A landmark hotel in Scotland’s biggest, most vibrant city. Kimpton Blythswood Square has been a prestigious address since the early 19th century. Overlooking a private garden square, the hotel's Georgian townhouses were originally home to wealthy merchants and were later turned into the club headquarters for The Royal Scottish Automobile Club. Today, the Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel has been spruced up for the 21st century, with a multi-million pound refurbishment that has refreshed all of the existing guest rooms and suites with an elegant new look and the launch of the 1,900 sq. feet two-bedroom Penthouse Suite with its own private balcony, media room and dining area. The Hotel also hosts a 10,000 sq. ft. Spa facility with 9 luxury treatment rooms, a thermal suite, 2 relaxation pools, and a lounge and café area.

We chose Kimpton Blythswood Square for a special anniversary celebration, expecting a luxurious experience befitting one of Glasgow's best-known hotels. Sadly, our stay was a disaster from start to finish, and the way our problems were handled made an already disappointing experience considerably worse. I would strongly advise anyone planning a special occasion to think carefully before booking. A disappointing arrival and a complete lack of information On check-in, we were given no information about the spa and weren't even shown to our room, which was particularly disappointing given that we had booked one of the hotel's most expensive rooms. The room had no remote control, meaning another trip downstairs to reception to ask for one and to find out how to access the services. We then had to go downstairs yet again to ask about the spa. We were told that flip-flops were provided only to day guests, leaving hotel residents to wear the disposable slippers supplied in their rooms. These slippers carried a clear warning not to wear them in wet conditions, yet we were expected to use them to get to the spa. This hardly inspires confidence in a supposedly luxury experience. The spa arrangements were equally disappointing. It felt as though day guests were treated better than people actually staying at the hotel, with residents restricted to just three hours in the evening or two hours very early in the morning. This is not the relaxing, indulgent experience we had anticipated. A broken shower, a missed anniversary dinner and an exhausting evening When we returned from the spa, we discovered that the over-bath shower wasn't working. Once again, I had to make the journey downstairs to reception, this time with wet hair, because nobody answered the room service phone. As we were staying for just one night to celebrate our anniversary, we were understandably unwilling to spend the evening waiting indefinitely in our room for maintenance and a shower. After further discussion, I was eventually permitted to use a shower in another room, a considerable distance away and down a flight of stairs. Quite frankly, this was an appalling solution for guests paying premium room rates. The entire ordeal meant we missed our anniversary dinner reservation. We tried to salvage the evening by eating at the hotel, but at around 9.30 pm staff appeared more interested in packing away than looking after guests. We were left with a limited choice of snacks and drinks, served by bar staff who came across as thoroughly unwelcoming. By this point, we were so exhausted and frustrated that we couldn't face searching for another restaurant in Glasgow so late in the evening. Our special anniversary celebration had effectively been ruined. Breakfast and customer service were equally disappointing Breakfast was nowhere near the standard expected of a five-star hotel. I ordered eggs Benedict-style with hollandaise and was served what appeared to be stale muffins topped with cold, hard-boiled eggs rather than freshly poached eggs. It was a thoroughly disappointing meal and a poor end to an already dreadful stay. I was kept waiting in reception to speak to the duty manager about the numerous problems we had experienced. When I eventually spoke to her, I was struck by how little concern she seemed to show. There was no meaningful sense of urgency, empathy or genuine desire to put things right. I asked to speak to her again at checkout, hoping for a more appropriate response. Unfortunately, the attitude felt much the same: she seemed more interested in getting us on our way than acknowledging how badly our anniversary stay had gone. A small reduction to the bill was offered, which felt wholly inadequate given the extent of the disruption and the experiences we had missed out on. As we left, the concierge remarked, "Maybe don't stay again when so much is riding on it." The implication was that we shouldn't return for an occasion as important as our anniversary. I found this comment particularly astonishing. Surely a special occasion is precisely when a luxury hotel should be making every effort to get things right, not using it as a reason to dismiss a guest's disappointment. A disappointing response after our stay I subsequently contacted Kimpton to explain our experience, hoping that someone would take the time to understand what had happened. The response I received felt glib and impersonal, doing little to reassure me that our concerns had been taken seriously. It left me with the impression that the hotel was more concerned with appearances than with the experience of paying guests. Our verdict From the lack of a proper welcome and basic room provisions, to the broken shower, missed anniversary dinner, poor breakfast and dismissive management, almost every aspect of this stay fell short of what we expected. Mistakes can happen in any hotel. What distinguishes a genuinely good hotel is how it responds when things go wrong. In our case, the service recovery was just as disappointing as the original problems. We paid for a premium room and expected a five-star experience. Instead, we spent our anniversary repeatedly going back and forth to reception, trying to resolve basic issues, missing our dinner reservation and feeling that nobody particularly cared. We would not return to Kimpton Blythswood Square, and I would not recommend it to anyone planning a special occasion where the hotel experience really matters. A beautiful building and a luxury price tag mean very little when the hospitality, attention to detail and customer care simply aren't there.

We’ve just returned from a girls’ night away at Kimpton Blythswood Square and couldn’t fault a single thing. From check-in to the restaurant and social hour, the service was amazing. Our room had everything we needed, the spa was lovely, and even the valet parking was seamless. A special mention has to go to David, the head concierge, who really made our stay. He was so welcoming and attentive, and made us feel thoroughly looked after throughout our visit. He’s a real credit to the hotel. Thank you to David and the whole team for such a wonderful stay. We look forward to staying with you again!

We were hugely disappointed with our 3 night stay at Blythswood Square. Upon a very rainy arrival the 2 doormen were too busy talking on their mobile phones to help us with luggage. We had paid for a superior bedroom which appeared, on first viewing, to be ok. But the bathroom let it down. Black marble ( as I now know is used in all their rooms) does not clean well. Cup stains, scuffs and damage by probably cleaning has left the marble looking scruffy and needs to be replaced. I asked politely at Reception if we could change our room. I was offered a ground floor room whose bathroom was in the same state as ours. These bathrooms probably looked splendid 30 years ago but should be replaced urgently. The spa area needs a deep clean. In the sauna there was a smell of urine and under the bench I found several solidified drips of some kind of ‘globby’ substance.. which should not have been there. I informed the staff at reception who didn’t seem to think it was a problem. Breakfast was average. The best bit if our stay was the bed which was very lovely. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel.
