Regent Hong Kong: Prestige, Problems, and the Pursuit of Perfection…

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Hong Kong. A leading Asian metropolis requiring little introduction. It is a city shaped by Chinese culture, British colonial influence, and generations of migration from all walks of life. It is the culinary capital of Cantonese cuisine, the gateway between China and the international world, and a cultural stronghold whose identity continues to make Hong Kong unmistakably Hong Kong. Hong Kong has long been regarded as one of the finest cities in the world for luxury hospitality. Within this Special Administrative Region, locals will often tell you that the pinnacle of hotel stays lies along the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui. For decades, Tsim Sha Tsui has remained one of the most fiercely competitive luxury hotel markets in Asia, where internationally renowned brands compete relentlessly for the title of “Best Hotel in Hong Kong.” In many ways, earning that title may well mean becoming one of the greatest hotels in the world. The Regent Hong Kong has remained an iconic part of the city’s hospitality landscape since 1980. Positioned directly along Victoria Harbour, the property offers what many consider to be some of the finest hotel views imaginable in Hong Kong. This waterfront luxury hotel has long been known for hosting celebrities, dignitaries, and distinguished travelers from around the globe. Formerly operating as an InterContinental Hotel between 2001 and 2023, the Regent brand made its highly anticipated return in 2023, re-establishing itself as a modern luxury icon that blends contemporary design with timeless hospitality. As an IHG Diamond Elite member with Royal Ambassador status, it had long been a dream of mine to finally experience this legendary property and passionately write about the stay. The critical question, however, was whether this hotel truly lives up to the immense prestige surrounding its name. My expectations were extraordinarily high — arguably higher than for any InterContinental or Kimpton property I had previously visited. With that said, here is my long-awaited review of the Regent Hong Kong. Booking & Pre-Arrival I booked my stay through the IHG App on the evening prior to arrival for a one-night weekend stay from May 16th to 17th, 2026. Even an entry-level Classic Room with no guaranteed harbour view or bed type was priced at an astonishing HKD $4,410 (approximately USD $563). Thankfully, I managed to redeem 76,000 IHG One Rewards points to fully cover the room cost. Even then, this redemption proved surprisingly difficult to secure, as most weekend nights at the Regent regularly exceed 100,000 points per night. The only reasons we managed to secure the booking at this comparatively lower redemption rate were Hong Kong’s heavy rain forecast and the fact that the reservation was made less than 24 hours prior to arrival. As someone who completed the reservation at approximately 6:30 PM the evening before arrival, I did not receive any form of pre-arrival communication despite holding both Diamond Elite and Royal Ambassador status. While I understand the booking was made last-minute, I have still received welcome emails or calls from other IHG properties under similar circumstances, including the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong, Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island, and Kimpton Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong. Considering the Regent’s exceptionally premium pricing, it would have been thoughtful to at least receive an email regarding bed preferences, arrival time, or other stay preferences, especially since my reservation did not guarantee a specific bed type. Although I submitted preferences within the reservation itself, there was unfortunately no option to directly request Twin Beds through the booking interface. Arrival On the day of arrival, I noticed through the IHG App that our reservation had been upgraded to a 1 King Classic Harbour View Daybed Room. As I was traveling with my father, we had hoped to secure a room with two beds instead. After arriving in Hong Kong through the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal, a short MTR ride brought us directly to the front entrance of the Regent Hong Kong. Upon entering the dimly lit reception lobby, I was warmly greeted by Erwina, who personally escorted us to the Club Regent Lounge for check-in. There, Club Regent attendant Karen kindly invited us to relax in the lounge while the check-in formalities were completed behind the scenes. During the process, the team successfully arranged a Twin Bed room adjustment and even confirmed our dinner reservation at Harbourside. A welcome Dubai Chocolate Bar and personalized arrival letter were also presented upon check-in. Afterward, Karen personally escorted us to Room 1018, introduced the room’s features, and even kindly helped us take a family photograph overlooking Victoria Harbour. In my humble opinion, this was an excellent and memorable arrival experience that initially set the tone for what felt like a truly special stay. IHG Diamond Elite Welcome Amenity Choice