Beautiful Property and Spa, Great Staff, and Mediocre Food

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 9 hours ago

Overall, an excellent experience. Beautiful and scenic property and relaxing setting all around. What I enjoyed: The Spa - the facilities are renovated and feels new and clean. The pool floor (basement) is not spacious whatsoever, however the lounges were very nice and relaxing. We enjoyed all the amenities and pools. I very much enjoyed my massage (forgot the name of the therapist) . My family and friends also had a great time and fell asleep during their massages. This contrasted with my previous experience here two years ago when I was given a male massage therapist (without my prior knowledge/consent and the services was mediocre). This time I made sure I specified the gender of the therapist. What I wished happened is that the host would tell us that the instructions/order of what facilities to use first, second, etc.. (and how long to use it) was actually written on the back of the slip we received. I don't think anyone carries the paper slip into the spa, it is kept at the lockers. None of us realized they were written there, I think that could have enhanced the positive impacts to our bodies. Our experience at the Wisconsin room for breakfast was great too, we liked our waitress named Mary, she was so energetic and pleasant. The food was slow though but the quality of the pastries were good. What we did not enjoy - Blackwolf restaurant- ribeye steak for $60- they used a really reallly cheap cut of beef and was overcooked, we were really disappointed (and especially after Jim the bus driver really sold us on the quality of the food here. He is very pleasant btw. It's not so much that it is overpriced (I expect it to be overpriced), but such a cheap cut should not be sold here. We had dinner here two years ago too and everything we ordered was also mediocre at best. The only reason we chose to dine here is due to the views. Really awesome though the waitress kept us from selecting seats with better views for some reason, eventhough those seats were available throughout our time there. Next time we will not dine here but still walk around the area. We will try The Blind Horse which had excellent reviews. I actually cancelled my reservations there to come here. The Whistling Strait food was pretty good (we just ordered some salads and fish & chips) and the views also amazing. The Green Room could be much better. It had a lovely ambiance, but the quality of the drinks are disappointing. I did not enjoy the iced chocolate (supposed to be dark chocolate but tasted like the powder 'Milo' nor did we enjoy the matcha latte (Rishi sweet matcha), I would prefer they use stronger matcha and those of ceremonial quality. I personally consume Rishi Tea all the time but their sweet matcha is not of good quality, is cheap, and is too light on the matcha and too sweet. People that come here can afford better quality matcha. And their 'dark chocolate' could be replaced with dutch chocolate which has a rich dark chocolate taste while still keeping the cost low for the coffee shop. Lastly, the staff were mostly very nice, especially both concierge staff we talked to (the one working 8/30 evening and Quinn who works during the day) and the Asian lady at the Sport Core counter was so friendly. Overall, great facility but mediocre, below average overpriced food. Probably due to few or not existent competition!

Impeccable Grounds, Incredible Golf & Spa, Top-Notch Service

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 month ago

We had an incredible stay at The Carriage House at The American Club! From the moment we arrived, everything exceeded our expectations. The grounds were immaculate, and the flowers throughout the property were absolutely stunning. It was a beautiful backdrop for what turned out to be a very special birthday getaway. The staff was outstanding, with a special shoutout to our bellmen, Kevin and Alex, who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Every detail of our stay was thoughtfully considered. The housekeeping team was excellent, and the evening turndown service was a lovely, unexpected touch that made us feel truly pampered. Our room was gorgeous, with a bathroom that was both luxurious and beautifully designed. It was exactly what you’d expect from the Kohler name. The spa was so relaxing. From the saunas, steam rooms, cold plunge, pool, and hot tub, there are so many options of how to spend your day. Our massages were glorious. It was a great way to spend my birthday. And the golf… wow. We had the chance to play The Straits, The Baths, and Meadow Valleys, and each course offered a unique and memorable experience. Every round was perfectly maintained and absolutely unforgettable. We can’t wait to return. The American Club truly lives up to its world-class reputation. Kudos to the entire team for making this trip extra special.

