An absolutely fantastic experience staying at this hotel, from the greeting at the train station through to our final lunch before leaving on the train back to Cusco. We booked a tour of Machu Picchu through the Sumaq Hotel, and it was the highlight of our vacation for our entire family, from teenagers to grandparents. We were met at the train station by Jonathan, who had everything organized, from all the required tickets, personal guidance to the boarding of the bus to the top, as well as looking after bags that we could leave with the hotel to pick up later. At the top, our guide Anna was amazing, and really went above and beyond. She knows her history, and is a great storyteller. Truly, both Jonathan and Anna were great.”, and we can’t say enough good things about them. At the end of the tour, we had an amazing lunch at the hotel, our best meal of the trip. All our meals at the hotel were fantastic, in fact, including dinner, breakfast and another lunch the next day. We didn’t want to eat anywhere else. The room was quite comfortable and our family of four were able to relax in a triple room, with space for everyone.

The hotel is so close to Machu Picchu you can see the mountains from your room. The staff was extremely helpful, especially Johnny. We had a small Arac Masin ceremony to celebrate our anniversary. Worth it! The shaman and decorations were on point, traditional clothing and flowers included. The food throughout our stay was delicious! The only reason this is a 4 not a 5 is that we had an accounting issue where the hotel double charged us an excessive amount for prepaid scheduled activities. We had to spend much of our time with the concierge unraveling what amounted to a paper work error. They finally made it right, but it did put a damper on things.

We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary here as our base for a trip to Machu Picchu. We loved Aguas Calientes so much, and I’m so glad we chose to have our anniversary celebration at Sumaq. They made our anniversary very special with a shaman ceremony and a fabulous dinner with wine pairings after a day at Machu Picchu. Milagros (“Luz”) was the star of the show, she provided 5* service. Highly recommend!

SUMAQ: Great staff, particularly George who was both a Peruvian wine enthusiast as well as part of the excellent service staff. Ideally located for Machu Picchu access. Our room was lovely with a great view. Little night noise and a little problem getting the TV to work but not really time for TV anyway. You should definitely stay here if you can.

Daniel, George, and Francesco all took great care of us. We had a very nice stay, all things considered. We are very happy that we chose to stay at Sumaq. Strongly recommend a river view room because that side of the hotel faces away from the train tracks. Nevertheless the train was still audible from our river facing room but we got used to the noise quite quickly.
