Reviews for Mangapapa Hotel

very disappointing

I booked the VIP cottage for our wedding night and I messaged the hotel to let them know of our special occasion. I have had high teas at Mangapapa several times and was expecting good service. Unfortunately, this time our experience was very disappointing. There was no acknowledgement whatsoever of our special day on arrival nor during lunch at the restaurant with our 2 witnesses. We asked the waiting staff to take a picture of us and mentioned that we just got married a few hours beforehand. The response was literally " yeah I know". The food was served without making sure there were no food allergies, and only after asking what was served did we get some information about the food on our plates. Dinner service was considerably better, lovely staff that were very attentive. Breakfast was good too. We booked the accomodation to use the spa, but after check in we were told the spa was broken and wouldn't get fixed that day. We were given a bottle of rose to make up for this. We don't drink alcohol so that did not really make it any better. In comparison to other hotels I did not find the accommodation anything special. It took 3 staff to get the fireplace in the cottage going. There's no Netflix on the TV in the bedroom. The bed is comfortable enough though. I really regret that I booked Mangapapa to celebrate our very special day as it really wasn't the special experience that it should have been, and we will never get that day back. We were very close to leaving and going home again as we live only 30 min away. I was tossing up between booking Mangapapa and Craggy Range and I now know I should have chosen Craggy Range instead.

We had an amazing experience from the moment we arrived. The service was excellent. The accommodation was beautiful, the hotel was immaculate and the staff were so helpful. Thank you for an amazing visit. Just what we needed after a very long weekend. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful estate and buildings. Well looked after. We stayed in the Heritage suite, very peaceful and quiet. The pool and spa area were lovely, clean pool & spa. We stayed 2 nights dinner, bed & breakfast. The food was fantastic- excellent produce, treated with respect. The staff are very focussed & professional with just the right level of attention. All very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. This place is special and the staff are probably its best asset- this includes all the housekeeping, reception, restaurant, bar and chefs. All under the supervision of Jim, the manager, whose kindness and enthusiasm for his hotel and locale are contagious. Well done & don’t change a thing. 🙏

Fabulous Stay!

What a great find in the serene countryside of Hawkes Bay! Small, gated, historical estate turned boutique hotel, complete with swimming pool, grass tennis courts, apple orchard and flock of sheep on lovely and peaceful grounds. I arrived from the Napier airport in an UBER after the gates were closed (after 800pm), so I was buzzed in and someone was waiting for me in front of the hotel at the end of the long tree lined drive to welcome me in and to help with my bags. Check in is at the bar off of the lounge. I believe that there are only 12 rooms at the Magnapapa. Since the restaurant closed at 8pm, which is typical of the area, I had preordered some food with the hotel. This, along with an added dessert and freshly baked bread served with honey butter, was promptly brought up to my room. Breakfast is served in the conservatory with large windows looking out to the grounds. Breakfast consists of a small buffet with delicious fresh fruit including the very unusual and delicious red kiwi along with quite a few delectable made to order breakfast options; it was the perfect way to start the day. I had dinner once at the hotel with some of their delicious private label wine. Dinner was good, the service, as it was at breakfast, was five star. Rooms are serviced twice daily. Sweet “treats” are left in the room after each service, as well as nice chamomile tea after the second service. There was a welcomed, small parlor/sitting room attached to my bedroom. The main bedroom was spacious and looked out over the swimming pool towards the spa building. The en-suite bathroom was well appointed, modern and generous in size. Service was first rate! Housekeeping was seemingly invisible and took my clues as to how I liked things left and kept things accordingly. Management worked with a local bicycle company who had dropped off my bicycle rental; they charged and kept my rented e-bike for me. This was so convenient because there are cycling trails nearby that take you to many, many wineries, the coast and even to Napier city center. I highly recommend Magnapapa for your stay in Hawkes Bay and will absolutely stay here, if I find myself in Hawkes Bay again.
