⭐ One star. A truly unforgettable five-star experience — if your idea of luxury is being frightened, patronized and medically lectured by people who apparently graduated from the University of Ancient Superstitions. As a cancer survivor, I thought a luxury spa might be a reasonable place to relax. Apparently, I was mistaken. At the Spa of Mandarin Oriental, my medical history became the main attraction. The spa collected sensitive information about my health despite being a wellness facility rather than a medical institution, and the person making decisions about my treatment was not a doctor. But why let qualifications get in the way of confidence? I was then told that “massage will spread metastases.” Yes, you read that correctly. For a moment, I wondered whether I had accidentally walked into a spa in the 14th century, where oncology is practiced alongside astrology, leech therapy and an unfortunate amount of candlelight. My oncologist, thankfully, still practices in the 21st century. The situation became even more extraordinary when the service person allegedly stormed out of the spa to discuss my medical condition with other people, without my consent. Apparently, at this spa, “privacy” is one of those optional wellness treatments. The way I was treated was deeply patronizing. Instead of being treated as an adult capable of discussing my own health with qualified medical professionals, I was treated as though the mere word ”cancer” had transformed me into a walking biohazard. The result? A service designed to provide relaxation, comfort and pleasure became an experience of fear and humiliation. My oncologist's response was considerably less diplomatic. His advice was essentially: “Stay away from such toxic ignorance.” Excellent advice. I intend to follow it. And then comes my favorite part. When I raised my concerns with Mandarin Oriental, the manager distanced the hotel from the spa, explaining that the spa is an independent organization. How wonderfully convenient. The spa may be “independent,” but apparently it is independent enough to operate under the Mandarin Oriental umbrella while still being bookable through the Mandarin Oriental website. It's a fascinating business model: Five-star branding when taking the booking; “we're not responsible” when something goes wrong. One might even call it a wellness version of Schrödinger's spa. So what exactly did I receive for my money? ✓ Sensitive health information collected in a non-medical wellness environment. ✓ A disturbing lack of confidence that such information would remain private. ✓ My medical condition discussed with others without my consent. ✓ Patronizing treatment based on my cancer history. ✓ A terrifying medical claim that belongs considerably closer to superstition than modern oncology. ✓ A relaxing treatment transformed into an ordeal. ✓ And, finally, the hotel explaining that the spa is someone else's problem — despite making the spa available through its own booking platform. Five-star establishment? I give it one star. Not because I expected miracles. I simply expected basic privacy, dignity and a minimum level of scientific literacy. Apparently, that was an excessively ambitious treatment request. I have survived cancer. I certainly don't need to spend my time recovering from the medieval medicine department of a luxury spa. I will be taking my business somewhere that understands the difference between wellness and witchcraft. And, ideally, somewhere that has discovered the 21st century.

The location was perfect, close to the stores and lovely bars & restaurants. Upon arrival, the staff was so friendly that it really stood out. Every single staff member smiled and gave you the feeling that they really cared. The room was spacious and there was a small surprise for my birthday so only 10/10 experience!
