Older hotel with great location

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 day ago

We stayed a week at the The Dilly. The good- the staff here are all so helpful, professional and very nice! Our room was giant for a hotel in central London. The location is right near a lot of great shopping, near all the theaters and easy walk to landmarks like Tralfalgar square. The not good , our room was tired, chipped paint, some small stains on the carpet and you couldn’t open the windows. So it was quite stuffy at times even though it was cold outside. The hotel had just finished renovating part of the lobby and it looked great. Evidently they are beginning to renovate rooms now too. I will try it here again post renovations. If you don’t mind rooms that are a bit worn it’s a good choice in many ways!

Great location

On arrival we found the receptionist quite rude and abrupt. Not what I was expecting from a five star hotel. The building work was still going on in reception so it was a bit chaotic I didn’t mind that though. We went for lunch in the Terrace room that was lovely with great service and good food. Location is great for the Theatre, The Ritz and shopping all just a short walk. We were celebrating my friend’s 60th birthday they made the occasion really special by putting a cake and fizz in the room with some rose petals , I thought that was wonderful. The doorman was super friendly giving us information about the area and a history lesson too, he was great. Breakfast the following morning was fine, food all tasted good. At other 5 star hotels I have always had coffee and tea served to the table which is appreciated, here it is self service with no tea pots or milk jugs, not ideal. I would stay at the hotel again for location but I would rate it as 4 star not 5 star hotel, but with a few tweaks the hotel could be great. We left our bags with the porter for the day after check out and collected later. There were 2 staff on reception as we passed with no one else stood there and they don’t even look up when we went passed.

Fantastic stay, excellent staff

Thank you for such a pleasant stay at the Dilly. Refurb is underway, so the reception area is restricted. I stayed in a twin room with my mother for the weekend. Pros; Staff members go out of their way to be so kind and hospitality is some of the best I have ever seen. Thank you for such a warm welcome Don! Beds are super comfy. Location is prime. Swimming pool and gym area are great. Extra touches for a birthday was also fantastic. Cons; As others have said the rooms are dated but it has everything you need.

Poor experience

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

I very rarely write reviews but this hotel experience was poor. The executive room was one of the worst I’ve stayed in for a long time and when you’re spending £500 per night it should be much, much better. The pictures show the poor nature of the room. Badly finished, very outdated, awful colour walls (painted with a shiny paint - felt very dungeon like). The extractor fan didn’t work, some lights were defective, they hadn’t even bothered to paint by the side of the wardrobe. The hot breakfast was bland and we didn’t even go for it the second morning. On the plus side, the location is good and the staff were pretty friendly. There were also works being done to the foyer which wasn’t a particularly nice experience but I understand that such works have to be done and so I have not taken this into account in my rating.
