Our Anniversary Stay at Secrets Playa Blanca – Truly Exceptional

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

My wife and I spent a week at Secrets Playa Blanca for our wedding anniversary in July 2026, and it was nothing short of unforgettable. We’ve travelled often, but the level of care, friendliness, and attention we received here stands out as one of our most memorable experiences. From the moment we arrived, the staff—from management to every team member we encountered—made us feel welcome, pampered, and completely at ease. Their dedication to ensuring our stay was special truly went above and beyond. We have many people to thank: • Jorge (“Papa Ke”), Manager on Duty – who met us personally twice and made us feel genuinely welcomed. • Fernanda, Culinary Team – greeted us at every dinner restaurant and coordinated the most incredible anniversary dinner with Chef Javier at Bordeaux, making us feel truly celebrated. • Eduardo, our butler – exceeded every expectation. He kept us informed of daily events, arranged our turndown service, answered every question, and was always friendly and engaging. His surprise romantic bubble bath—complete with music and a fireplace screensaver—was unforgettable. • Ana – organized an amazing seafood platter prepared by the Chef at Market Café and was always warm, welcoming, and smiling. • Raoul, Antonio, Eyder, Alicia, Filiberto, Fernando – among the many wonderful servers who made every meal feel special. • Paola from Coco Café – kindly helped us find our way around the resort. • Janeth – made both our check in and check out seamless and welcoming. The resort itself is beautifully maintained and kept pristine. Our room was spacious, modern, and well equipped, with a fully stocked mini fridge and thoughtful housekeeping touches like flower petal decorations during turndown service. The beach sand is soft, and both the pool and ocean were refreshing—especially on hot sunny days. The only downside was the presence of sargassum seaweed on the beach and in the ocean. The staff worked diligently every day to clear it, but it’s simply beyond their control and did not take away from our overall experience. There are plenty of daily activities and nightly shows to enjoy. We loved relaxing under the palapas by the beach or unwinding at the infinity pool next to the Preferred Club lounge. The food was outstanding, with a great variety of restaurants—we visited and enjoyed all of them. Every day offered delicious options, and I particularly loved the non alcoholic drinks of the day, like Fantasy, Barbuja, and Dunas. Coco Café, open 24/7, was a treat with its desserts, ice cream, sandwiches, and specialty teas and coffees. Thank you, Secrets Playa Blanca, for making our anniversary truly special. We left with wonderful memories and deep appreciation for your incredible team.

