Reviews for Aman Kyoto

Sublime but Uneven

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

Extraordinary Setting, But Uneven Five-Star Execution Aman Kyoto is one of the most beautiful hotel properties I have ever experienced. The exquisitely manicured gardens, forested setting, architecture and profound quiet are exceptional. Yet despite its extraordinary physical setting, inconsistent service, a difficult-to-justify room-pricing structure and a limited wellness offering mean that the overall experience did not consistently feel five-star. The Property and Rooms With fewer than 30 rooms across a vast, beautifully maintained garden estate, Aman Kyoto offers an exceptional amount of space, privacy and tranquillity per guest. The grounds are unquestionably the highlight: every stone path, moss-covered surface, mature tree and carefully composed garden view feels considered. The property is immersive, serene and unlike almost any other hotel in Kyoto. The rooms are equally impressive. All are beautifully designed, deeply quiet and connected to the landscape, whether on an upper or lower floor. The pavilions are only two storeys, but each feels private and provides a lovely view. The design, materials and sense of calm are exactly what one hopes for from Aman. However, the room-category pricing is seriously difficult to understand. Three room types are priced very differently per night, yet the layouts, amenities and overall quality appear essentially identical. The main distinction is simply their location and slightly different views across the property. While a premium for positioning is understandable, paying more than $1,000 extra per night for the highest category feels disproportionate when the actual room experience is largely the same. At this price level, there should be a more tangible difference in size, amenities, inclusions or service. A Standout Tea Ceremony The matcha ceremony was one of the stay’s true highlights. It was led by an extraordinary tea practitioner from north of Kyoto, apparently the only person offering this particular experience on the property. She had the poise of a modern-day imperial princess: elegant, composed and unmistakably individual. Her striking presence and sense of style felt almost like something from an old Milanese couture house. Her extensive time in Italy added an unexpected cosmopolitan dimension to the experience, creating a beautiful connection between Japanese ritual, craft, style and the long history of cultural exchange across East and West. The ceremony itself was exquisite—intimate, graceful and genuinely memorable. It was exactly the sort of highly personal, place-specific experience that Aman Kyoto should offer more of. This level of cultural programming gave the property real depth and showed what the guest experience can be when it is thoughtfully conceived and properly delivered. Wellness Needs Improvement The wellness offering is where Aman Kyoto most needs to raise its game. The indoor and outdoor onsen were pleasant, but the facility felt extremely limited for a hotel at this level. There was no sauna, steam room, cold plunge, experiential shower or even a proper changing-and-recovery environment. In effect, it was simply two baths. That may be an intentional minimalist position, but it does not feel sufficiently complete for a luxury hotel positioning itself around wellbeing, nature and restoration. The gym arrangement was particularly frustrating. To work out, guests have to travel to another off-site gym facility, coordinate a transfer, register at the second hotel, reserve a time slot and state how long they expect to exercise. Something that should be effortless—waking up, putting on gym clothes and going for a workout—becomes a logistical exercise. A discreet but fully equipped on-property gym would make a meaningful difference. Yoga was similarly inconsistent. We were told that yoga mats and blocks would be available in the room and that yoga could be practised throughout the property. When we wanted to do yoga, there were no mats in the room and we had to request them. This is a minor operational detail, but at Aman, details are the experience. There was also a bear on the property during our stay. Being in a forest, this is understandable and not inherently alarming. However, the response was to keep guests confined to their rooms while the situation was resolved. This meant being unable to access the gardens, outdoor pavilions, meditation areas and spaces that form the entire reason for staying at the hotel. Safety must come first, of course, but the response felt overly restrictive and poorly considered. When outdoor access is suspended, the hotel needs a better contingency plan: in-room wellness, guided activities, private cultural experiences or other programming that keeps guests engaged rather than simply bored in their rooms. Aman Kyoto is intentionally secluded and self-contained. If the hotel discourages guests from leaving the property, it should provide a richer and more dependable daily programme, especially when access to the gardens is restricted. Service and Transparency The staff were warm and polished, but service was inconsistent. At happy hour on the first day, unlimited champagne was offered from 4pm to 6pm, and we enjoyed several glasses each without issue. The following day, it took more than an hour to receive a second glass. At a hotel this small, where the staff-to-guest ratio should allow for highly attentive service, that inconsistency is difficult to overlook. The omakase dinner also lacked sufficient price transparency. We were not told the price beforehand and were left unclear about what was included, whether drinks or sparkling water were charged separately, and ultimately what the final cost represented. A chef-led tasting menu can be wonderful, but it should never leave guests uncertain about the financial commitment. Final Thoughts Aman Kyoto is a spectacular property with perhaps the most remarkable hotel gardens I have ever encountered. Its architecture, silence, spaciousness and rooms are genuinely special. The matcha ceremony was also exceptional and demonstrated the potential for the hotel to deliver cultural experiences of real depth and refinement. However, the property needs more consistent service, clearer pricing, a more complete wellness offering, an easier gym solution and better programming when guests cannot fully enjoy the grounds. At these rates, beauty alone is not enough. The operational experience must be as refined as the setting.

