Saccharum Resort and Spa

Presently I would say don’t visit Madeira in early May. On our 4th day and still too cold to sit outside or walk without layers on. Windy and lots of rain. The hotel has lots of interesting industrial architecture ( from its former sugar mill legacy) It’s very modern, which I like but the lighting is terrible. It’s so dark. I’m currently frustrated because the weather is poor, the sea view room we have is comfortable to sleep in but not sit in. The balcony is too cold and we’ve already explored what Calheta has to offer- it doesn’t take long. The room furniture- an uncomfortable solid chaise Lange. Tried to find a comfortable indoor space to sit and read. All the indoor bar/ lounges are locked up. The only space is the foyer, which is extensive but very dark and dismal. The service is polite but slow. Breakfast staff are overwhelmed. We made the mistake of buying a full board. The only place to get lunch is an outdoor bar/ restaurant area with shade over it. Take something warm with you. The lunch menu is good but as full board customers we have a very limited choice or the allocation of 15€ each towards what we actually want. When I look at the price for full and part board it’s not good value. The evening buffet is less frantic but the choice is not that extensive. Have stayed in much better 5 star hotels.

This is a great hotel for a short break. Rooms are well organised with great beds, and an unusual open plan sink area that meant everything could be unpacked well! Great beds. Open door shower was the only awkward feature. The overall modern design of the hotel is breathtaking in some areas and hidden pools and areas to sit and enjoy the view - 2nd floor one is a highlight. Beach bar great for drinks and lovely service. We ate in the restaurant a couple of times which was well priced with good service. Breakfast is a real treat with endless choices. It’s a bit far from Funchal but easy to organise Ubers or Bolt. Marina is easy to get to with lots of other choices of restaurants. Thanks so much for a great stay and will be recommending this hotel to lots of friends.

Perfect location in the west, food selection more than acceptable, hotel offers all amenities you need for the best holiday, two small sandy beaches at immediate vicinity, service team of hotel immediately available when needed, would only recommend to rent a car. Sandra&Marc

Sehr schönes Hotel mit tollem Ausblick und super Frühstück. Top Anlage mitsamt schöner Dach Terrasse und mehreren Pools. Etwas abseits von Funchal, Auto also schon notwendig. Kann aber problemlos im Hotel oder in der Nähe geparkt werden!
