With city lights and vintage brick as a backdrop, Proper re-imagines and updates an historic Broadway Corridor landmark into a 148-room destination hotel. Here, the creative vision of Kelly Wearstler seamlessly blends past and present with compelling design, vintage influence and local art. Essentials include two destination restaurants in partnership with James Beard Award-winning L.A. chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Hollywood Bowl Food + Wine, Larder Baking company); an intimate library-lounge, a city-view rooftop pool and lounge-bar-restaurant. Especially Proper are two singular, one-of-a-kind suites fashioned from the basketball court and indoor pool of the building’s sporting club past.

Reserved a room for a week, but had to check out early due to government shutdown. Management was understanding and didn't charge an early check-out fee, which I really appreciate. All staff encountered were very professional. Rooms are pleasant, and the hotel overall is clean. Gym is small-ish, but nice. Did not get to the pool, as I think you have to walk through the rooftop restaurant and bar to get to it, maybe? Location is fine, although two blocks to the east is where Skid Row starts. But, I walked through part of Skid Row and didn't have any problems. People are just people. I drove through Skid Row multiple times and didn't encounter any problems. In the other three directions, you can easily walk to great restaurants and decent shopping. I hope to stay here again upon return to LA.

Proper is a great place to stay in Downtown Los Angeles. The decor and interior design gives off a boho and artsy vibe, which is both a treat for the eyes and senses. It’s a fun and playful imagination of what hotels can be, instead of stale and corporate designs that seem repetitive, bland and empty. Prosper has personality! There is incredible attention to detail that makes the Proper a curated experience from the moment you step in. The property felt so safe and well maintained. Security at the doors welcome and help you onto the property. The front desk concierge were welcoming and walk you through everything to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible such as the restaurants, complementary coffee/tea, rooftop pool, fitness center, and a thorough walk-through of the program perks. The rooms were clean, the beds and sheets were luxurious, the lighting was great and dimmable to set the vibes you’re looking for. The best part were the Aesop toiletries and products, yes, you read that right. Aesop. I have never been more relaxed after a night on the city. The robes are from Parachute, although light, were just fine and enjoyable. Restaurants were great. Cara Cara is the rooftop bar and restaurant with stunning views and the fresh and quality food. Caldo Verde is their ground floor restaurant, which is well decorated and feels bright, classy, and uplifting. Definitely consider Proper for your stay in Los Angeles.

Nicely renovated old hotel with comfortable bed, great shower and excellent staff. Lovely rooftop restaurant with great views of the city. Although downtown area is rundown, there are great restaurants nearby.

I usually avoid Marriott Design properties since they’re not obligated to recognize elite perks like late checkout or complimentary breakfast. The Amex Fine Hotels of the World program solves that problem. Early check in, 4 PM checkout, $30 complimentary breakfast per person (max of 2) and a $100 property credit were granted. With that in mind anyone can feel elite at the Proper. The “pool” is really more of an opportunity for a plunge. It’s so small and shallow that there’s not much swimming to be had. We didn’t have any problems securing lounge chairs on a Sunday and Monday. The food and beverages at Cara Cara were superb. Be aware of a 6% addendum for employee health insurance. The veggie omelette at Caldo Verde was the best I’ve ever eaten. Thankfully housekeepers did not start knocking on our door before 4 PM as is the case at other Marriott family properties. There’s not much to recommend the South Park neighborhood in DTLA beyond this hotel.
