Great inclusive break. Don’t forget to visit the Wildlife Park and Fota House - both very suitable for wheelchair users

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

My husband is disabled and uses a wheelchair constantly. He requires a hoist to transfer and so I hired a hoist from Flynn Medical based in Cork . The Reservations team were so helpful in advance of our stay - taking the hoist dimensions to ensure that it would fit under the bed and through doors. I also bought an electrical back hoist with me to help his comfort levels in bed. On arrival all the staff were superb - so helpful and warm. The food & the spa were wonderful and my husband was able to have a spa treatment . This hotel is suitable for other people with impairments but you will need the correct equipment. Well done.

A Good Family Hotel

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

The Fota Resort Hotel is that relatively rare beast, a five star family hotel and it does pretty well on both counts. The hotel has some shortcomings, but nothing that is going to spoil a stay. The location is superb, both in terms of its own setting and nearby attractions that include Fota Wildlife Park and Fota House. Various other tourist sites, such as Cobh, are within a short distance. Unlike several other Irish golf hotels we have stayed in, the golf course itself is well out of sight of the hotel and does not take over the entire estate. There are several good walks in the grounds, though not all are great for strollers or buggies. We were a three generation party of five with number five being 15 months of age so we were not in a position to complain about too many children, but if you don’t like small children, it might be better to go somewhere else. Our room was spacious, comfortable and well equipped though there was not a huge amount of storage space. The room lighting was OK with reading lights that were reasonably effective. Fresh bottled water and chocolates were supplied every day. The bathroom was generous in size, but like many bathrooms in upmarket hotels, poorly designed. The bath and shower were fine, but the lighting was dim and there was no shaving mirror. As the only mirror was the other side of the sink, this meant shaving by feel as you could not see what you were doing. There was also almost no room to put toiletries like toothpaste and shaving cream beside the sink. Why are so many bathroom designers incompetent? There are three restaurants in the hotel or, to be accurate, two in the hotel and one about 300 metres away in the golf club. The latter, called the Clubhouse, caters to a mix of families with children and presumably the occasional golfer. The food there is pretty run of the mill. Having tried it the first night, we shifted our custom to the number two restaurant in the bar area which was much better in all respects including the food, though it also had a lot of children, some of whom made their presence felt from time to time. As one was in our party that we kept our heads down! Children are not allowed in the main restaurant which also has the best food (and the highest prices). All three have good, friendly service. Breakfast is in the bar restaurant and is a mix of menu and buffet with plenty of choice including (one day anyway) DIY pancakes. The staff in the hotel are friendly and helpful (and tolerant of small children, probably part of the job description). We would be happy to return there.

Great family holiday for younger kids with flexible booking

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We had a great trip/ We stayed in the courtyard lodges and we have two small kids 3 and 7 months and we found it just the right mix of kids activities and adult luxuries. They were also very accommodating and allowed us to postpone our trip when our youngest child got sick the day before we were meant to check in. This means a lot and shows that they are understanding of the challenges of travelling with small kids and would recommend to anyone for a nice family break. The Fota Wildlife park is right beside it and is probably the best zoo there is in Ireland. Lots of activities for kids in the resort and close by and the food and drinks in the resort were all very nice. Would recommend it to anyone.