The American Club Carriage House and Spa

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

I stayed at The Carriage House at The American Club which I highly advise if you have spa appointments. The spa is in The Carriage House so you can just put a robe and slippers on in your room (they are stocked in the room closet) and walk down to your appointments. Most Carriage House guests can be found in robes and slippers throughout the day. The hotel is Tutor style so it's dark inside - dark woods, dark carpets and dim lights, with fires in the fireplaces which lends to a relaxing atmosphere. My room was very comfortable. It was large with a separate water closet and huge tub/shower/sink room. The bathtub was AMAZING, with the best jets for massage. Room service and housekeeping did an excellent job. They spoiled me with Kohler Chocolates every day. The spa was light and bright and worth every penny. The spa registration desk is fabulous. The staff are so knowledgable and kind. They work hard to take great care of every guest. I had a manicure, body exfoliation, facial and massage over the course of 2 days. Each service was amazing but my favorite was the sea lime sigh body exfoliation. I highly recommend it! In between services, I used the spa for their saunas (they have 2 - one is infrared, the other is traditional), steam room/cold plunge, whirlpools (they have 2 - one is on the rooftop, the other is in the main spa area), ice cave, locker rooms (which have beautiful showers/bathrooms/amenities) and their cozy relaxation chez lounges. The spa cafe and spa store are both excellent. I also walked a few blocks to the "Sports Core" and took a fitness class. They have TONS of offerings for every type of exercise you can imagine. On my walk back after my workout, I stopped at The Shops at Woodlake and found the best little boutiques. My favorite was "The Nest" a kitchen/home shop. For dinner the first night, I ate at The Wisconsin Room and had the best 1/2 chicken I've ever eaten. It was fabulous!! I want the recipe. The next night, I ate at the Horse and Plow pub which was just ok. And I had a smoothie from The Greenhouse on my last morning. which is a cute coffee shop located in The American Club. The ambiance is very french and it's stocked with lots of deliciousness. The only thing The American Club could've done better is helping me book my stay. The employee who booked everything was polite and kind but didn't know enough about the restaurants, the workout classes or the spa to be helpful. She just read off of the website when I asked her questions and I was already reading the website. It would be great if Kohler had booking agents that knew exactly what to point people to. For instance, the pilates class she booked for me wasn't really pilates (even though the Sports Core had reformers and other traditional pilates equipment and I specifically asked for a traditional pilates class). She just didn't know enough about it to get me in the right class. And she wasn't very helpful with restaurants either. For the price I paid, I expected booking agents with lots of knowledge. But all in all, it didn't really matter. I had a fabulous, relaxing 2 night stay and I hope to return soon.

Think twice

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

Think twice before having an event here. We attended a wedding here. There were multiple events throughout the weekend that were on site at the resort. The American Club and sister venues do NOT accommodate dietary restrictions. While they may claim to accommodate, in reality they have no idea how to do this. We had to escalate food allergy requests to the general manager of the resort to be taken seriously, and even then, the venue messed up our allergy orders. Had we not been paying close attention to the food we were served, we would have had an allergic reaction as we were served food containing our allergens. To make matters worse, the venues decided it was necessary to keep the parents of the bride apprised of every mistake they were making DURING THE WEDDING EVENTS. Instead of dealing with us (the guests with the food allergies) and correcting the situation, the staff on multiple occasions interrupted the mother of the bride DURING the WEDDING RECEPTION to tell her that they accidentally served us our allergens. I have no idea why they were doing this other than to ruin the night for the mother of the bride. The mother of the bride could not fix the situation and then searched for us at the reception to apologize. We felt terrible that she was bothered with this during her daughter's wedding reception, especially since she could not fix the situation. We have been to a number of weddings at high-end resorts around the country, and I can say that this was the WORST experience we have had. Most high-end venues make accommodating dietary restrictions seamless; after all, many wedding guests have food allergies, celiac, diabetes, or other dietary restrictions or preferences. We were shocked that a "five-star" resort like Kohler would not be able to handle this. With regard to the rooms at the American Club, we were disappointed. The rooms are outdated and overpriced. The prices are perhaps reflective of the historical significance of the resort.

Wonderful Romantic Stay

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 7 months ago

We truly loved our stay at the Carriage House at the American Club. There is so much character and charm. We loved the service and all of the extra touches that really put it over the top. We enjoyed breakfast in the Wisconsin room, a drink and scrabble in the library, and our cozy room (with the fantastic tub and shower of course! And fantastic comfortable beds. Wonderful housekeeping!). We will be back!
