About the Hotel

A 19th-century beauty meets the London of today: that’s what you’ll find at Kimpton Fitzroy London Hotel. From the outside, the landmark building, which occupies a full block along the eastern side of Russell Square in Bloomsbury, looks every bit the part of grande dame. Inside, though, contemporary interiors beckon the discerning traveler to settle in and stay a while—Negroni (or two) in hand. Live like a Londoner on Russell Square. With one foot in the city’s past and another in its present, our Bloomsbury location combines British creative heritage with modern amenities.Presiding gracefully over Russell Square, with a stylish restaurant, Champagne and afternoon tea lounge, a cafe, destination cocktail bar and gym, our 334-room hotel turns every event into a memorable occasion. With a nod to 20s glamour and British irreverence, such as the Kit Miles cushions depicting our resident dragon, Lucky George, each luxuriously styled bedroom by Tara Bernerd & Partners beautifully reflects the rich history of our iconic hotel. Uniquely Kimpton in-room extras include a mug featuring George the dragon and yoga mat to help you feel at home.

Plan ahead, book rooms accordingly

This is a truly lovely hotel with helpful staff, but it didn't work well for us for both idiosyncratic and logistical reasons. First the logistical problems: if you are the kind of traveler who takes the Tube, when possible- this hotel is very near the Russell Sq Tube stop, a station that would be impossible for anyone with mobility challenges and a pain for anyone lugging suitcases. Stairs are unavoidable. There is an elevator to the main concourse (that or 175 spiral stairs- take the elevator), but you must also go up/down short flights of stairs to get to the platform. This is obviously not the hotel's fault. But, you should take mobility concerns into consideration. Now the idiosyncratic problems that could be avoided by booking a different room. Our room was on the first floor (we would call it the second floor in the US). If I stayed here again I would avoid the first floor because music from the ballroom on the first floor was clearly audible in the room and continued until midnight. Other issues may also be specific to this floor as well. Similar to the tube station, despite an elevator, there was a short flight of stairs to get to our room. This is not true for all rooms, but again anyone with mobility concerns should make sure that their room is fully accessible. Our room was lovely and except for the party noise on Sat night was super quiet. I know this because in one of the rooms near us a beginning player was practicing scales on the violin (🤦‍♀️🤣) which was clearly audible in the hall, but not in the room. However, the room was too small for two ppl (our fault, accidentally booked for a single person). Those are the negatives which could be avoided with better booking choices. Now the positives. This is a truly beautiful hotel. The entryway is spectacular and it is immaculately clean. The area around the hotel-Bloomsbury is historically interesting and offers restaurants and pubs that are nearby. I we did not take advantage of some nice amenities- stupid us-happy hour with complimentary wine, coffee and pastries for breakfast and apparently toothpaste an led face mask if you left yours at home In short, nice place, not for us. But, you could have a good experience with planning

“Meh”

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 days ago

As a frequent London visitor (4-5 times year), I’ve always wanted to stay at this beauty of a property. And while the property is indeed beautiful; the details that I would expect from this caliber of a property were just not there. Perhaps my fault for having too high of expectation; perhaps the sign of declining standards; perhaps a combo of both, I truly have to say “meh” to the value vs reality of the stay so far. I arrived early and while the proper check in time was understood, it was said a text or message would arrive when the room was available. No message came. I returned after 4pm asking about readiness and was handed keys without pause. After check in, I went to the bar and ordered cocktails. Both were subpar and additions were done to try to fix them as opposed to just making something different with an explanation of how recipes may differ. Bottled water was asked and paid for and regular tap water was used to refill glasses with bottled water still left. Instead of replacing, a shrug of the shoulder was given. This was/is day 1. On the surface, these small infractions seem meaningless. And in the grand scheme of hospitality and life, they really are “petty” indeed; but for a property that is supposedly top notch, that is supposed to be a step above the ordinary; this stay has been anything but that and just sadly disappointing.

One of our favourite hotels in London - beautiful decor, great cocktail bar, lots of lovely little touches like the tuck box in your room and the staff are always great - we would go again and again.

My go-to for so many reason!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 2 weeks ago

From check in to amenities to dining and the bar - I will never stay anywhere else in London. I am always so appreciative of the care shown to all guests and selfishly, to me! Thank you to the front desk who must have decided I was looking ragged and gave me a resting room whilst mine was being prepared to take a much needed nap. The bar is one of my favorite cocktail scenes, given the great vibes, great bartenders and interesting color spectrum of drinks. To all on staff, thank you for always providing such a wonderful stay. Until next time!