Beautiful Beach, Beautiful Resort… But Not Quite Elevated

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

As someone who is both a World of Hyatt member and a travel advisor who has stayed at multiple Secrets properties over the years, I wanted to provide a detailed and balanced review for anyone researching this resort. I also know resort management reads these reviews, so my hope is that this feedback is constructive because I truly believe this property has the potential to become one of the best Secrets resorts in the portfolio. The resort itself is beautiful, the beach is outstanding, and there is certainly a lot to love. That said, there were several operational inconsistencies that prevented this from feeling like the elevated luxury experience we've come to expect from the Secrets brand. Arrival & Check-In ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Check-in was exactly what I expect from Secrets—efficient, friendly, and uncomplicated. We were initially assigned Building 9. While the room itself was perfectly nice, I politely asked whether an ocean-view room might become available. The following day the front desk happily accommodated our request and moved us to Building 5 on the fifth floor. The room change itself was handled easily, and I appreciated the willingness to accommodate our request. One thing I did notice that made me uncomfortable: after our luggage was transferred, someone had clearly gone through the interior of my suitcase. Nothing was missing and I always keep valuables with me, but as someone who is admittedly very organized, it was immediately apparent. I have no explanation for why this happened, but it is something I felt was worth mentioning. The Room ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ The rooms are beautiful. I really enjoyed the neutral colors, natural wood tones, and overall aesthetic. The design feels modern without being cold and fits the Playa Blanca setting very well. A couple of small details surprised me because they've become standard at other Secrets resorts: No room tablet for ordering services or viewing resort information. The minibar lacked some of the small snack options we've consistently had elsewhere (chips, peanuts, candy bars, etc.). These certainly aren't deal-breakers, but they're the little luxury touches that contribute to the overall Secrets experience. Housekeeping, however, was our biggest disappointment. On multiple occasions we specifically requested that our room be serviced. We were assured it would be taken care of immediately—including by our concierge—only to return several hours later and find nothing had been done. This happened more than once. By contrast, room service was consistently prompt whenever we ordered. The Beach ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is where Secrets Playa Blanca absolutely shines. The beach is expansive with incredibly soft sand, beautiful turquoise water, and plenty of room to spread out. Seaweed was managed well throughout our stay. One of the biggest advantages of this property is its proximity to Isla Mujeres. If you plan to do that excursion, the shorter boat ride compared to many Cancun resorts is definitely a plus. If I had one suggestion, it would be to capitalize on this incredible beachfront even more. There is so much space that additional seating areas or another beach bar concept could make this one of the most memorable beaches in the entire Secrets collection. Pools ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Each pool offered a different atmosphere. The main infinity-edge pool overlooking the beach was beautiful and had convenient bar service. The activities pool had a great energy, largely thanks to the entertainment staff. They did an excellent job creating a fun atmosphere without becoming overwhelming. The Jungle Pool offered a quieter escape and was probably the most relaxing area of the resort. However, I did have a few observations. First, I wish there had been more comfortable in-water seating. Unless you wanted to sit on the entry steps, there really wasn't a place to relax while partially submerged. Second, by early afternoon the water became surprisingly warm. During the hottest part of the day it wasn't nearly as refreshing as we had hoped. Finally, while the Jungle Pool cabanas are available to rent, many remained empty throughout the day. It felt like a missed opportunity. If unused after a certain time, allowing guests to use them on a first-come basis could really enhance that area. Restaurants & Dining ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ The food itself was very much what we've come to expect from Secrets. We generally enjoyed our meals and found the menus familiar and dependable. One experience at Portofino stood out. While waiting, a staff member told us we could be seated sooner because another couple had become sick—but only if we purchased a bottle of wine. Personally, I would have appreciated a more straightforward approach. Simply offering expedited seating with the purchase of a bottle would have felt more transparent. Throughout our stay, several restaurants also had lengthy wait times despite numerous visibly empty tables. My assumption is they may have been operating with limited staffing. Coco Café ⭐⭐⭐☆ This was honestly one of my biggest disappointments. The coffee itself was good. However, compared to other Secrets resorts we've visited, Coco Café felt extremely scaled back. The selection of snacks and desserts was minimal and lacked the variety we've become accustomed to throughout the brand. Fitness Center ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ We always make a point to visit the gym when traveling. The equipment itself was excellent. The only drawback was space. Compared to Secrets Moxché—which offers dedicated studios for cycling, Pilates, and stretching—this gym felt somewhat cramped. Grounds & Atmosphere ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The grounds were immaculate. Everything was beautifully maintained throughout our stay. The landscaping was lush, the architecture fit the natural surroundings, and there were iguanas everywhere, which we always enjoy seeing. While the overall layout isn't my favorite among Secrets resorts, there was never a question about the pride the grounds team takes in maintaining the property. Desires Nightclub Desires is actually a really nice venue once you find it. The problem is...it's easy to forget it's there. It feels tucked away from the main flow of the resort. Inside there's plenty of seating and it would be a fantastic gathering place for groups, but I think the location limits how much traffic it receives. Sales Presentations As expected, there were frequent invitations to attend UVC presentations. What made me laugh was that several representatives approached guests in plain clothes instead of resort uniforms. It wasn't bothersome—just something I found amusing. We were also asked several times throughout the stay to leave reviews. Personally, I don't mind that at all because reviews genuinely help future travelers make informed decisions. Illness During Our Stay Unfortunately, my husband became ill midway through our vacation. We never determined the exact cause, but based off of the input of others we largely believe it to be the result of contaminated fruit poolside. I have noticed other guests mentioning similar experiences in recent reviews and Facebook discussions, so I felt it would be dishonest not to acknowledge our experience as well. While it significantly changed the final few days of our vacation (we had to cancel an excursion last minute which resulted in no refund and no rescheduling - extremely upsetting). Very unfortunate timing. Others have also experienced this. I suggest coming prepared and know that your concierge can assist with illness related remedies. Final Thoughts Would I recommend Secrets Playa Blanca? Yes. Would I return? Probably not. That may sound contradictory, but I think both statements can be true. If this is your first Secrets resort, I think you'll likely have a wonderful vacation. If you've experienced some of the brand's flagship properties, you may notice several missing touches and service inconsistencies that prevent Playa Blanca from feeling like a true luxury standout. That said, this resort has tremendous potential. The incredible beach, beautiful architecture, excellent grounds, and ideal location provide an amazing foundation. With more consistent housekeeping, a stronger Coco Café experience, better restaurant staffing, and a few thoughtful improvements to the pool areas, I genuinely believe Secrets Playa Blanca could become one of the best Secrets resorts in the Hyatt Inclusive Collection. Overall Rating: 4/5

