Experience a masterpiece of modern architecture on the cliff of the Buergenberg within a fully integrated resort, located 1.800 ft high above Lake Lucerne and yet only 30 min away from the city center of Lucerne. This 140 acre resort including the hotel has been a legend since 1873, due to it fine pioneering heritage (Switzerland's first electric railway, Europe's highest outdoor Elevator) and first and foremost, the link to glamour and celebrity: It was here that, Audrey Hepburn was married, Charlie Chaplin regularly stayed, Sophia Loren and Carlo Ponti made their home and many more celebrities, politicians, etc. returned year on year.

As part of a hastily booked European road trip we were heading to lake Lucerne and my wife booked the Burgenstock Hotel for 2 nights, as a special one off treat to enjoy the spa etc. To clarify we are not a private Lear jet/ Bentley type of family, turning up in my 10 year old VW Transporter Kombi van! If you stay at the Wald Hotel (resort is made up of a number of different hotel accommodation for most budgets) the price for 2 nights although quite a bit more than your average 5 star hotel was a lot cheaper than shall we say the other parts of the resort. Still she was paying so I was happy. The first thing to realise if driving, the steep switch back road that seems to be the only way to get there unless you land by helicopter as someone did in the back garden. It is actually not too bad but nervous passengers don't help. Let's say shades of The Italian Job come to mind. The next thing you notice is how large this place is. Apparently built in the late 1890's when they realised Tourism would be a thing. Excellent guess! They have their own, milk, honey, veg, fruit, beer etc. From the moment we arrived we were treated like Royalty and not with a fake smile and pretend courtesy. ****These people were the nicest hotel staff we have ever met. **** Nothing and I mean nothing was any trouble. They were genuinely really lovely people and made the hotel stay absolutely perfect for us. The room was immaculate everything looked brand new. The contents of the mini fridge were complimentary, the bed supremely comfortable. We had a balcony you could see and hear their local heard of cows with their bells, which was a nice sound, although must drive them potty. We stayed half board, not cheap but set menu options were excellent. Large portion sizes and they were flexible if you wanted something else. Nothing stingy here. Plenty of different restaurants to choose from. Sit outside enjoy the amazing scenery. Surprisingly it was fairly quiet peak August season which was great. They are open all year around and I noticed the price remains fairly constant. They have a funicular railway (free to guests), Catamaran boat to take you to the city. The Hammetschwand lift which I bottled out of, it was high enough walking up there. Hiking trails, infiniti pool the list goes on. You can easily spend a year's salary in no time but for a one off special treat being sensible it will be a retreat like no other. Switzerland is very expensive but in this case you definitely get what you pay for. I am sure they keep the grounds trimmed with scissors daily. There are many complimentary items but check out their website for details. Absolutely the best hotel we have ever stayed in, ever bar none. If you want a nice relaxing few days away from the noise of modern life, that hotel and the location are one of the most perfect you will find. I am wondering which organ to sell for a return visit as soon as possible.
