Located south of Bangkok in the "Land of Smiles," the picturesque island of Koh Samui is home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches, temperate rainforests, and stunning shorelines. With the addition of Banyan Tree Samui, Koh Samui is now home to the "Best New Beach Resort Hotel" as named by the elite Condé Nast Traveller Hot List 2011. The resort's breathtaking exterior rises above the shimmering Gulf of Thailand amidst cascading treetop terraces on an isolated hill cove. Banyan Tree Samui boasts an all villa-resort; each generously proportioned living space impressively combines aspects of traditional Thai-style architecture with modern planning and design, such as the steep, raised rooftops, striking floor-to-ceiling windows, and its own elevated, private pool. The beautiful, expansive grounds are surrounded by the lush, aromatic foliage of the region, making it the picture perfect backdrop for every celebration of life: birthdays, weddings, romantic getaways, and everything in between.

The resort has been operating for many years. I originally thought it would need renovation, but to my surprise, the villas were very well maintained. The villa was more spacious and cleaner than I had expected. The service was top-notch. Everyone we met was polite and provided excellent service. The beach was very enjoyable. They even provided cold water and chilled towels once we chose our lounge chairs. We could borrow stand-up paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, snorkeling gear, and water shoes free of charge at the beach. Special thanks to Jack from the Beachside Restaurant. We had a BBQ dinner there, and Jack spoke Chinese very well. He was incredibly attentive and catered to our special needs. With such outstanding staff, I would definitely want to stay at this resort again.

We stayed here recently for 8 nights. We had a Hill Crest Villa (H03) and it was probably the highest villa on the resort with a fantastic view. Its prob the furthest away from the lobby and breakfast area and takes about 4 mins to get their by buggy. Our Butler was Abby. So we have stayed in numerous Banyan Tree resorts from around the world, Mexico, Bali, Vietnam and now this one. They are all different in their own way but the commonality is the service, professionalism and the Villas. For views this is prob the one of the best ones we have been to..with Bali a close second. For Villa's, Bali and Mexico (Mayakoba) are much better. The villa is quite dated as many have said and they need attention. However everything works but could to with some improvement. For the best view ever, Raffles in the Seychelles tops all...;-)..just saying. The breakfast is superb and all the facilities are excellent. The Spa is very good and professional as you would expect. Saffron the onsite restaurant is well worth a visit. Its prob one of the best 'high-end' thai food we hand on our trip. Abby our butler was fantastic, very good at her job and always had a smile on her face. Nothing was to much trouble. If you have a butler use them. Now be aware of the following : The wine selection is poor and very expensive compared to going out of the resort. Head to Lamai beach or Fishermans Night Market and you will find lots of places where you can get something pretty decent for a fraction of the price. Just for comparison, we paid 5 times more for a bottle of sparkling wine at this resort which is available downtown (exact same bottle) . Not sure that's justified. Food options are limited in terms of variety but do go of the beach BBQ on a Sat which was very good. They have a fireshow which is quite entertaining as well. We only had one 2 evening meals at the hotel, the rest of the nights we grabbed a Bolt taxi and headed to town. I still gave this a 5 star rating as most of the stuff I knew about before I chose this place from other reviews. Its quite and a great location. Lots of food options around and about 25 mins from the airport. If you can get a Hill Crest Villa, do it!...you will not be disappointed.
