An oasis in the historic walled city of Jaipur, Samode Haveli is a traditional Indian mansion set in a glorious garden with apartments arranged around a series of courtyards. Built 175 years ago as a residence of the rulers of Samode, it is still occupied by their descendants, who have converted their home into a luxury hotel. Bedrooms are hidden all about the rambling building and are astonishingly decorative, covered in twinkling mirror work, with ornate paintings, tiny alcoves and soaring arches. Rooms have large beds and most have private terraces. The restaurant features a spectacular hand-painted dining hall which provides a special setting for dinner, and offers a choice of Indian food or delicious Asian and European meals. Guests can also take advantage of the hotel's spa, with sauna and steam room facilities, and a range of luxurious massage therapies offered by expert professionals.

This is a spectacularly beautiful hotel with lovely rooms, wonderful architecture, and a great pool. The dinner and breakfast was at the top end amongst several excellent hotels I stayed at in India. I noticed during my travels that some hotels were very relaxed and friendly without a trace of self-importance, while others had a self consciousness as if you were to feel privileged for being there. This hotel was in the second category. They pointed out on arrival, and in a written notice in the rooms, that tips were to be handed in to reception, not given to individuals (this is on top of the automatic service charge for drinks and meals). This is, however, a minor complaint. The staff were helpful and friendly and I thoroughly enjoyed pretty well every aspect of my stay. The gym is small but well equipped. It has a/c which is switched off until you turn it on, which meant it was stiflingly hot. But given that I was the only one in the gym, I don't begrudge the saving of energy. The restaurant and rooms were perfectly cool and comfortable.

As you enter through the gate, from the madness that is Jaipur, you are aware that this is an oasis of calm in a noisy vibrant city. We booked a Haveli Suite - it was comfortable but in the modern wing, so lacked the character we had hoped for and expected. The gardens are well tended and the courtyard area great for a drink when returning to the hotel after sightseeing. The pool is a great asset for a cooling swim and relaxation time. Don't miss the lovely rooftop bar for sunset and to watch the kites flying. The breakfast buffet offered something for everyone and dinner in the evening on the terrace was an enjoyable experience, offering local and international dishes.

Very attentive staff. We were upgraded to a spectacular suite. The staff throughout the entire hotel were extremely attentive even opening up the gym and sauna at 4.30am. Breakfast, dinner and cocktails were all fabulous
