Beautiful Property With Uneven Service and Terrible Breakfast

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 18 hours ago

This is a spectacular property, no doubt about it. It is historic, beautiful and classy inside and out and it is very well located for exploring Marseille. The room was quite nice though not overly large, but the balcony was very spacious and enjoyable. Bed was comfortable, bath was great (though housekeeping leaves the water switched to the hose so that when you turn it on it squirts all over your bed!) and towels were thick and fluffy. The level of service and food for breakfast does not match the hard product and was surprisingly inconsistent with the quality of the hotel. Checkin was not overly warm nor informative, had to dig information out of them. No welcome drink, no water or beverages of any kind in the lobby, no welcome gift in the room, even with IHG status. Evening turndown service was basic, no surprise treats or anything like that. One single tiny bottle of complimentary water in the room and the mini bar pricelist said 7 euros each for more. They really did the bare minimum for a five star hotel, and fell short of other ICs I've stayed in all over the world. Breakfast was shockingly below expectations, probably the worst I've ever had in any IC without exaggeration (and look at my post count to see how many hotels I've stayed in.) Again I am judging by the star level and brand and pricetag. You are handed a tiny menu and confusingly, there is a very sparse buffet spread far away from the dining room and you have to walk through some empty rooms that appear to be part of the kitchen or unused dining room or something to get there. Took us a good 10 minutes to even understand what the arrangement was and find where the food was. Absolutely insufficient spread of items for a five star property, and when we came (ONE HOUR before closing) half the trays were empty or almost empty. Hot food was not hot, quality was not good, selection was poor especially for vegetarians, there were birds flying around and almost no staff to be found. Nothing international, really just a low end continental breakfast with a few cooked items. And the worst thing was the pastries were poor. I mean c'mon if you can't even produce a tasty, flaky pain au chocolat or croissant at a five star hotel IN FRANCE, something is seriously wrong. We got breakfast due to IHG status but honestly if I had to pay for it I'd ask for a refund. It was disgraceful for a five star hotel charging top dollar. I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express the week before in another country and can honestly say the buffet and service was better. Overall I'd give the breakfast one to two stars at best, service level of the hotel about three out of five, and the building and room itself five- so barely four overall only on the strength of the lovely 800 plus year old building. Honestly they have a lot of work to do to make the breakfast and service level reach a five star level. Very strange experience.

Excellent location, decor and comfort

Ideal location near the old port.Grand old building renovated with contemporary, stylish decor. The room was well appointed and comfortable. Dinner at the restaurant was better than expected at a chain hotel. Service was excellent; the concierge was particularly helpful.

One of the best if not the best of Marseille

I like the history of the this building. It was initially an abandoned old hospital that has been transformed to a luxurious hotel while keeping the original aspect of the building. The area is calm and close to ‘Le vieux port’ and many nice restaurants.

Superb 5 star hotel in a great location

A beautiful hotel in a fantastic location. From the entrace to the hotel you can see down to the old harbour and across to the Sacre Cœur Basilica Marseille. The old harbour is only a short walk, as are most of the major attractions. Excellent service.

Expensive hotel with uncaring staff.

TripAdvisor Traveler Review Rating Reviewed 3 months ago

It is a lovely hotel in a very good central district. Staff unfortunately were unhelpful and unfriendly. Be prepared to spend €25 for a gin and tonic. Mini bar small Coke €9. Air conditioning not working in our room and our request to have it fixed ignored. I would avoid this property while visiting Marseille
