We split our five nights in Madrid across two stays here, and it was the right call both times. After a long flight from San Francisco, the last thing you want is a complicated arrival. We got the opposite. Guillermo and Juan Luis at the front desk welcomed us warmly, walked us through the neighborhood, and marked up a map with nearby sights and restaurants. The porters took our bags up while we got oriented. A genuinely smooth landing after a long day. We were also informed that our room had been upgraded, a welcome perk of Marriott Bonvoy membership. The room was large and beautifully appointed, with a full sitting area, sofa, coffee table, and dining table alongside the bedroom. When we returned for our second stay, the front desk recognized us immediately. The new room was on the top floor overlooking the park, and it was exceptional. The hotel itself is worth mentioning separately. Stunning artwork throughout, a gorgeous old spiral staircase, a comfortable bar, and a beautiful dining room for breakfast. It has the feel of a historic property that’s been done right. The location is the final piece. Directly across from Parque del Retiro, one of Madrid’s great urban parks, with paths, fountains, statues, and a beautiful lake. The Prado is also within easy walking distance, as are plenty of excellent restaurants. Madrid can be crowded and hectic, and having that park a few steps away was a genuine pleasure, especially for unwinding after travel days. Among the four hotels we stayed at in Spain, this one stood out for its staff, its beauty, and its setting. Highly recommended.

This is a beutiful, old building housing what once was an upscale hotel. But it's in need of some TLC and staff training. It's a great location, right around the corner from the Prado museum and across the street from the beautiful Retiro Park, Madrid's version of New York's Central Park. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful, though the doorman seemed to be more interested in hanging out at the desk than keeping an eye on guest arrivals. Our taxi dropped us off and no doorman was in sight. As we schlepped our bags through the front door, he suddenly appeared, wanting to help with our bags. Too Late. The hotel offers turn-down service, but in our case, it was very inconsistent. One night we got water and fresh towels, the next night only fresh towels, the next night, nothing, Then, after notifying the desk, full service the last night we were there. And as for maintenance, paint was peeling on the window frames inside the bathroom, as well as several light bulbs were out. I just expect more from a hotel of this caliber.

Staying at Palacio del Retiro was an exquisite treat. From the moment Elba checked us in at the front desk, we felt at home. Juan Carlos was always at the ready to assist us with bags or cabs when we needed them. Marimar and Rosalba gave us wonderful service every morning during breakfast. Jimena helped us find restaurants and places to go. And Yarelys gave us great service in the lounge when we returned in the evening. The experience and the service was second to none. I highly recommend this place.
