Beautiful stay at the Metropole

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

The Sofitel Metropole is a grand beacon in the heart of Hanoi. The hotel has a rich history which we were privileged to witness during a tour of the war bunkers built underneath the hotel during the Vietnam War. In our travels we stayed many magnificent hotels, but the staff at the Sofitel Metropole really made a difference with set it apart from all the others. Steven our butler could not have been more accommodating, helpful and friendly. The warmth that the staff showed us managed to make the grand hotel feel almost intimate, like a home away from home. Buffet breakfast was wonderful, their signature pho live station every morning and fresh mangoes were our favourite! Bella and the live jazz band was the absolute highlight of our stay. Sofitel Metropole is one of many luxury hotels in the world, but the exceptional staff is what will make us choose it all over again.

Our stay at the Sofitel Metropole Hanoi was nothing short of exceptional. The property itself is stunning — a perfect blend of historic charm and refined luxury — but what truly made our experience unforgettable was the incredible service. A very special thank you to Steven, whose attentiveness and impeccable attention to detail elevated our stay beyond expectations. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and he anticipated our needs with such professionalism and genuine care. His thoughtful touches and warm hospitality made us feel truly valued and incredibly well looked after throughout our visit. The dining, ambience, and overall experience were flawless. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Hanoi and looking for a truly luxurious and memorable experience.

Five stars for the bones, one star for the night. Four seems fair.

The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi is one of those rare hotels where history is not merely decoration — it is the atmosphere itself. The Heritage Wing, the colonial architecture, the sense of a place that has witnessed a century of the world passing through: all of this is genuine and irreplaceable. In different circumstances, this would be a five-star review without hesitation. The circumstances, however, were these. Loud roadworks directly beneath my room began at 2 AM. Earplugs did not help. No prior warning had been given at check-in. A call to reception at 4 AM was met with a wait that felt very long before a room change was finally arranged. At 9:25 AM, a housekeeper entered without knocking and switched on the full lights — ending what little sleep remained. One of the more unpleasant nights of my travels. The original room had a persistent smell consistent with mold or a contaminated air conditioning unit — something other guests have also noted in reviews. The corridors featured dehumidifiers with red warning lights indicating they were full and unattended. Small details, but telling ones in a hotel of this price and reputation. Breakfast was a missed opportunity. Two cheese varieties and a baguette with the texture of styrofoam, no à la carte menu, inconsistent service — in a hotel billing itself as a French colonial landmark, this falls short. As a Platinum member, there was no welcome gesture upon arrival — not a note, not a small amenity. A basic courtesy that any mid-range property would extend automatically. The initial management response to my complaint was polite but thin: a USD 100 credit offered to a guest who had already announced his departure. This would have been a one-star review. Then Ms. My Nguyen, Duty Manager, stepped in. With genuine warmth, real effort, and no small amount of personal grace, she turned the situation entirely around — offering a complimentary night, an upgrade to a three-room suite in the Heritage Wing, and a personal invitation to tea. She is exactly the kind of person that makes a legendary hotel live up to its name. Five stars for the hotel it can be. One star for the night it delivered. Four stars feels honest — and hopeful.

We spent 2 nights there, we were overall amazed by the level of hospitality. Location is prime, room is top cleaned. Accor loyalty is well awarded. Check-in is excellent especially, in the lounge. Front-office very reactive and helpfull. Personnel are kind and smiling, spoke a good English, I liked talking to the door guys when I went out to smoke.. Pool is nice and always personnel tried to bring water and some snack while at the pool. Breakfast is perfect with good choice of quality food. Lounge choice of food and drinks is good. We enjoyed the hotel historic tour, and were surprised to learn how the hotel contributed at major historic events and hosted many famous guests. The management are doing an excellent job, keeping high quality standards. Special thanks to Ms. Linh Chi for her kindness and for being careful aand listening to customer concerns. We hope to come to visit you again, with the next opportunity. Thank you

A Perfect Stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

We have stayed at the Sofitel several times before. To be honest, we encountered minor issues of one kind or another every time. Though they were only small problems, they kept our stays from being perfect. However, Sofitel is such an elegant hotel that we always end up coming back.We checked into the Sofitel again on the final day of our trip to Vietnam this May, and this stay turned out to be absolutely flawless. Our butler, Mikey, had already arranged all the details of our stay via WhatsApp well before our arrival. Since we were traveling with an 86-year-old, he made the check-in process as smooth and hassle-free as possible so we could rest as soon as possible. Even in the evening, he proactively checked in with us to see if we needed any assistance. The doormen stationed at the two main gates were incredibly attentive and professional. The moment we got out of the car, they quickly arranged a wheelchair for us and took full care of our luggage without us having to worry about a thing. Everything was handled in perfect order. We stayed in the Heritage Wing this time. It was our first time staying in this section. Both the rooms and the entire building blend modern facilities with old-world charm. What’s more, the highlight of our stay — Le Club Bar — is also located right here. Speaking of Le Club Bar, let’s start with the afternoon tea. Mr. Thach took excellent care of us. He was incredibly polite, thoughtful and professional. After the perfect afternoon tea, we could hardly wait to come back for evening cocktails. At the evening cocktail hour, we met the lovely Ngoc and the charming Tuan. They were so warm and approachable that we felt like we were with old friends we’d known for years, while remaining impeccably professional at the same time. Ngoc noticed every little need we had and never let our glasses stay empty. The cocktails Tuan made were absolutely stunning. We especially loved how he ingeniously incorporated Vietnamese flavors into the recipes.Together with Mr Thach, they gave us the happiest happy hour. The experience was so wonderful that we simply must return here in the evening for a nightcap or two. The three of them once again made us feel as though we were being looked after in a friend’s home. I’ve said “perfect” far too many times, but it truly is the only word that can describe this stay. This wasn’t just a job done perfectly. It was perfect passion. Perfect professionalism. Perfect hospitality.
