Overcharged, disappointing service, £400 meal

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 8 hours ago

This is a stunning and historic venue, absolutely beautiful. However my experience as a vegetarian was of being very let down both in terms of food standards and service! The bill came to £400 for four people, (2 vegetarians + 2 non vegetarians). As vegetarians we pre-planned to have a cheese soufflé starter and artichoke/ chickpea main dish (advertised online )... we were told on arrival that sadly the only "main" was a cauliflower steak. Another reviewer had forewarned us the cauliflower is not a good choice. Then we were told that the chef could make a mushroom risotto at £48 a head, as if this was a great big favour. But we didn't want cauliflower steak, and we don't like mushrooms. Finally the next great big favour was being offered a modified set menu, supposedly £29 per person (not what it ended up cosying). This set menu consisted of a tomato pastry as starter (quite nice, but not outstanding), the cheese soufflé, usually a starter but served as a main (quite tasty but not worth £10, let alone £100). Then there was a dessert (a stiff eggy cuboid of white foam, with a couple of raspberries alongside). All the plates smelt of egg. Unfortunately we didn't like and couldn't eat, and how ridiculous to charge so much money for so little. The bill came to £400. To be fair, this included a bottle of wine and a bottle of water. But the bill listed mystery fries that were not received. The non-vegetarians had their credit card refunded for this error, (vegetarians were not). Honest reviewers have mentioned how the wonderful decor is. And it is. Decor is definitely the main appeal. Some say service is great and criticise the food. My experience was neither food or service justify the cost. In truth, much as I love Cafe Royal for the wonderful setting, everything else was below average. Far from making vegetarian clients feel welcome, the waiter avoided eye contact, and was intent on addressing only the non-vegetarians in our party, when talking about vegetarian options, which is rude. The pianists were good. But if you are a vegetarian, and food and service are important to you, be warned, for vegetarians, can be a depressing experience. Writing this straight afterwards I feel sick, and need to throw up.

Good service

Had a really nice visit to this cafe. The coffee was fresh and full of flavour, and the food was served quickly and tasted great. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the atmosphere feel warm and welcoming. Overall, a lovely place to relax, enjoy a good meal, and I’d happily visit again.

Great experience from start to finish. Clean, polished rooms, excellent staff at every corner, they even had a kids’ robe and slippers and took care to leave a kids’ game and kids’ toiletries as surprises each night. Would recommend! They even quickly supplied us with the plug adapters when ours decided not to work and prevented a hair emergency

The best stay ever!

Hotel Café Royal exceeded every expectation. From the moment we arrived, Aman at the front desk set the tone — warm, attentive, and genuinely on top of every detail. The concierge team was equally impressive, seamlessly adjusting our reservations without a hint of hassle. It's rare to find a team this coordinated where every touchpoint feels effortless. Lunch at Cakes & Bubbles was an absolute highlight — phenomenal from start to finish, and worth a visit even if you're not staying at the hotel. The amenities throughout the property are outstanding as well, and everything feels thoughtfully maintained. The location on Regent Street can't be beat, but what truly sets this hotel apart is the service. This team anticipates what you need before you ask. We'll absolutely be back.

Lovely holiday in London

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We had a lovely stay. The lobby when you first walked in is beautiful and inviting and had some tennis Incorporated given we were staying during Wimbledon. Our room was overlooking the Piccadilly Circus and you could not hear any outside noise. The bed was extremely comfortable in the shower had great water pressure. We had our four month old daughter with us and had everything that we needed during our stay without having to ask for it. Upon arrival we already had a crib, baby bath, wipes, and baby bathing essentials. The staff was extremely attentive between the welcoming into the hotel, helping us leave the hotel, and cleaning our room. It was a welcomed retreat, coming back to our room with cool AC during this heat wave. The spa was very relaxing, especially with the heat wave. We really enjoyed using the pool. We had lunch one afternoon and the fillet was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth. One morning we went on a sunrise tour and the staff was friendly enough to box up our breakfast for us to take. We will look forward to staying again here hopefully the next time we’re in London!
