and the Chianti hills beyond. Architectural highlights include a façade attributed to Michelangelo and a romantic, arched Loggia, now the hotel’s panoramic restaurant. From here, sunset views embrace the silhouetted domes and turrets of the Florentine skyline. In the nearby Cloister Bar, gentle piano music provides a soundtrack for stargazing through the glass roof. Forty-five individually designed rooms and suites are arrayed across the monastery building and gardens, including a private three-bedroom villa.

Inviting sanctuaries with custom-made furniture and Carrara marble bathrooms, many benefit from private gardens or terraces. The immaculate gardens burst with lemon trees, orange blossom and fragrant roses. Each spring, a centuries-old wisteria swathes the lawn-facing façade in purple blooms. The heated pool, perched on the hillside, offers breathtaking views of the Arno Valley. Private picnics, alfresco massages and yoga classes can all be enjoyed in the gardens. A changing exhibition of contemporary artworks and site-specific installations keeps the hotel’s creative spirit alive.

A faultless 3 night stay in a stunning hotel. Staff were incredible, as was the property, the location, the food and the service. Worth every penny.

Beautiful hotel with great views of Florence below. We had a delicious meal. The wait staff was wonderful and made us very comfortable over a leisurely lunch.

What an exceptional hotel

We stayed in a suite for 4 nights in August 2026. The refurbishment is fantastic. the quality of the rooms, fittings, facilities are all of the highest standard. The beds are possibly the best I've ever slept in. Daily gifts a nice touch and unlike other hotels the gifts are thoughtful and good quality. The restaurants are also of the highest quality. We ate at the San Michelle Restaurant twice. There's a varied menu to choose from. Food & service were both great. I can't believe there are better views of Florence than from the restaurant, and the finest garden in which to have an aperitivo in. We also ate at the pool restaurant which was also great - fabulous pizza's. While the hotel building, gardens and facilities are all great (as you'd expect) what stood out most were the staff. We interacted with more than 20 different people and they were all warm, engaging and diligent. None of the 'overbearing service by script' which is becoming so common in luxury hotels, the staff are exceptional providing high quality hospitality, professionally no matter what their role. Wonderful!

Villa San Michele, such an amazing property

Villa San Michele delivers an exceptional stay in the Florence hills. The staff provides excellent service, and the rooms feature a beautiful Italian design . The highlights of the property are the lovely pool area and its panoramic views over the city. Worth walking to Fiesole as well.

We have visited many beautiful places, but this stay was unforgettably lovely. I don’t know where to begin. The team, who were so kind and attentive, exceeded all our expectations. The historic building speaks a language of its own and has a special history. The interior is exquisitely beautiful and has been chosen with great attention to every detail. This idyllic spot cannot be beaten. We’d love to come back and will recommend it to our friends. Thank you for everything – we enjoyed every single minute. Wish you a lovely day and greetings to the team, Susanne

Villa San Michele is an extraordinarily beautiful place to stay when visiting Florence. The rooms are luxurious and the garden apartments offer guests their own private hideaway to relax in and take in the wonderful views over the hills down to the Duomo. Once you experience Villa San Michele you are very reluctant to leave!
