Great Place to Stay in La Jolla

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 days ago

This is a lovely hotel right in the middle of the La Jolla business district. We were able to walk to the shops and restaurants, as well as to the water. The hotel is beautifully decorated -- the room was large and comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend.

Awkward and ill-maintained

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 days ago

I booked an ocean view room here for my wife's birthday trip based on the location and the web site which described the hotel as 4-star. I was very disappointing. The layout is hard to navigate with suitcases, making check-in and check-out difficult. Our first room smelled disgusting and dogs were barking incessantly outside. We were moved - after being told no other rooms were available - to another building half a block away, with a steep hill to deal with whenever we wanted to get to the main hotel. This other building had a lot of stairs and the promised ocean view was only visible by climbing into the nook of a projecting window. The ironing board was missing a vital piece and fell apart when I tried to use it. The first day, the room was not serviced and I had to ask. After that, I will admit it was serviced every day. The shot of the restaurant on the web site makes it look much bigger and fancier than it actually is. The one bright spot was the parking valets, who were unfailingly pleasant and quick. But I wouldn't recommend the hotel itself: it's one of those that pushes the "historic" angle in an attempt to excuse poor maintenance and weird layouts.

Great location, Poor upkeep

The good - The location was wonderful and the only reason we may return someday! The staff were friendly. Not as friendly as some other resorts but friendly enough. The nighttime gentleman who came and remade our sofa bed after it was found filthy was wonderful! The bad - the housekeeping and maintenance were awful. We went to open the sofa bed and it had clearly been used and not cleaned. Very gross. The bathroom had a dirty towel with crusty makeup on it folded in with the other towels, hairs that weren't ours in the shower, on the counter and on the walls, and glasses that were used and barely even wiped. I washed the glasses myself before using them. The body shower sprays haven't been cleaned in ages. The quality of the towels are that of a very cheap motel, even the “clean” towels were covered in makeup stains and were super thin, worn and rough. The minifridge made an awful noise and had an error code. I was able to turn the temperature down with a button that barely worked to get the error code off. We couldn't ever get the fireplace to work. The oven drip pans were so gross, very filthy. A set of drip pans is less than $10 so for $500+ a night really should be changed out more often. Switches were old ond sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. The pool was lackluster and didn't have towels out when we needed them. Overall, the location was great but for the room price, the housekeeping and maintenance really should be much better.

WOnderful experience.

This is a gorgeous historic hotel. We used this for our wedding block and received great feedback from our guests. There were a lot of little touches to make the experience better. The view was fantastic, and the staff were very accommodating. Special shoutout to Yolanda and Josephina for being so kind through the booking process! Also, it is close to everything. Would stay here again!
