Key West is a romantic destination with hints of nostalgia. Images of Ernest Hemingway hunched over a typewriter come to mind as well as black-and-white frames of Bogie and Bacall. Heron House, a AAA Four-Diamond Award inn, is another quintessential element of the Florida Keys. Originally built between 1856 and 1860, the hideaway recaptures the southern charm and genteel way of life. There are 23 elegantly crafted rooms and suites, with no two alike, offering a tapestry of tropical appointments. Hunker down in a bed made of rattan cloaked in colorful fabrics, with granite-trimmed bathrooms and original watercolor paintings. Some rooms feature stained-glass transom windows, wooden walls crafted by skilled artisans, or private decks and balconies festooned with leafy plants.

Adorable place. Very cozy and everyone made us feel welcome, Jay the owner is a true delight. Our room and accommodations were perfect. Mary the cat is an added bonus as we love pets! 90 second walk to duval street. A must stay!

Nice, quiet location. We stayed in king suite off of the pool area which was very convenient when sitting at the pool. The room and bathroom were large. Nice marble tile floors. The mattress was comfortable, however the sheets, bedspread, and flat pillows are old, thin, faded, and need to be replaced. The pool area was nice, with areas of sun and shade. The breakfast buffet was limited but sufficient and was set up in a small and unattractive room. Coffee was delicious but not available until 7:30am.

This was our second visit to this property. We previously selected this property because of its atmosphere, setting and convenient location just two blocks from Duval - just far enough out of the hustle and bustle, but close enough for a leisurely walk - and location remains great The layout of the property is quaint and comfortable, the pool is inviting and the mix of indoor/outdoor space inviting. The property is geared to adults and that is due to the limited number of rooms and the intimate setting. However, companion took exception to the short sheeting of the bed, tired decor and an overall need for some re-investment - particularly when considering the daily rate. Staff was thoroughly accommodating and resolved the bedding issue, was friendly and helpful with all requests. This is a wonderful property that can use some brightening up to make it truly enjoyable - again.

We were in room 9 for 4 nights. As we checked in, I struggled to carry my suitcase up the narrow steps while the young clerk stood and watched. The room was nice with the following exceptions. The two sinks in the room had no pressure and to get warm water they had to run 15 minutes. We fetched our own clean towels at the front desk except for the last night. The soap dispensers in the shower were empty. One of the chairs on the deck broke apart when sat on. Told the clerk about it but nothing was done. Pool has 2 lounge chairs, the rest regular chairs. More lounge chairs up on the sundeck. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Had to warm everything in the toaster. The room was clean when we got there but basically no maid service until the last night. I expected more and will not return here.

Avoid at All Costs – One of the Worst Stays of My Life Rating: 0/5 I’m not a luxury traveler — I’ve stayed in plenty of basic accommodations, but this one crossed the line from “budget-friendly” to “completely unacceptable.” This small house/hotel in Key West was difficult to find, with no signage or check-in area. I received a handwritten note with my name on it taped to the door. No host, no welcome, no explanation. i called to ask where to park, a man pick up the phone drunk telling me this is not an emergency, it was for me! therefore i parked right on the front of the house. at 9am the owner came and tow my car! whem i asked him why, he said you should have ask, wich i did but the employee was drunk so..... The room was tiny, damp, and barely furnished. The bed was unstable, squeaky, and literally held up with an old book. The walls were moldy, the AC unit was ancient and smelled bad, and the only window didn’t open. The bathroom was awful: the shower sprayed everywhere but down, the faucet leaked, and the water temperature fluctuated wildly. I found a used bar of soap with hair on it and half a roll of toilet paper. Unacceptable. Bugs were everywhere — ants, roaches, and something scratching in the ceiling all night long. I didn’t sleep for three nights. When I tried to contact the owner, I got no response. This is not an “authentic” local experience — it’s a neglected, unclean, and frankly unsafe place that should be reported. I left early and booked a chain hotel just to feel normal again. Do not stay here, no matter how cheap or “quirky” it seems online.
