Excellent place for a Luxury Vacation

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 12 hours ago

We’re Indian American travelers on a multigenerational family trip of six, and we’ve traveled extensively around the world in some of the world’s best resorts. Kumarakom Lake Resort is an exceptional property and easily ranks among some of the excellent resorts we’ve experienced. The resort beautifully blends traditional Kerala architecture with refined luxury. From the warm welcome at reception to the food and amenities, everything felt authentic, welcoming, and impeccably managed. Kumarakom is a quiet town with limited activities outside the resort, but the property itself offers plenty to enjoy for a relaxing stay—houseboats, backwater cruises, and peaceful sunset rides. The Ayurvedic spa (Ayurmana) was a highlight. Dr. Awasthi was knowledgeable and attentive, helping us choose treatments tailored to our needs. We stayed in three Heritage Villas with private pools, which were immaculate, comfortable, and beautifully designed. The private pools were well-sized, and the private outdoor showers were a refreshing and memorable touch. The grounds are lush and serene, with stunning views throughout. Overall, Kumarakom Lake Resort provided a truly rejuvenating experience, and we would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a peaceful, high quality retreat in Kerala.

One of the most magical stays we’ve ever had — flawless in every way

We had an absolutely incredible stay at Kumarakom Lake Resort — truly one of those rare places where every single detail exceeds expectations. From the moment we arrived, the experience felt special. The setting itself is breathtaking, right on the backwaters, with lush greenery, traditional architecture, and a sense of calm that immediately makes you slow down. Service & Staff What really sets this resort apart is the people. Every member of the staff was warm, attentive, and genuinely caring without ever feeling intrusive. You can tell there is a strong culture of hospitality here — they anticipate your needs before you even ask. Traveling with a child, this made a huge difference for us. Ayurvedic Spa & Massages The spa experience was exceptional. The treatments were not just relaxing but felt deeply therapeutic. The therapists are highly skilled and take the time to personalize treatments based on your needs. The entire setting — from the oils to the ambiance — is authentic and calming. This wasn’t just a “hotel spa,” it felt like a true Ayurvedic wellness experience. Experiences (Pottery with Arun — a highlight!) One of the most memorable parts of our stay was the pottery class with Arun. He was absolutely wonderful — patient, engaging, and incredibly talented. It wasn’t just an activity; it felt like a cultural experience. He made it fun and interactive, and both adults and kids can genuinely enjoy it. This was a standout moment for us. Property & Atmosphere The villas and common areas are beautifully designed, blending traditional Kerala style with comfort and luxury. Walking through the property feels like being in a living museum, yet everything is maintained to a very high standard. Food The food was consistently excellent — fresh, flavorful, and with a great mix of local Kerala cuisine and international options. Every meal felt thoughtfully prepared. ⸻ Overall This is one of those rare places where everything comes together — location, service, experiences, and authenticity. It’s not just a hotel stay; it’s a full experience. We left feeling relaxed, recharged, and already planning our return. Highly, highly recommend. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A disappointment but not a disaster.

This was a difficult review to write. This resort is a very high quality facility, the location on the shore of the Kumarakom lake is simply beautiful and the upkeep of the grounds complements that. The resort facilities are excellent and I would pick out in particular the seafood restaurant. All over the site the staff are excellent, clearly well trained - reception, restaurant, housekeeping, gardeners, spa all a credit to the facility. So why has this review been difficult ? Well after much research on coastal and other lakeside resorts, in late Dec we booked a Duplex villa on the meandering pool section of the site. This provided a bedroom on the first floor and a living area on the ground - ideal for 5 days relaxation after 8 days of early morning birding in the Western Ghats. We received 3 confirmations of our booking including one 3 days before we arrived. Each email confirmed our room type as requested. We arrived at 8pm, checked in at reception and then taken to our room by a serene young receptionist. But not to a Meandering Pool duplex but to one of their Heritage villas. We expressed our amazement at this change but at 8.30pm what choice did we have but to accept this room. After discussions with the management the next morning it was revealed that work was being carried out on the Meandering pools section of the resort which was closed and had been since late January. Yet the resort had continued to confirm our original booking. Nothing was said in reception when we booked in and it was left to a young lady who showed us to our room to field our deep disappointment. That to us was unacceptably poor customer care even though they considered that our substituted room was an upgrade - a view we did not share. Their failure to inform us denied us the opportunity to cancel prior to arrival and book elsewhere to a resort and a room facility that more suited our wishes. Had we been in transit staying for perhaps just 1 or 2 nights we may have been more relaxed about the change but this was 5 days. We decided reluctantly to stay as we could not face the hassle of moving and effectively losing another day of relaxation. Later that day Rahul the manager informed us that he had escalated the issue to his senior managers and as a result of our intervention all customers who had booked accommodation on the Meandering Pool section of the resort would now be informed of the change. He also offered us a complimentary visit to the spa which we accepted. Kumarakom is part of the Paul Resorts and Hotels group, a top of the range group of luxury boutique facilities. it still amazes us that they failed in this pretty basic aspect of customer care. Despite this setback we did our best to put it behind us and had a very enjoyable stay.

Five star luxury in typical Kerala hospitality!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

The houseboat was very comfortable with ac in the bedroom & dining area and the rest was open and breezy. Experience the outdoors with limited WiFi while sailing. But good when docked should you need it. The double decker was well worth the additional price. The open upper deck was outstanding. The staff from reception to boat to breakfast were excellent - hospitable, polite, warm & friendly. We will most certainly be back! Thank you for an amazing stay.
