Savoy Saccharum Resort & Spa is a beautiful property located in Calheta overlooking the sea and near the Marina da Calheta. The hotel is located just 20 minutes from Funchal, the Island city capital, and 45 minutes from the International airport. The Savoy Saccharum is designed with natural landscaping that offers a symbiosis between the ocean and the mountain. Proudly a design resort, the Savoy Saccharum had the signatures of modern and innovative HR architecture studio and recognized and awarded Madeiran interior designer Nini Andrade Silva, who opted for a contemporary décor, using the sugar cane (saccharum) as the conceptual element.

We recently stayed at Hotel Saccharum in Madeira for four nights and had a truly wonderful experience. The hotel is a beautiful architectural creation, with spacious rooms and absolutely stunning views. The infinity pool and its surroundings are simply beyond words peaceful, scenic, and incredibly relaxing. It is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of Madeira. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. Emmanuel warmly welcomed us at check-in and was very helpful. Diane assisted us during check-out and made our departure smooth and pleasant. Flavia also went above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable and memorable. One of the biggest highlights was the food. The dinner buffet was outstanding the food was always fresh and delicious, with a great variety every day. We especially loved trying the unique Madeiran fish dishes and the wide selection of desserts. The themed dinners each evening made dining a very enjoyable experience. We were also pleasantly surprised to receive complimentary parking and daily dining credit, which added great value to our premium stay. The staff’s attention to detail was truly impressive. For my husband’s birthday, they thoughtfully arranged a cake, a bottle of fizz, and a selection of fruits in our room such a lovely and personal touch. Room service was also provided twice a day, which made the stay feel even more luxurious. Some guests may feel the hotel ambience is a little dark, but we personally loved it. The industrial design gives the hotel a unique character, and we found the atmosphere calm, soothing, and very relaxing. Overall, this was a genuine 5-star experience and absolutely worth the money we paid. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend Hotel Saccharum to anyone visiting Madeira. We are already looking forward to returning again.

I have stayed at Saccharum twice now. The first time, I had the best experience and would have rated this as one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at. The housekeeping staff are amazing and almost invisible, they clean your room like ninjas when you are out, and you come back to chocolates on your pillow. The rooms are exceptionally nice. The amenities are wonderful (there are five pools here) and the complimentary breakfast is great too. All good things that give this hotel a really high rating. The service is generally exceptional and the staff are wonderful. However, my experience this time, was worse than before, and we had a couple of major issues with some of the changes that were made since my last stay. 1) I feel like the luxury experience, has been cheapened, since my last stay. I felt like guests are treated like "Cash cows", with the hotel trying to get as much money out of them as possible. Saccharum now has a premium "tier" (which they did have the last time I visited) but they have cheapened the experience for all guests, since I was last here, by doing a couple of quite critical things: a) By not allowing non-premium guests to use the sun chairs by the infinity pool. Last time, I visited, you could use the sun chairs here, even if you just wanted to put your stuff there while you swim (this is important if you are a solo traveller and have no one to watch your stuff). This time, they ask you to upgrade to premium to use these sun chairs at a charge of 35 euros per day. b) I had a lot of things included in the room rate the last time I was here. Half board was offered as standard in the room rate, which included the buffet dinner. This time, we paid for the buffet meal one night and it was in no way worth the price we were charged (40 euros per person per night). It might have been acceptable to be charged 20 euros per person, but that's the absolute max. Most of the buffet food had already gone, and needed to be replenished, and we ended up throwing some random food combination together, because we were hungry. We were also charged a service charge, which I asked to be removed, because no one served us. It was in no way a five star experience. In contrast to the breakfast, which was consistently great. Every day, the buffet was full of options and the staff were available to serve us coffees. We ended up eating in the on-site open-air restaurant, by the sun loungers, the other nights, which was a great option. We had good service from both waiters and the food was nice. But if we were here longer, we would have eaten off-site, as the food was very expensive at the hotel and food overall, in Portugal, and Madeira, is much lower cost and much higher quality. Positive things: the housekeeping was as exceptional as always. The rooms were cleaned and the staff were almost invisible. The front-desk staff were incredibly helpful and helped us with booking transportation. The comments I made above aren't really related to the staff, as they are doing a great job. With five star hotels, the expectation is that you pay a higher cost for the room and everything is included and taken care of for you - that's why you paid more for the room, than in a three or four star hotel. This felt like Easyjet or RyanAir adding on a load of undisclosed costs before you can check out (hence the "cheapening" of the experience). Although I love this hotel, I would consider staying some place else if I came back to Madeira because I was really disappointed, in comparison to my first stay, which was absolutely perfect. I hope they rethink the "premium" experience strategy because every guest could have a five star experience at his hotel, if they continued the service and the strategy they had before.
