Pretty Nice Hotel, but Overpriced

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 22 hours ago

We stayed at SUMAQ Machu Picchu Hotel for one night during a month-long journey through South America (@wolfestreettravel on Instagram and wolfestreettravel.com). Definitely one of the nicer hotels in Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu Pueblo, but significantly overpriced, in our view. Nice hotel fit and finish, but felt way more like an institutional, 3* to 4* European hotel instead of a 5* hotel. Not a lot of character and the SUMAQ Machu Picchu caters primarily to tour groups, hence dinner being included in the price. We needed to have dinner before or after a big group's dinner, because they took up most of the dining room. Not a problem, really, but just a data point on the outsize role that tour groups play in the hotel's business. Breakfast was among the least impressive we encountered on our trip, and was consistent with the 3* to 4* feel of the hotel - definitely not what we expected for the price of the hotel. Limited selection, none of the baked goods seemed particularly fresh, and no one asked for an espresso / latte order, which is the standard for a hotel at this price - you were just stuck with brewed coffee in carafes on the buffet table. Service was spectacular, though, and we were checked in early, which we very much appreciated.

Amazing

The service and food were amazing. The people very friendly. Hotel is clean and well located. They make you feel like home. Highly recommend it. It is walking distance from the center of the city where you can get the buses to Machupichu. The view is amazing.

Perfect! In every way.

Everything was outstanding! Eddy was there when our train arrived to collect our baggage. After visiting Machu Picchu we had a fabulous dinner. Our waiter, Larry, was great and really enhanced the experience. My wife did the Imperial spa package. Best spa experience she’s ever had. Our room had a beautiful view of river, we kept the doors open at night and went to sleep to the sound of rushing water. Again, every thing was outstanding, we loved it.

Luxurious, with a super-peaceful soundtrack!

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 1 week ago

Sumaq is across the street from the Rio Urubamba, which at this point is a rushing rapid. Even with the windows closed, we fell asleep to that wonderful sound. And woke up relaxed. The beds were super-comfortable, and the room got really dark at night. Check-in was relaxed, with a cold (non-alcoholic) drink, just lounging on a sofa until they found our reservation. We had accidently booked the wrong night but they transferred our reservation to the actual night that we had arrived. "Don't worry, we have a room for you," was comforting to hear. We had both dinner and breakfast at their restaurant. Dinner was delicious and artfully presented. I had sort of Peruvian chicken fingers - the chicken was coated in quinoa, served with a potato puree and vegetables. Quite creative! The breakfast buffet was large and filling. We also had a couples massage - 30 minutes of jacuzzi followed by 60 minutes of massage, about US$250 for two people total. Finally, we were taking the train back to Ollantaytambo. The hotel transferred our bags to the train station for us, part of their service. This hotel is definitely a repeater.
