Solo travel taught me to trust the timing of my life. During my second stay at Grootbos, that trust expanded exponentially through nature. I planned to spend three days ‘switching off’ from reality after wrapping personal projects through the festive season. Little did I know I’d be switched on to a whole new way of looking at the world. The tranquil pathways between my suite and the lodge recalibrated my senses, evoking childhood memories of climbing trees to rise above the routine of school and homework. The guides and hospitality team made me feel completely at home before I had even received my welcome drink. Their intentionality, wisdom and genuine warmth sparked a childlike curiosity that had been dimmed by too much screen time. It’s truly rare to feel inspired in solitude without feeling lonely or disconnected. Hikes beneath trees with levitating branches, alongside delicate blossoms pushing up through shrubs charred by wildfires, provided otherworldly perspective shifts. All meals wholesomely joined the dots between each experience. After a guided 4x4 meander of the reserve, it was comforting to see the array of farm-grown produce soon to be curated into cuisine by the chefs. Looking back, I had no single favourite dish because they were all symbolic of how nourishing and energising my stay at Garden Lodge was. My personal highlight was feeling a sense of rebirth from an egg-shaped bath, as candlelight and essential oils flickered and swirled against wallpaper displaying birds and flowers from their fynbos art gallery. I will always carry the experience of acclimatising to a ‘timezone’ shaped by nature's flow and functions, and a team of people driven to honour and translate its timeless magic.

It's food for the soul—a place that allows you to slow down, reconnect, and leave feeling refreshed. The team always goes above and beyond, but what makes Grootbos so extraordinary is the way they make you believe that dreams really can come true, for both adults and children alike. We are absolutely in love with this incredible place, and I am especially grateful that I could share this little piece of heaven on earth with my mom. Watching her experience the magic of Grootbos was such a privilege and a memory I'll treasure forever. To the entire Grootbos team: thank you for your warmth, kindness, and the passion you put into every detail. You are all truly amazing, and we can't wait to return.