Interestingly, the Regent Hong Kong currently offers Diamond Elite members only two welcome amenity choices: either 600 bonus IHG points or breakfast for two at Harbourside. Given that Club Regent access already includes breakfast service, the Harbourside breakfast option became largely redundant in our case. This ultimately left the 600-point option as the only realistically practical choice available. What felt particularly surprising was the absence of a welcome drink voucher as an alternative option. At a property of this caliber, it would arguably feel far more meaningful and flexible to allow loyal guests the opportunity to enjoy a signature cocktail or beverage experience at venues such as Qura Bar or the Lobby Lounge instead. Location & Accessibility The hotel enjoys an excellent location directly along Victoria Harbour, adjacent to K11 Musea, East Tsim Sha Tsui Station, and the Avenue of Stars. However, one unexpectedly difficult aspect of the stay involved entering and exiting the hotel from Salisbury Road via public transportation. Guests are currently required to either navigate a staircase or walk up a fairly steep ramp to access street level. For fully able-bodied guests, this may not pose much difficulty. However, traveling with our 93-year-old grandmother made this arrangement significantly more challenging, particularly during rainy weather. Unfortunately, there did not appear to be any immediately visible accessibility assistance or clearly communicated alternative route available during our visit. While arriving from Salisbury Road near the K11 Musea entrance, our grandmother ultimately had to slowly make her way up the staircase leading toward the hotel entrance in wet and slippery conditions. When we later inquired with the staff, we were informed that a call button for luggage and wheelchair assistance was available at the Salisbury Road entrance. However, this was not clearly noticeable to us upon arrival, particularly while assisting an elderly family member during the rain. Given the steep incline of the ramp and the staircase-focused access point, we found the arrival experience surprisingly inconvenient for a hotel positioned at the highest level of luxury hospitality. Greater visibility, clearer signage, or more proactive staff presence near the entrance would significantly improve accessibility and guest reassurance. Hopefully, the ongoing renovations surrounding K11 Musea will conclude soon, as previous access routes through the mall reportedly offered a far more convenient experience. Club Regent Experience Access to Club Regent is available either through qualifying suite bookings or through IHG’s annual Club Lounge Milestone Reward benefit. Located on the second floor, Club Regent offers breakfast, afternoon tea, evening cocktails, and personalized concierge-style guest services. The lounge itself is beautifully designed, featuring a variety of seating arrangements including bar seating, dining tables, and residential-style lounge areas. Thanks to its elevated position overlooking the Lobby Lounge and Victoria Harbour, the atmosphere feels remarkably tranquil despite being situated in the heart of bustling Tsim Sha Tsui. Afternoon Tea featured a refined selection of pastries, cakes, savory canapés, and premium teas. During our visit, I particularly enjoyed the raisin scone, chocolate delight cake, crab roll, and a pot of English Breakfast Tea. Evening cocktails featured a mini buffet offering charcuterie, cheeses, hot and cold canapés, salads, and desserts, alongside an extensive beverage selection including champagne, wines, cocktails, beers, mocktails, and other non-alcoholic options. Club Regent ultimately became one of the strongest highlights of the stay. In my opinion, it stands among the finest Club InterContinental-style lounge experiences I have encountered within the IHG portfolio. 2 Twin Classic Harbour View Room Room 1018 represented one of the highest-category Twin Bed Harbour View rooms available at the property. Measuring approximately 38 square meters, the room featured a comfortable bedroom layout, spacious bathroom, functional closet space, and breathtaking panoramic views overlooking Victoria Harbour. The bedroom included two single beds, bedside tables, a marble-topped minibar cabinet, coffee and tea amenities, multiple power outlets, a small dining table, a leather chair, and a large Samsung flatscreen television. Soft beam lighting, textured carpets, and wood paneling contributed to the room’s intentionally minimalistic aesthetic. Perhaps the most thoughtful design element was the elegant metal tree sculpture positioned outside the large harbour-facing window, adding a unique artistic dimension to the already spectacular skyline views. This did not feel like an ordinary hotel room — it unmistakably felt like a Regent Room. One feature noticeably absent, however, was a Bluetooth speaker, which would have paired beautifully with the room’s atmosphere and emphasis on a self-curated musical ambience. I was eventually told there was by request, which might give this hotel an opportunity to have an amenity on request menu. The bathroom featured a deep soaking bathtub, marble