The quiet magic for Aman Kyoto

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Tucked away within a century-old garden, Aman Kyoto feels less like a hotel and more like a place that gently slows you down. There is something incredibly special about waking up surrounded by ancient trees, moss-covered pathways, and a stillness that is increasingly rare to find. What made our stay truly unforgettable, however, was the people. Every interaction felt warm and genuine. From remembering our names to anticipating the smallest details, the team made us feel cared for in a way that was both thoughtful and effortless. Aman Kyoto wasn’t just where we stayed—it became a meaningful part of our Kyoto story, and one of the places we’ll remember long after this journey comes to an end.

An Exceptional Stay That Captures the Essence of Kyoto

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 months ago

Aman Kyoto is set on a remarkably valuable and expansive piece of land, surrounded by beautiful gardens that create a true sense of serenity. The architectural design is exceptionally well aligned with Japanese culture and aesthetics. Aman’s signature minimalism allows you to experience Kyoto in a more authentic and local way, making the entire stay even more enjoyable. The rooms were excellent, and the location within the property felt very special. One of the highlights was the spa, particularly the outdoor hot spring, which was absolutely wonderful. Aman Kyoto is a truly distinctive hotel with its own character and atmosphere, and it is definitely worth staying at.

Not worth the money

I’m giving the two stars for the location, the views and cleanliness. We booked the hotel for 2 nights, they told us we have dinners included - two options: Japanese or European. We of course wanted the Japanese. 10 mins later we found out it’s fully booked. May be then you need to let people know before they come for only 2 nights and book it ahead of time. Also hotel cars were fully booked too. These arrangements could have been made in advance. I mean paying over 3k a night you expect a certain level of service. No one here wants to go out of their way to make you feel like every penny you spent is worth it. We didn’t like the hotels service so we decided to go back to Tokyo next day. Of course we knew we wouldn’t get refunded for the second night, didn’t even ask for it. we booked a car for a full day to go sightseeing not knowing we will want to go back on that same day. When we made the decision to leave we asked about to change the car reservation from 7 hours to 4. They said it was too late at night so they would try in the morning. At the checkout we found out we are still paying for the full 7 hours. No cancellation policy they said. Customer service on this lever sometimes means you need to go around your policies for the customer to want to come back. People who can afford hotels like that don’t care about the money, they care about the way they feel spending that money. If they don’t feel good, they don’t come back. We certainly won’t. Everyone smiles and politely tells you they can’t help you with anything

Superb stay at a luxurious oasis with unmatched service in the most serene, secluded environment!

Having stayed at Aman Tokyo(and being OBSESSED with it!), we decided to try Aman Kyoto this trip to Japan rather than the 4 Seasons and we are so glad we did! At the tail end of the autumn season, fall colors welcomed us we came to this idyllic haven away from the bustling chaos of central Kyoto. For many this may not be acceptable but we were perfectly thrilled to be staying away from the busy areas. Rooms are quiet with beautiful view of the forest. Soothing Japanese style of immaculate rooms that mimic ryokans. But all rooms have all modern conveniences like power shades,USB wall chargers, wonderful light controls,Toto toilets, mini fridge with complimentary soft drinks, water etc. There are 2 restaurants on site plus a tea pavilion!- The first is The Living Room which is really the central gathering place and is open for breakfast and all day dining with a lovely central fire place and an outdoor sitting area with another fire place and individual tables with heaters and blankets as needed. The whole atmosphere is inviting and cozy! the food is equally wonderful and there are both Japanese and western choices all prepared equally well! Taka- An is the more formal restaurant wit Japanese kaiseki cuisine where we had one of the most delectables meals of our lives. It was snow crab season which we had requested in advanced thanks to the concierge service! The chef cooked each course in front of us so it was very intimate and personalized. We are most grateful to Yua our server that night (and the second night we ate there) for patiently and painstakingly translating throughout both evenings. We relished the snow crab prepared fresh, as sushi, in a dumpling, grilled,in rice, and chawanmushi. WOW!!! The Aman spa is unlike any other place we have stayed in and I highly, highly recommend it. From massage to facial, it is calm and restorative. The most exquisite experience was our private use of the onsen. What an incredibly beautiful, setting that was one of the highlights of our trip. Lastly,Service is inimitably Aman and exceptional and most of all personalized! From arrival to departure, everyone addresses you by your name! We are especially in awe of and grateful to the Butler/concierge service who were helping us seamlessly arrange tours, guides, restaurant reservations, private manicure, and so much more and appear to be available 24/7!! THANK YOU seems inadequate for their patience and support!! I wish I could thank everyone by name but the culture here is really seamless service and team work!! We truly cannot wait to go back!
