Beware if you have a dietary intolerance or allergy

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 5 days ago

Some aspects of our stay were very good other aspects seriously poor. I've given an average rating to reflect the seriousness of the lack of understanding with regard to dietary intolerances. We had a very warm welcome on arrival and our twin room was spacious and comfortable with good mattresses though hard and a very good bathroom. Robes and slippers were provided. However one of the twin beds had a headboard and the other shared part of that headboard but the rest of the bed was against the wall so it was uncomfortable when sitting up in bed (see photo)! We had made it clear in an email when booking and at check in that we had a gluten intolerance and asked for gluten free biscuits and oat milk to be put in the room. Neither were provided BUT biscuits containing gluten were in our room. We asked for the oat milk so a member of staff came to our room to deliver it at which time I asked if the biscuits in the room were gluten free. She didn't know, said she would enquire and bring gluten-free ones if they were not. We went out at that point and returned to find a new plate of biscuits in our room which we of course thought were the new gluten-free ones. We both had a bite and I said to my sister "don't eat any more (I spat mine out) I suspect they contain gluten". I phoned reception and she asked me to describe the biscuits. I did and she said that they were normal gluten containing biscuits!!!! I was very annoyed but polite and she was very unaware and unhelpful so I asked for a manager. Declan the manager on duty was lovely and apologetic and said that he would be furious if such a thing had happened to him. He looked after us at dinner which was an excellent meal and he didn't charge us for drinks or dessert as a gesture which we appreciated. We felt that all would go well after that. At breakfast we told the staff that we were gluten free and all went well. No biscuits appeared in our room on the second day - we didn't mind. At breakfast the second day we again reminded them that we were gluten free BUT unbelievably my sister was served her boiled egg with gluten containg soldiers - how is that even possible!!! They had already given us gluten free toast! As the soldiers looked like different bread to the gluten-free toast and because I didn't trust them I asked if the soldiers were gluten-free and we were taken aback when the waitress said "oh no they're not sorry about that" and didn't take my sister's plate but instead grabbed the soldiers in a handful and took them off her plate!! Unbelievable! We were in a hurry to leave and catch our train so didn't talk to a manager. Check out was good. Most of the staff were lovely, especially the young man on reception and the man who showed us to our room and around the hotel on arrival and of course Declan who was brilliant. However a thoroughly unpleasant woman on reception was handling a complaint from a tall guest who was complaining about the ceiling height in his room. As well as seemingly being unable to apologise to him and making him annoyed in her approach, when he had gone she proceeded to say unpleasant things about him whilst we sat just feet away. It was extremely unprofessional and rude. The staff really need to be trained about the vital importance of dietary intolerances and allergies as they clearly don't understand the seriousness of such matters.

Faultless stay

What a wonderful hotel! Stayed here as a family for a celebration, the staff couldn’t do enough for us. From the moment we stepped inside service was amazing. We had afternoon tea and it was wonderful, plenty of choice and all our requests catered for. Our rooms were spotless, with character and very comfy beds. Great location just a 15 minute walk and we were in Covent Garden. An absolute gem of a hotel with amazing staff and service.

It’s Our Home Away from Home!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This was our third trip to Montague. We adore this hotel. This trip we tried a different red carnation hotel at the start of our trip before going on to Scotland and then had Montague booked on the back end. The other hotel was lovely but we felt like we were home when we arrived at Montague. The staff is always so warm, friendly and welcoming from the front desk to the cleaning staff. We were absolutely surprised and delighted to find that the hostess at breakfast actually remembered our family from the year before. 🩷 The rooms are so comfortable and have so much character. Everything is always impeccably clean. The neighborhood is beautiful and relatively quiet, while being convenient to everything we want to see. We decided when we got home from this trip that we don’t need to continue trying other London hotels. Montague has our hearts and it will always be our home away from home when we stop in London! Thank you to all of the staff for another wonderful stay! 🩷The Graff Family

Excellent hotel and fantastic staff.

Stayed her with my daughter for two nights for a birthday theatre show. Everything about this hotel is fab including all the staff we came into contact with. Nothing was to much trouble for them, a great bonus is that they stored our bags on arrival before check in and till late afternoon on our departure day so we could go sightseeing until our train was due. The Leopard bar is diva supreme worthy and the food we had was lovely. Our room was great, very clean and had everything we needed, plenty of mirrors including magnifying ones for applying your make-up. The bed was super comfy and considering we were in central London our room was so quiet at night, we had a great two nights sleep. Would most definitley stay here again...highly recommended.

Excellent summer party spot

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 4 weeks ago

We held our summer party at The Montague On The Gardens beach bar. The whole team had a great time. The staff were so attentive and friendly, the food was delicious and the drinks were plentiful. If you're looking for a fun but relaxed spot to have a party in Central London, then I highly recommend going here.