finishes, a rainfall shower, a separate toilet cubicle, and a dual-sink vanity. Regent-branded bathrobes and Perricone MD bath products were also provided. The closet space offered generous storage capacity and included slippers, a shoe horn, and other practical conveniences expected from a luxury property. During evening turndown service, additional mineral water and sleeping eye masks were thoughtfully provided. Uncharacteristic Housekeeping Issues Unfortunately, housekeeping became one of the most disappointing aspects of the stay. Upon further inspection of the room, I noticed multiple areas that appeared insufficiently cleaned, including visible hair strands on the carpet, bathroom floor, and table surfaces. Most concerning, however, was discovering visible urine stains inside the toilet upon arrival. At a property operating at this level of luxury pricing and reputation, these are simply issues that should never occur. To the hotel’s credit, Assistant Front Office Manager Amy You handled the situation graciously and professionally once informed. She kindly arranged for the room to undergo a deep cleaning and also extended a fruit plate as an additional gesture of hospitality. Her professionalism was genuinely appreciated. Air Conditioning, Shower Pressure & Soundproofing Concerns The room’s air conditioning system proved surprisingly difficult to operate comfortably throughout the stay. The thermostat lacked clear instructions, and despite setting the room to 24°C with medium fan speed, the ventilation remained inconsistent overnight, leaving the room feeling unusually warm and poorly circulated. While the water temperature controls functioned properly, the rainfall shower pressure itself felt unexpectedly weak, especially compared to both average residential standards and nearby luxury competitors such as the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong. Soundproofing also appeared noticeably weaker than expected for a luxury harbourfront hotel. At approximately midnight, a significant outdoor noise disturbance involving loud music and amplified sound from the surrounding harbourfront area became clearly audible inside the room. Combined with occasional boat engine noise from Victoria Harbour, the interruptions made sleep noticeably difficult and repeatedly disrupted the overnight experience. While the outdoor environment itself is naturally beyond the hotel’s direct control, stronger acoustic insulation would have significantly improved comfort and rest quality. Given the hotel’s vibrant waterfront location, it may also have been thoughtful to proactively provide complimentary earplugs within the room for light sleepers. My Overall Thoughts on the Room From a design perspective, the room itself is genuinely stunning. The views overlooking Victoria Harbour are absolutely world-class, and Regent’s minimalist design philosophy successfully creates an atmosphere that feels distinctive and memorable. This does not feel like an ordinary hotel room — it unmistakably feels like a Regent Room. Under normal circumstances, I would absolutely say the upgraded Harbour View room experience justifies the nearly HKD $6,000 nightly market pricing that rooms in this category can often command, along with the substantial number of IHG points typically required for redemption. However, the major caveat is that luxury pricing alone cannot excuse shortcomings in the most basic operational standards. Regardless of how visually beautiful the room may be, issues involving cleanliness, maintenance, ventilation, and soundproofing inevitably diminish the overall experience. Dinner Buffet at Harbourside One of the undeniable highlights of the stay was experiencing Harbourside’s famous dinner buffet service. Located on the ground floor overlooking the Avenue of Stars, Harbourside is beautifully designed with elegant dining tables, expansive buffet stations, greenery, and warm ambient lighting. The Saturday Night Dinner Buffet was priced at HKD $998 (USD $128) per person before the 10% service charge, with Diamond Elite members receiving a 15% dining discount. Note that the buffet admission price will increase soon. The buffet focuses heavily on freshness, ingredient quality, and presentation, with particularly strong emphasis placed on seafood, roasted meats, and desserts. During dinner, I sampled chilled seafood, sashimi, roasted striploin, roasted lamb, Peking duck, boiled live lobster, barramundi, and house-made ice cream. The experience also included coffee and tea service alongside a complimentary welcome drink for in-house guests. Overall, I believe Harbourside fully lives up to its reputation and remains one of the finest buffet dining experiences in Hong Kong. Other Dining Venues In addition to Harbourside, the Regent Hong Kong offers an impressive collection of dining venues including The Steak House, the Cantonese fine dining restaurant Lai Ching Heen, the internationally acclaimed Japanese restaurant Nobu, Qura Bar, and the iconic Lobby Lounge. Club Regent Breakfast Following a somewhat uneasy night due to the ventilation difficulties and midnight noise disturbance, we returned to Club Regent for breakfast. The breakfast service