Reviews for Playa Vik Jose Ignacio

Cheers to the Three Viks

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We stayed at Playa Vik for 3 nights just as the summer season was opening in early/ mid December, an easy and fun hire car drive from Montevideo. The weather was just settling and Jose Ignacio was still moderately quiet; apparently from Christmas through January it's absolutely rammed. We absolutely loved our stay in a superior first floor suite that was huge and had superb views over the beautiful infinity pool and huge sandy crescent beach. We found the staff friendly and excellent; we contacted the concierge before our stay to book activities and make reservations at the best local restaurants, which were all busy. The three VIKs are a very impressive offering and combination which were unknown to us until recommended by our agent, Wimeya Private Travel. Playa is excellent to stay, smaller and a little more boutiquey than Bahia which is 15 minutes walk along the beach. Bahia is spectacular, larger and lively with a superbly located, hugely popular beach restaurant, La Susana. A real gem is Estancia Vik, 20 minutes drive away, where we had a great day being shown round the House by the lovely Gaucho Manager, the stables and the horses and kayaking on the water. Staying here would be a lovely combo/contrast with Playa. All in all, a wonderful stay in a location that's hugely popular, but little known /frequented by Brits; if you have a car don't miss short drives to the Lagoon and to the village of Pueblo Garzon

Architecture and minimal are not all

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 weeks ago

When rating a hotel, price must be taken into account. At Baya Vik, the cost is extremely high, and therefore one reasonably expects top-level hospitality and service. Unfortunately, this was not our experience. The property itself is visually striking, with an impressive minimalist design and beautiful views of the ocean and beaches. However, only some rooms actually enjoy a good view; others are poorly positioned. The rooms are almost entirely glass, not all windows were properly cleaned, and privacy is limited. Rooms are not insulated!!! Amenities in both the room and bathroom are very basic, especially considering the price. Even finding light switches is not intuitive. In case of rain, guests need umbrellas just to reach the reception, restaurant, or pool, which quickly becomes inconvenient. Service is consistently very slow. There is no phone in the room, and communication relies on a confusing and poorly explained WhatsApp system. The restaurant is also below expectations in terms of food, service, and overall experience. Overall, there are much better accommodation options in José Ignacio offering higher standards at a far more reasonable price.

My favorite hotel in my own country

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 10 months ago

Im uruguayan and I stayed over at playa vik with a friend for one night at the end of march. We were already in punta del este and when I told my friend about this place, we decided on the spot to stay there on Sunday, instead of leaving for Montevideo. The day was perfect for march and we swam on the pool all day, watched the sunset and it was perfect, and at night swimming with the star like lights is truly a dream! I believe the pool was slightly heated because it was never cold, considering it was Fall already. Our room was amazing, it was called zen, had two twin beds, a private garden and a sea view, even though it was garden view, you could still see the ocean. We brought a bottle of wine and the hotel bar they were very kind to keep it chilled and pour us our wine. We spent all day at the pool and never left the hotel. After the pool closed we went over to the bonfire to end the day, it was truly magical. I’ve always dreamed of staying at this hotel and I couldn’t believe how magical the whole experience was. I hope to stay there again. We also shared a couple of drinks and a dessert at the pool. On the next day, breakfast was soooo good! I had to take on a meeting and I did it over the common area since it was raining outside. Thanks to ale from the bar, very nice to us with his recommendations!

One of the most incredible restaurants in the world!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed January 28, 2025

We’ve had an amazing experience at CieloMar restaurant, at Play Vik hotel. Food is gorgeous, the views are incredible, and the architecture is out of this world! Prices are reasonable and according to their service and quality. We’ll certainly be back! ♥️

Very mixed

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed October 17, 2023

I have very mixed feelings about this place. The good : Great location, Futuristic design of hotel with attention to detail in furniture etc Spacious suites with floor to ceiling windows, Right on the beach, Infinity pool with exceptional sunsets over it, Staff members work hard and try to meet your needs. The bad: Limited staff means important areas like reception are often left unattended. There is refurbishment works as soon as you walk in so access to main building is tricker and also it’s not aesthetically pleasing to constantly see the construction. In our 1,000$ a night suite, the aircon didn’t work and the heating couldn’t be switched off so it got to the point that we were sweating in a 28 degree room and had to stay in the room with the front door open to let air in. The second night our blackout blinds were disabled by the staff without anyone informing us. They tried to get them to work but unsuccessfully and I asked how we are meant to sleep without them and the reply was « oh it’s ok, the sun doesn’t come up until 8am ». I thought that was a strange reply so I looked and the sunrise time was just before 6. And even if it WERE two hours later, for guests who are paying 1,000 a night, there should be no excuse for not being able to close the blinds. In the end, they found a room next door (with working blinds and a working aircon) which we moved into for the last night. The gym has very old rusty equipment which needs changing asap. Details in the rooms and hotel itself need some TLC- scuffing/ peeling paint/ dirty windows… just general neglect. Food was not great. Especially breakfast which only had toasted bread at the « buffet » and the only thing you can request from the kitchen is eggs. For the price you are paying, a full menu would be nice. Also « cacio and Pepe pasta » is NOT plain pasta with a side of parmesan… Overall, the hotel is gorgeous and location is stunning but I really wish the owners/ management would be more present to make it feel less neglected. I’ve put photos of both the good and the bad.
