Reviews for Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

Gorgeous Nature, Brilliant Guides, Impeccable Design, Heart & Wisdom in every detail!

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a global leader in regenerative tourism. This place possesses awe-inspiring beauty. I have never been on a flower safari before - this was a pinnacle experience. Their commitment to local community empowerment, biodiversity stewardship, and creating transformational tourism experiences was evident in every detail that I encountered during my visit. I traveled by myself and stayed in the Garden Lodge for 4 nights - I think this was an ideal length for a visit to experience the diverse nature areas: ancient Milkwood trees, Afro-montane forest, Fynbos, the beach, the farm, and Klipgat Cave. I tried all of the experiences that the reserve offers (I didn't do any extra add ons). The Grootbos Florilegium is a world-class museum of beautifully presented botanical painting of flowering plants growing in the reserve - this is such an astonishing part of the place; the Florilegium is remarkable and magical. Horse riding was fantastic. My guide was a botanical expert, wise, and so interesting. The kitchen and the food ethos was top-tier slow food. The plating of every dish aesthetically recreated the botanical flowering beauty of the place. My lodging, and all of the built environment, were gorgeously decorated and throughout high-end green materials ethos was applied. Amazing spa. Fantastic walks.

Hospitality perfected.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

From the moment we arrived, Grootbos set a tone unlike anywhere I have experienced in a lifetime of extensive travel. Three staff members greeted us by name as our car pulled in — not as a rehearsed gesture, but with genuine warmth and bright, shining faces that told you immediately this was something different. And that, it turned out, was the defining thread of the entire weekend. Every single staff member we encountered carried that same glow — a quiet radiance that spoke of people who feel safe, respected, valued, and truly happy to be there. In a world where hospitality so often feels performed, the authenticity here was striking. This is extraordinarily rare. I have stayed at exceptional properties across the globe, and I have never encountered a team that so consistently embodied sincere, genuine kindness. The care shown to guests was clearly a reflection of the care shown to the staff — and it showed in every interaction. The food was impossible to fault — beautifully presented, abundant, creative, and deeply satisfying. The best croissant I have ever eaten was served here, and the service that accompanied every meal was knowledgeable and attentive without ever feeling intrusive. The natural beauty of the reserve is breathtaking, almost beyond description — but what elevates Grootbos above the scenery is the immaculate care taken with every detail. Not a single corner was overlooked; the facilities and grounds were maintained to a standard that matched the landscape itself. Grootbos is not merely a destination. It is a living example of what happens when people are placed at the heart of a vision.

I recently had the priviledge to celebrate my 50th birthday at Grootbos Forest Lodge. It was the best ever birthday. I will be back for many many more stays and making of memories.

Couples Getaway

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We stayed at Grootbos for a short couples getaway and to enjoy a visit to the Forest Spa at Forest Lodge. As always, our stay was amazing. Every detail is considered in the guest rooms - spacious, well-appointed and luxurious without being ostentatious. The treatments at the Forest Spa were fantastic with excellent therapists and treatment rooms which feel a part of the surrounding forest. Dining is excellent with food that is locally & sustainably sourced and served at a level that is simply world-class. The wine list must be one of the best in South Africa with a selection of Cape Winemaker Guild wines that one does not often get to sample. Overall excellent as always!

One of a Kind Experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

In the span of 12 hours we went horseback riding, on a 4x4 flower safari, toured an amazing botanical art gallery, ate three absolutely delicious meals and went for a hike on the beach where we visited caves where people lived 85,000+ years ago. Our guide was super informative and personable.

Recently stayed at Grootbos and loved every minute of it. The suites and lodge are wonderful, and the food is superb. We enjoyed all of the staff, and our sight seeing excursions were excellent. I wish we had had a couple more days there.
