Extraordinary staff: The staff at the desk were there to support us and anticipate our needs: Kindness, friendliness, a stand that we would learn Spanish at our pace, a commitment that our stay with them would be a memorable experience. They were a ready source of information ranging from the history of the building to the wonders of El Retiro across the street, great recommendations of places to eat, how to get the most out or our stay, and their favorite locations. One of the wait staff adopted us and helped us enjoy Sangria prepared with richer flavor than we tasted anywhere else in Spain. At breakfast we enjoyed the rich assortment of local foods while experiencing we were eating in a healthy manner. One of the women who worked in that department quickly learned how my wife liked her coffee, her taste for a fresh pitcher of water, and freshly prepared juice. These were ready for her as she showed up. From our room on the fourth floor we could step out on the balcony and, in the cooler evenings enjoy the balmy air as we relished the smells and sights of the El Retiro Park. We experienced a sense of wonder with the park just outside our window; although we are Americans with no royal relations, we had a clear sense of the peaceful retreat from every day rushing that the royal family had created with this park. Our room was spacious and quiet. A pleasure to start our days here and a comforting place to unwind, sleep and prepare for the next day after relishing the wonders of Spain. We had some initial concerns after booking the room, before we arrived that there would be noise from the busy street below. We were pleased to discover that was a needless concern. What more might we have asked for? It is hard to say. The only thing the two of us could identify is we would have very much enjoyed seeing pictures of the building as it was built for the royal relatives before the building was renovated and turned into a hotel.

Great place, clean and comfortable. Location 10/10: parque del retiro across the road and puerta de Alcalá 2 blocks away. It can’t be beaten. Breakfast was superb and stuff very nice. The only suggestion is to put a sofa or a couple of chairs at the lobby.