combines both buffet offerings and à la carte selections, with elevated dishes such as Abalone & Ham Macaroni Soup, Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, and Hainan Chicken Congee available to order. The buffet itself featured a broad selection of Western, Japanese, and Chinese breakfast items alongside pastries, fresh fruit, and juices. During breakfast, I enjoyed macaroni soup, scrambled eggs, smoked turkey sausage, bacon, hash browns, orange juice, and Chinese green tea. Conclusion We departed the hotel at our allotted late check-out time of 2 PM, making sure all of the feedback above had been respectfully communicated to Assistant Regent Experience Manager Himmy Chan. Just like Amy, Himmy was very kind in receiving the additional feedback I had regarding the overnight problems. To his credit, the Hong Kong native ensured that Senior Management was made aware of the situation and that the engineering team would investigate why the water pressure, soundproofing, and air conditioning fell below expectations. During check-out, Himmy generously gifted me a Regent Hong Kong leather travel bag. So, was the stay ultimately worth the years spent waiting since the Regent Hong Kong’s reopening, accumulating points, and finding the right opportunity to finally experience this legendary property? Not in the current state in which I experienced it — but absolutely yes once the hotel further refines and improves its operational consistency. There is unquestionably something special about this hotel. The Victoria Harbour views are among the most spectacular I have ever experienced from a hotel room. Club Regent stands as one of the finest lounge experiences I have encountered within IHG’s luxury portfolio. Harbourside delivered a truly memorable buffet experience, and Chi Wing Lo’s redesign successfully revived the Regent identity into something elegant, modern, and emotionally atmospheric. At many moments throughout the stay, I genuinely understood why the Regent Hong Kong carries such an extraordinary reputation. When guests pay Regent-level pricing, they naturally expect Regent-level standards. Room 1018 delivered the beauty, atmosphere, and prestige associated with the Regent name. Unfortunately, the team still faced challenges in consistently delivering the operational refinement necessary to fully justify it. Aftermath & Service Recovery After returning to Mainland China, I decided to spend some time writing an email to Hotel Manager Rick Lai to constructively raise the issues I experienced. To his credit, he carefully reviewed my entire case and ensured that my hotel experience did not end in disappointment. Rick went above and beyond in making sure I would have another opportunity to return and experience what the hotel believes every guest should witness: a true Regent Hong Kong stay. Thank you, Rick. Final Thoughts The Regent Hong Kong is not a bad hotel. In fact, it may very well be one of the most visually stunning and potentially exceptional hotels in the entire city. Regent, as a luxury hospitality brand, is ultimately defined not only by design and scenery, but also by consistency, execution, and attention to the smallest details. This is especially important given that the room itself ultimately serves as the centerpiece of the guest experience. On the bright side, the service and people at the Regent were genuinely memorable. The food remains the hotel’s true signature calling card. Most importantly, the views continue to be an iconic, picturesque dream brought to life. There is certainly no reason for anyone to avoid this remarkable property. I hope Managing Director Michel Chertouh and his team continue guiding this hotel toward what they have envisioned for the Regent brand in Hong Kong: A pursuit of perfection — and a genuine fight to earn the titles of “Best Hotel in Hong Kong,” “Best Hotel in Asia,” and perhaps even “Best Hotel in the World.”

제이슨 웡 덕분에 정말 멋진 시간을 보냈습니다. Even though we arrived late at night, they still welcomed us with great kindness and hospitality.

Most Amazing Hotel EVER!!!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!The location is sooooo good--at my room, I can see nearly the whole Victoria Dockside! I luv the view:) I got experience the Regent Club as part of my room service, and that was incredible: the food was brilliant (there was Chinese, Western and Japanese cuisine, and all taste nice, although I personally love the Japanese set), and the staff greeted us with huge smiles everyday. There was a girl in particular (whose name is Grace--yeppie, I remembered!) who answered our requirements every time in a cheerful AND respectful manner, and did her best to meet it (which she did an excellent job at). The buffet was incredible too--I enjoyed at least 10 Peking duck rolls, and the Chinese restaurant was a hit--the 干炒牛河(stir-fried beef rice noodles) and the (好像有鱿鱼丝的)炒肠粉(pan-fried rice noodle rolls with maybe squid?) are my personal top two. Anyways, Regent HK has been my top hotel for HK (possibly my favorite in the world) and I've came here for like 5 times in 8 months. Guys, plz come here for the BEST TRAVEL EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!!!!!