In a World of Pay More Get Less, Secrets Playa Blanca Ups Its Game

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 20 hours ago

We enjoyed a 7-night stay at Secrets Playa Blanca in mid July 2026, completing our third visit to the resort. Though we've always been impressed with the resort's layout, physical beauty, room quality, the serenity of the Jungle Pool and low-key vibes of the Preferred Club pool, we felt at this third visit the resort has dramatically improved food quality in all its restaurants and that the staff, from management down, does a consistently exceptional job making guests feel welcome, pampered, at ease, and at home. Guest needs and preferences are quickly learned and anticipated, staff at all levels are friendly and accommodating, and the property is kept pristine, both in housekeeping of guest rooms and cleanliness of public spaces. This is a resort oriented towards sophistication, refinement, and elegance and definitely does not cater to partiers, rather to patrons looking to relax in a gorgeous tropical setting. (The Activity Pool, the rowdiest of the pools, is the proper venue for those looking for a more lively experience but is by no means going to satisfy those who seek the ear-splitting, booze-numbing excess found at resorts elsewhere. And for those who find even that level of exuberance too much, the Seaside restaurant strategically separates the Preferred Pool from the Activity Pool, creating both a visual and sonic barrier between the two. For this reason alone, this introvert views the extra charge for Preferred Club rooms to be worthwhile. The made-to-order breakfasts at Seaside available only to Preferred Club guests seals this deal.) Some observations: Entertainment is eclectic, so while a given guest may not be a fan of every offering, there is something daily in one venue or another that will appeal to most tastes. The beach is kept clean of sargassum to the extent humanly possible and benefits from the barrier effect of Isla Mujeres several miles to the east in this regard. The beach sand is soft and deep, and there are loungers, some under palapas, on the beach. All the pools now offer padded loungers, a great improvement in comfort whatever your pool of choice might be, though I think the ones at the Preferred Club are the most cushioned.

10/10 recommend

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 20 hours ago

The resort was fantastic. We arrived late due to our flight, and we were still able to make the tequila tasting we had booked with the sommelier, Karin. That set the entire tone for the 4 days that we stayed. The tasting was fantastic. Karin was so knowledgeable, the tequila was delicious and the food that they paired it with was top notch (some type of salad that we kept asking for the whole time we were there, rack of lamb and mashed potatoes, seabass, and the desserts). The entire experience went above anyone’s expectations. We loved the sommelier, Karin, so much that we booked a wine tasting event too while we were there. He also helped us get dinners with wine pairings, and he had booked rooms in the wine cellar at Portofino and the tequila cellar in El Patio when we wanted to go to those restaurants. If there is anyone at that resort that you must meet, it is him. Those experiences enhanced my friends’ and I’s trip. Other standouts were seaside grill for breakfast. The fruit plate and eggs Benedict were great. My friends loved the French toast as well. The entertainment staff was excellent. So many activities to do every day. The social pool was so fun during the day (highly recommend getting a cabana.) and the infinity pool is gorgeous. We were preferred members but rarely stayed at that pool. Get the tacos by the pool. They are so good. And the Caesar salad we ordered was delicious. The night life was great. The rendezvous bar always had live music and the bartender, Jesus, made the best drinks. The rooms were really nice. Everything was clean. The only think I didn’t love was the lack of privacy. I went with friends so we could have used a little more in the bathroom area. Our butler, Diego, helped with anything our room needed. He was great. Overall the experience was fantastic. We had the time of our lives and would go back in a heartbeat. It’s beautiful, the staff is amazing, the beach is pristine and the spa was excellent (highly recommend the deep tissue massage)

Great food, beautiful rooms and beautiful resort!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 21 hours ago

We had a wonderful stay at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres! The resort itself is beautiful, the rooms were lovely, and the food exceeded our expectations. Every meal we had was delicious, with plenty of options to choose from. A special shout-out to our butlers, Diego and Lois! They were incredibly attentive, friendly, and always went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. Their exceptional service truly made our stay even more enjoyable. The only reasons I couldn’t give 5 stars were the entertainment and the chair situation. We found the nightly entertainment to be a bit underwhelming compared to other resorts we’ve visited. Also, the “chair game” was real—if you wanted a beachfront chair or a spot at the Jungle Pool, you had to claim one very early in the morning, which wasn’t ideal for a relaxing vacation. Overall, we had a fantastic trip and would absolutely consider returning, especially because of the outstanding service and amazing food. Thank you, Diego and Lois, for helping make our anniversary getaway so memorable!
